Police hunt for 'reckless' hoons after chaotic car meet
Large crowds began gathering on Chapel Street in Melbourne's inner east from 7pm on Saturday, prompting a significant police presence.
The event is believed to have been organised through a public Facebook group, where more than 5000 people had expressed interest in attending.
A hospitality worker on shift at the time told AAP that hundreds of people had packed into the streets.
Inspector Georgie Swinton confirmed an operation to address the event was put into action, with multiple traffic diversions implemented to ensure pedestrian safety.
Chapel Street is a renowned dining and entertainment precinct, attracting thousands of visitors each week.
However, the strip has also been the scene of repeated criminal activity, including firebombings, brawls, stabbings, and more recently, hooning.
Footage circulating on social media, and referenced by police, shows drivers performing burnouts.
Another video shows people jumping onto a moving tow truck.
Insp Swinton described the behaviour as "reckless and irresponsible".
"A number of drivers engaged in dangerous driving and we will find those drivers," she told reporters on Sunday.
"There's footage of one particular driver doing fairly reasonable burnouts. We will identity him, he will be charged and his car will be impounded."
No arrests were made, although defect notices were handed out to several drivers for modified vehicles.
Police confirmed there was an influx of calls for assistance, mostly for the loud noise of cars participating in the planned meet.
Housing and Building Minister Harriet Shing said the behaviour of the hoon drivers as "absolutely disgraceful".
"Safety for people in and around our roads is of paramount importance and anybody who thinks that they can go out and live in such a cavalier fashion should be absolutely condemned," she told reporters on Sunday.
Police have been cracking down on crime at the popular shopping strip, with almost 130 people arrested this year.
The City of Stonnington has recently endorsed a new plan for Chapel Street, aimed at enhancing public safety, improving cleanliness, and boosting business and community confidence through a targeted program of actions.

Since news of the tragedy, tributes have been flowing for Andres, who was actively involved in the local community. Family of Queensland millionaire allegedly murdered by teen at Brisbane home makes ‘tough call' to close businesses
Multiple businesses owned by a Queensland millionaire, who died after being allegedly murdered by a teenager at his Brisbane mansion last month, are set to close following a 'tough call' by his family. Greg Josephson, 58, died at his home in the affluent north-east suburb of Clayfield on June 26, and a 15-year-old boy known to him has been charged with murder. The death occurred amid a party at the residence attended by a large group of teenagers. In the wake of the Mr Josephson's death, the Facebook page of one his businesses - Cafe Doonan - announced on Monday night that three other businesses owned by him, namely Cafe Noosa, Noosa General Store and Eumundi Sourdough Co, will be closing. 'As some of you may have noticed, we've been a bit quiet on our socials these last few weeks,' the post read. 'This is due to dealing with the heartbreaking and unexpected passing of the Cafes' wonderful owner, Greg Josephson.' The 58-year-old was remembered as a 'kind and gentle man' in the announcement, which stated words could do the loss of the businessman 'no justice'. 'Greg was on his way to create an amazing hub of businesses, with a passion and drive that was unmatched. He loved being a part of this community and had an impressive vision for the four locations,' it said. 'His beautiful family has been forced to make a tough call, so it is with heavy hearts that we announce the closure of Cafe Noosa, Noosa General Store and Eumundi Sourdough Co, effective since Monday 14th July. 'We know this comes as quite a shock, and we're sorry for any inconvenience caused.' Cafe Doonan, an eatery located on the Sunshine Coast, will remain open. Mr Josephson died from critical injuries after being discovered on the top floor of the address about 8.15pm on June 26. The teenager allegedly involved was located in the nearby area on Barlow Street after dialing triple-0, before being arrested and charged. The accused 15-year-old was reportedly remanded in custody. His matter was called at Brisbane Children's Court on June 27 and was adjourned until September 2, according to The Courier Mail. Search for man's remains continues after former reality contestant charged
