Man charged after 7-hour car chase
Victoria Police released the charge sheet for a 36-year-old man who they allege stole a van on Melbourne's St Kilda Road at around 5:40am on Friday July 11.
The subsequent police chase took the van and pursuing vehicles through Footscray, Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Spotswood, Carnegie, Sunshine, Dandenong and Point Cook as news helicopters captured the wild scenes on camera.
A spokeswoman for Victoria Police said police would allege in court that 'the van was involved in collisions with several parked and moving vehicles, while being driven erratically and at high speed'.
'Luckily, there were no serious injuries. After crashing into a street sign at the intersection of Dunnings Road and Palmers Road in Point Cook, the van came to a stop just after 1pm,' she said.
Footage of the dramatic arrest showed the man bail out of the damaged van's window onto a busy road as the vehicle continued to roll forward.
The man stepped directly into the path of a pursuing police vehicle, before it strikes him and he is thrown into the air.
Multiple officers then leapt out of the police car and arrested the man as he tried to get up.
More to come.
