‘See motorcycle fly': Singapore driver jailed after bike rider killed in rash move
Singapore driver has been jailed for more than five years after causing the death of a pillion rider in a high-speed challenge, with local media reporting he had shown no remorse after the incident. Jarrett Tee Lee Kiat, 30, was involved in 'blocking and braking games' with a motorcyclist, the court heard, and had asked passengers in his rented Mercedes-Benz, 'Do you want to see a motorcycle fly?' before swerving into the path of his opponent on the East Coast Parkway (ECP) in February last year. The collision flung rider Kovan Tan, 27, and pillion Leann Lim Jia Le, 18, off their bike, killing the latter. According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Tee, who was a student at the National University of Singapore at the time and also a part-time chef and social media influencer, reportedly said of Lim: 'She deserved it as she come and push my limit.' On Friday, he was jailed for five years and eight months after pleading guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing the death of Lim, and banned from the roads for a decade. Oxnard man leads high-speed chase up, down Highway 101
An Oxnard man evaded two spike strips and three attempts by authorities to push him off course with their own cars during an hour-long, high-speed chase up and down Highway 101 between Oxnard and the San Fernando Valley June 26. Driving a white work van, the 39-year-old electrician, was pursued for more than 70 miles by California Highway Patrol units from Ventura, Moorpark and the West Valley. The chase began around 7:09 p.m. when a motorist called 911 during an alleged road rage incident in Oxnard with the Oxnard man. It ultimately ended at 8:16 p.m. when units from the CHP's Ventura office took him into custody after following him off the freeway, north on Oxnard Boulevard and through a nearby mobile home park. The man was arrested June 26 on suspicion of felony evading an officer and several misdemeanors. He was booked into Ventura County jail and is being held on $100,100 bail. He is set to appear in Ventura County Superior Court June 30, jail records show. At the time of the chase, he was also wanted on active warrants for three felony gun and ammunition offenses, according to court records. 'He wouldn't talk to us regarding why (he didn't stop),' said Sgt. Mike Untalan of the CHP's Ventura office. 'We can only assume it was for the warrants.' The chase began shortly after Oxnard police responded to the road rage incident between the two vehicles in Oxnard. 'Something happened within the city limits with a female party and him,' Untalan said. 'He started following her. She was fearing something was going to happen, so she called 911.' A unit from the Oxnard police department attempted to stop the man. 'And the chase was on,' Untalan said. Units from the CHP's Ventura office trailed the man southbound on Highway 101 from Rose Avenue to the Camarillo grade. He evaded a spike strip near the Camarillo Springs Road exit. The Ventura County Sherrif's Office attempted to assist with a helicopter, but there was not enough visibility to do so safely. A unit from CHP's Moorpark office joined the pursuit until the county line, when the CHP's West Valley office took over. Those units attempted two unsuccessful maneuvers to ram and disable the vehicle after the man exited the freeway at Valley Circle Boulevard in West Hills. 'The suspect… got back on the 101 Northbound and entered back into Ventura County,' Untalan said. Local CHP reentered the chase and attempted a second unsuccessful spike strip near the highway's Pleasant Valley Road exit. The van driver continued near the Rose Avenue exit, where authorities were able to use a ramming maneuver to spin him out from the second lane of the northbound 101 to the first lane. 'A moment after he was about to get out of the car, he sped off again,' Untalan said. The driver exited at Vineyard Avenue and made a left onto Oxnard Boulevard. 'He was using all lanes of traffic, going around other vehicles,' Untalan said. Eventually, the man pulled into the mobile home park where he was cornered. CHP officers pulled the driver out of the van, ending the pursuit. Joe Curley is a staff writer for The Star. Pensacola man sentenced for machine gun, drug trafficking after car chase
A Pensacola man who led Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a high-speed chase down Pensacola Boulevard in 2023 has been sentenced to spend nine years in a federal prison. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced June 24 that 21-year-old Antoine Booker was given the nine-year sentence for possessing a loaded gun and trafficking "large amounts" of marijuana. "The public should rest assured that law enforcement will not stand for armed drug traffickers endangering citizens in our streets," said U.S. Attorney John Heekin. "If you possess a machinegun to protect your drug trafficking operations, you should know that federal prison awaits you." FHP attempted to pull over Booker in December 2023 for driving a rental car with too much tint, but when the trooper attempted the traffic stop, Booker then fled. "Suddenly, the driver rapidly accelerated and swerved left towards the K-9 Trooper's vehicle who just arrived to assist with the traffic stop," the 2023 FHP report says. "The driver then swerved right into a Circle K gas station located at 7950 Pensacola Boulevard." Booker then allegedly led troopers on a brief chase before he flipped his own car. Following his arrest, Booker was charged in state court for fleeing law enforcement, possession of a machine gun and other drug related offenses. However, the Office of the State Attorney dropped those charges in February 2024 after he was federally indicted on the same charges. "Had it not been for law enforcement's training and determination, this armed suspect would have undoubtedly wreaked havoc in Northwest Florida," said ATF Special Agent in Charge Kirk Howard. "We are proud of the partnerships we've built with Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Escambia County Sheriff's Office and our federal prosecutors." The teenager attempted to avoid the spikes, but clipped the edge and crashed into a parked Hyundai, sending the unoccupied vehicle careening out of frame of the camera. The officer who deployed the spikes could then be heard repeatedly yelling for the boy to get out of the vehicle. Moments later, the teenager exited the crumpled vehicle and was tackled to the ground by the officer, and a struggle ensues before he restrained him. 'Get your f***-ing hands behind your back c***,' the officer shouted. 'Do not f***ing move.' A second officer arrived to assist, and the teenager was placed under arrest as emergency vehicles converged on the scene. The 17-year-old was charged with two counts each of attempted enter dwelling with intent, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a vehicle whilst adversely affected and speeding more than 40km/h and one count of robbery. The boy is expected to be sentenced for non-indictable offences on July 15 while more serious offences will be dealt with by way of committal mention. No application for bail was made.
