This iPhone hack needed zero clicks – and it spied on journalists

Recently, Apple patched a critical iPhone zero-day vulnerability. Reportedly, this vulnerability was quietly exploited, targeting journalists. Citizen Lab discovered the vulnerability. Basically, it allowed for Paragon's Graphite spyware to infiltrate iPhones via iMessage. The issue has been addressed in iOS 18.3.1. Back in April 2025, Apple notified a select group of iOS users (including two prominent journalists) that their devices had been targeted by spyware. Citizen Lab, which is a cybersecurity research group, confirmed the suspicions using forensic analysis. The investigation reportedly showed that a European journalist and an Italian journalist were targeted by surveillance firm Paragon. The spyware was reportedly installed via a zero-click attack in iMessage.
A "zero-click" attack basically requires no action to be taken by the victim. The malicious user sends a specific malicious message and it compromises the device. Luckily, Apple has patched this vulnerability with iOS 18 .3.1.

Another journalist has also been notified by Apple in January of this year about being targeted with Paragon's spyware. This could mean a broader pattern of attacks against journalists. So far, it seems only these specific people were targeted, and the vulnerability has been fixed by Apple already, so you generally have nothing to worry about. However, this incident clearly underlines the continuing fight between malicious users and companies.Apple is generally known for its privacy and security-centric approach, but even Apple can fall prey to the creativity and maliciousness of hackers. It's basically a cat-and-mouse game between device makers and hackers, and it's been like this since tech existed, pretty much. Although we as users can't do much in the grand scheme of things, it's important to update your device in a timely manner. When a security vulnerability has been discovered, usually companies release patches and updates to iron it out, so don't postpone or delay these when you see them waiting to be installed on your device.

Counterpoint: Huawei and Apple lead China's Q2 smartphone shipments

The Chinese smartphone market saw negligible growth during the April–June months with a mere 1% increase in total shipments compared to the same period last year. According to the latest Counterpoint Research report, Huawei and Apple are expected to lead all companies in terms of year-over-year growth. Counterpoint Research China Smartphone Weekly Sales Tracker Huawei is expected to lead all brands with 12% growth in shipments. The figure is mainly attributed to strong demand for its devices during the annual 618 shopping festival as well as the ongoing government subsidy program. The national subsidy program covers smartphones, tablets, smart bands, and smartwatches priced below CNY 6,000 ($820) and offers a one-time discount of up to CNY 500 ($68). The one underlying issue is that the program could be scaled back in the second half of the year. Apple is the only other top-five brand that's expected to see positive shipments for the Q2 period, with an estimated 8% growth. Apple saw increased demand for its iPhone 16 series in May thanks to discounts just ahead of China's 618 shopping festival. Source

Counterpoint: Global smartwatch market continues to decline in Q1 2025

It's not looking great for the smartwatch industry as analysts from Counterpoint have recorded a fifth consecutive quarter of decline with 2% year-on-year slip. However, China is experiencing a surge in smartwatch shipments, with a whopping 37% year-on-year growth. Experts point out two major reasons for the global smartwatch market decline. The first is the waning of Apple smartwatch sales, accompanied by a significant and persistent deceleration in India's once-booming smartwatch market. Still, Apple retains the top spot with 20% global share, while recording 9% decline in shipments. Apple is followed by Huawei, which grew 53%, and so did Xiaomi, from 6% last year to 10%, recording the same 53% growth as Huawei. Samsung lost nearly 23% of its market share year-over-year, dropping from 9% to 7% of the global share. Consumer preferences are seeing notable changes as people are looking for more expensive and feature-rich devices. The $100-$200 segment experienced a 21% growth, while the sub-$100 category saw a 17% decline in shipments. Looking ahead, Counterpoint believes that the smartwatch market will see a modest uptick in sales by the end of 2025, with around 3% growth. Source

Major iPhone 2025 battery capacity leak will have you drooling over one model

The upcoming iPhone 17 series is rapidly moving closer to its expected unveiling in September. It's hard to believe but we are only two months away from Apple introducing its latest iPhone models, including the ultra-slim unit dubbed the iPhone 17 Air. Yeah, that's exciting for some. But there are others like me who would prefer that a new top-of-the-line iPhone 17 Pro Max feature a little more heft and girth so that it can include larger batteries. This is exactly what to expect for the iPhone 17 Pro Max , according to a new Weibo post from tipster Instant Digital. He says that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be equipped with a battery sporting a capacity of approximately 5000 mAh. This would make it the largest iPhone battery of all time, surpassing the current record holder which would be the 4676 mAh battery powering the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Weibo post from tipster leaks the iPhone 17 Pro Max battery capacity. | Image credit-Weibo A 5000 mAh battery powering the iPhone 17 Pro Max would result in a 7% hike in battery capacity for the most premium of all 2025 iPhone models. Apple has really done the work needed to change how consumers perceive the battery life on the iPhone. You might recall that in 2014, Samsung released a commercial showing iPhone users landing at an airport and immediately looking for places to plug in their iPhones. It's a hilarious ad for the Galaxy S5, and if you haven't watched it, by all means go out and do so now. It gave iPhone users a nickname of "Wallhuggers" that they no longer deserve, thanks to the increase in battery capacity that Apple has bestowed on its most expensive handsets. Yes, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be thicker and heavier, but most would prefer to carry around a heavier, bulkier phone if it results in longer battery life. If a sleeker, svelte iPhone is your cup of tea, this year brings the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air to the marketplace. With a rumored 2800 mAh battery powering the iPhone 17 Air , choosing the thinnest iPhone model available this year could leave you feeling great holding such a thin handset. However, it could also leave iPhone 17 Air owners wanting when it comes to battery life. If I were to update to a new iPhone model this year, I would stick with the model I always buy-the latest iPhone Pro Max model. And if this device does come with a 5000mAh cell, battery life is going to be tremendous. Of course, I'm still considering the Pixel 10 Pro XL, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, or even the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to save some bucks. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
