Traffic in the area was blocked off as Washington's Metropolitan Police Department's bomb squad, 'out of an abundance of caution,' examined a bag the man had left on the sidewalk outside the fence, according to the statement from a Secret Service spokesperson. It was not an explosive device, the spokesperson added.
The Treasury building is located next to the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue.
No Secret Service protectees were at the White House at the time, the statement said.
The suspect was charged with unlawful entry and in connection with an outstanding warrant and was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, according to the statement. — Reuters

Immigration department enforcement director Basri Othman said the operation, which began at noon, saw 160 officers questioning 758 individuals, including 254 locals. They also inspected 14 business premises. Those arrested were from India, Bangladesh and Indonesia, and aged between 20 and 50 years old. Basri said they were detained for various immigration violations such as overstaying, violating visa conditions, and not possessing identification documents. He also revealed that some foreigners attempted to disguise themselves as customers to avoid detection, but their efforts were thwarted by the enforcement officers. 'Our officers were in the area from 10am to distinguish between the foreign workers and genuine customers,' he added. All the detainees were taken to the temporary immigration depot in Beranang, Selangor. The immigration department conducted a similar raid in the Jalan Masjid India area on Feb 15.

SINGAPORE, July 29 — The terrorism threat to Singapore remains high, said its home affairs ministry in a report released on Tuesday, pointing to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and 'continued traction of radical narratives'. While there was no current intelligence of an imminent attack against Singapore, the ministry said Islamic State uses propaganda to exploit the war in Gaza and local grievances to reinforce its narrative of armed violence. Since the surprise attack by Hamas on Israel in October 2023, six Singaporeans have been found to support or were making preparations to take part in armed violence because of the conflict, said the report. 'Singapore and our interests continue to be viewed as attractive and legitimate targets by terrorist and extremist elements, due to our friendly relations with Western nations and Israel, the presence of iconic structures in Singapore, and our status as a secular and multicultural state,' it said. The ministry said a key threat was online self-radicalisation, in a variety of extremist ideologies, especially of youths. Since 2015, Singapore has used the Internal Security Act against 17 youth aged 20. Most recently it was used against two teenagers — one planned to shoot mosques, the other planned to join Islamic State. The law allows suspects to be held for lengthy periods without trial, or to be given a restriction order limiting travel and internet access, among other conditions. The threat assessment report also said artificial intelligence was emerging as a terrorism enabler for 'generating and translating propaganda, producing convincing synthetic multimedia, creating personalised recruitment messages at scale, and planning and developing attacks'. — Reuters

Man arrested after dramatic hour-long car chase across Kota Samarahan and Kuching
KOTA SAMARAHAN, July 29 — Police arrested a 31-year-old man after a nearly hour-long car chase that began in Kota Samarahan and ended at Lorong 6, Stampin Tengah in Kuching early this morning. Kota Samarahan police chief Supt Damataries Lautin said the incident began at around 2.50am, when a team from Kota Samarahan police station together with a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit was conducting a crime prevention patrol behind a hotel near Aiman Mall. 'Our officers spotted a suspicious-looking hatchback and when the team attempted to carry out a check, the driver sped off and refused to cooperate despite being ordered to stop via loudspeaker,' he said in a statement. Damataries said the suspect's vehicle was later seen speeding towards Kampung Sindang before doubling back to the Aiman Mall area and then heading towards the administrative zone of the Kuching district police headquarters. In his attempt to escape, the suspect's vehicle collided with a police pickup truck, damaging its rear door. A screengrab from the viral video shows the dramatic chase. Police then sought assistance from the Kuching District MPV unit, City Patrol Unit, and Sentral 10 to block the suspect's route. 'The suspect eventually stopped his vehicle at Lorong 6, Stampin Tengah and attempted to flee into nearby bushes before being successfully apprehended,' Damataries said. A body search of the suspect revealed no prohibited items and checks on the vehicle's registration number confirmed it had not been reported stolen. Police also seized the car driven by the suspect as evidence. Damataries revealed the man has several prior criminal records related to housebreaking and drug offences in Simunjan. 'The suspect was taken to Kota Samarahan police station for further investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties. 'During the arrest, the suspect acted aggressively, prompting our officers to use minimal force. No injuries were reported,' he added. Police have also advised the public not to speculate on the case and to allow the authorities to conduct their investigation fairly and transparently.
