Garbage collection vehicles in Doon now just a call away

Time of India4 days ago

Dehradun: In a bid to improve waste management across the city, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has issued CUG (closed user group) phone numbers to its garbage vehicle drivers, allowing residents and ward councillors to coordinate with them more effectively.
Dehradun currently generates over 450 metric tonnes of waste every day.
On Tuesday, the DMC distributed CUG phones to 40 drivers across 25 wards. The phone numbers will also be displayed on the vehicles, making it easier for residents to contact the staff. According to officials, this initiative aims to reduce delays, improve accountability and ensure waste is collected reliably. In the past, irregular garbage collection often forced residents to dispose of waste in public spaces.
By making contact details available, the DMC hopes to reduce littering, address grievances promptly, and further strengthen its waste management system.
This is the first phase of the initiative, with more numbers to be allocated soon, officials said.
The initiative comes after DMC took over door-to-door waste collection in Feb this year, following the failure of multiple private agencies to streamline the process.

Since then, the corporation claimed that waste collection has risen from 46% to 80% across the city, and the number of garbage collection vehicles has increased to 234, with an additional 50 to be introduced soon, said commissioner Namami Bansal.

Bansal said that starting July 1, the DMC will roll out a comprehensive overhaul of its waste management system. "The goal is to build an integrated system entirely managed by the civic body — reducing dependency on third-party vendors, cutting costs and making waste collection more efficient," she added.

NMC zones sit on list of unsafe buildings for a month, monsoon preparedness jeopardized

Nagpur: Despite identifying 190 dilapidated and dangerous structures across Nagpur city in a pre-monsoon survey this year, all the 10 zones of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) delayed their reports, severely hampering the city's disaster preparedness this rainy season. The lists, meant to reach the Fire and Emergency Services Department before the onset of monsoon, were submitted almost a month late, pushing back urgent actions like demolition, evacuation and public warnings. The documents reviewed by TOI revealed that only 51 buildings have been demolished in the last few years while the rest are extremely risky structures still standing in residential and commercial areas. Notices were issued in all cases, but ground action remained sluggish due to delayed coordination and procedural bottlenecks. "The delay in submitting the zone-wise lists stalled pre-monsoon safety drills. Timely demolitions or evacuations could save lives in the event of structural collapse," a senior fire officer said, adding that the risk remains high as rains have intensified in the city. The Gandhibagh Zone reported the highest number of dangerous structures — 73 — but managed to demolish zero, while 23 such structures were renovated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo Dhantoli Zone listed 25 structures but demolished only nine. Ashi Nagar, Laxmi Nagar and Nehru Nagar zones also performed poorly in removing dangerous buildings despite issuing notices. In zones like Satranjipura and Lakadganj, civic inaction has left dangerous homes and commercial properties vulnerable to collapse. Many of these structures are decades old, weakened further by years of neglect and structural wear. Adding to the concern, multiple buildings identified as risky in previous years still remain on this year's list, indicating repeated lapses in enforcement. Some zones cited ongoing court cases or refusal by residents to vacate as hurdles. NMC's fire department is insisting that zonal offices reissue demolition notices to high-risk buildings and intensify on-ground monitoring and enforcement. Experts slammed the civic administration for the lack of urgency. "This is criminal negligence. If a building collapses during the monsoon and lives are lost, the blame lies squarely on the delayed response," said a former disaster management consultant. No relief from stray cattle menace on highways this monsoon

Bhopal: Commuters on highways in the state will have to stay alert this monsoon, as the govt has decided to drop its drive launched last year to remove stray cattle from roads due to a financial crunch. The move drew sharp criticism from the commuters, who say the menace poses a major risk to motorists especuially during the rainy season when visibility remains poor. The govt, however, said steps were being put in place to resolve the issue permanently. The drive involved cattle-lifting vehicles linked to toll booths, used to transport stray cattle to nearby shelters with the help of toll booth operators and other organisations. The initiative led to the removal of 5,068 cows from highways. According to department data, 192 cows died in road accidents during the last monsoon between July and Sept, while 689 cows were rescued and treated. Hemant Mishra, a resident of Ganjbasoda in Vidisha district and a regular commuter between Vidisha and Bhopal, said the stray cattle pose a threat on the road while driving, and the problem increases during the monsoon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Asked, a senior official from the department said the drive has been shelved due to a financial crunch. Animal husbandry and dairy minister Lakhan Patel told TOI, "Monsoon has just started. There will be no such problem (cattle menace on the road) from next year. We are coming up with 30 cow sheds in the state with a capacity to keep thousands of stray cows. Cows will not be found on roads once the cow sheds are developed." Last year's exercise followed govt directives issued on June 21, asking officials to address the issue of stray cattle on roads especially during the rainy season to prevent accidents and boost traffic movement.

Pachpaoli fire station starts operations with limited staff

1 2 3 Nagpur: With only one driver and three contractual firemen currently deployed, and a 5,000-litre capacity fire tender stationed at the site, the recently-inaugurated Pachpaoli fire station started operating amid manpower constraints. Despite the challenges, the facility is expected to significantly strengthen fire response in North Nagpur, where emergencies have risen due to the rising population, high-rises, malls, industries, hospitals, and slum clusters. As part of a city-wide master plan for 22 fire stations, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation got the fully-equipped Pachpaoli station inaugurated by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of revenue-cum-district guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Sunday. Residents of areas like Buddh Nagar, Barse Nagar, Lashkaribagh, Vaishali Nagar, Balabhau Peth, Nava Nakasha, Thakkargram, Kanji House, Yadavnagar, Teka Naka, Timki, Mehdi Bagh Colony, Kidwai Ground, Bangladesh Naik Talav, Kadbi Chowk, Mecosabagh, Mominpura, and Dhobinagar will benefit directly from faster response times. IC Markets Start Now Undo The previous station building at Pachpaoli became unsafe in 2011, prompting a temporary shift to Sugat Nagar. However, the increasing demand for prompt fire services in north Nagpur led to the decision to rebuild at Pachpaoli. The foundation stone was laid on August 5, 2023, and the facility was ready within 18 months. The G+5 storey structure spans 3,078.09 sqm on a 1,708.94 sqm plot, featuring two wings with 35 residential quarters — 2 for officers and 33 for staff — with 2BHK layouts. The complex also includes underground parking and three water tanks with a capacity of 25,000-litre apiece. The building has dedicated offices for deputy fire officers, men's and women's sections, a control room, and storage areas, with lifts in both wings. The station can house two fire tenders and two mini water tenders simultaneously. The manpower for Pachpaoli fire station was spared from Sugat Nagar station. The Sugat Nagar fire station is currently functioning with 11 permanent staff and a few contractual workers, spread over three shifts. Typically, two drivers are deployed for every shift with absenteeism or leave reducing the operational strength on any given day. Fire officer Sunil Dokre confirmed that despite the staffing constraints, both stations remain functional and emergency response operations have already begun in Pachpaoli.
