
Report: Popular champagne company in crisis after hiking prices
The world's most famous champagne brand is in crisis after a devastating slump in sales. Moët Hennessy, the makers of legendary Dom Pérignon champagne and Hennessy cognac, made a loss of €1.5 billion ($1.68 billion) last year, the Financial Times reported.
The company's sales fell 9 percent in the first quarter compared to the same time last year. It is quite the downfall for the wine and spirits maker, which made over €1 billion in cash in 2019. It comes after Moët Hennessy, which is owned by luxury goods giant LVMH , aggressively raised its prices.
Moët Hennessy has hiked it prices by well over a third, on average, since 2019, according to FT analysis. The company's financial position is so dire that it announced earlier this month that it would cut 10 percent of its workforce, around 1,200 jobs. It has been hit hard by a global slowdown in alcohol consumption since the pandemic.
However, sources told the FT that the company's problems were largely down to missteps made by former CEO Philippe Schaus. Those familiar with the matter told the publication that Schaus became too obsessed with turning a profit by raising prices and failed at his push to sell more directly to the consumer. At a presentation in February last year, Moët Hennessy bosses were given a stark warning: 'Need to save cash!', according to materials viewed by the FT.
Last month the brand's new CEO, Jean-Jacques Guiony, who took over from Schaus in February, told executives that sales would not bounce back anytime soon. Insiders told the outlet that a series of expensive acquisitions had also contributed to Moët Hennessy's woes. Since 2021 the company has spent €2 billion on an acquisition spree. This includes buying a 50 percent stake in Jay-Z's champagne brand Armand de Brignac , Provencal rosé brand Minuty and Napa Valley winemaker Joseph Phelps.
One source said that by and large the deals had 'added complexity, lowered margin and drained cash.' Although Moët Hennessy does not have plans to sell the brands it has bought, it is looking to scale back growth. 'These businesses have been driven by an ambition that is very difficult to accommodate today,' Guiony said earlier this month.
'We have been planning to develop in many geographies at the same time, which is in my view a mistake,' he added. Moët Hennessy's plans to grow its direct to consumer business has also fallen short.
Under Schaus, Hennessy stores were opened in China and a Veuve Clicquot outlet opened at Parisian department store. Dom Pérignon and Veuve Clicquot cases were also sold online. However, the initiatives are now losing the business millions of euros per year, the FT reported.

The £269 fan comes with 10 speed settings, an up to nine hour timer and is adjustable so you can direct cold air up or downwards. The retailer is also offering free home delivery on the device, which measures 1metre high and weighs 2.85kg. The fan comes with a two year warranty in case anything goes wrong after purchase. Dyson jet focus fan hot and cold heater - Argos, £290 Argos is selling the dual-purpose Dyson hot and cold air fan for £290 which is cheapest we've seen out of the major retailers. It comes with 10 heat settings, is remote control-operated, and works either on the floor or tables. It's also, Dyson claims, super quiet meaning it would work well in the bedroom. The fan comes with a two-year parts and labour guarantee. Shoppers with a Nectar Card can also get 290 Nectar points when purchasing the fan. Dyson cool purifying fan - Donaghy Bros, £448 This slightly more expensive fan is cheapest at Donaghy Bros, where it costs £448. Dyson says the fan works by not only keeping you cool but sensing and removing pollutants around your home as well. The fan turns 350 degrees, weighs 4.85kg and is just over 1metre tall. You can place it on desktops, bedside tables and side tables, depending on where you need it most. THE BEST DYSON DUPES Dyson is, arguably, one of the most recognised brands selling fans on the market, but you can save money buying a dupe version. We haven't tested the dupes below - they are just suggestions we've made based on our own research. B&Q is selling a 32inch Pro Breeze bladeless tower fan which purifies the air and comes with nine speed settings for just £109.99. That makes it around £338 cheaper than the Dyson cool purifying fan we've listed above. The Pro Breeze model is slightly smaller, coming in 0.8metres tall, but still has plenty of five star reviews on the Argos website. One customer said the "Dyson looking fan" was super quiet and comes with good power and air purifier settings. Tesco is also selling a Russell Hobbs desk fan that's just £24.99 and £224 cheaper than the Dyson desktop model in John Lewis listed above. The Russell Hobbs fan is smaller than the Dyson one, at 0.3metres tall, but does come with a one-year guarantee. Lastly, Screwfix is selling a Blyss three-in-one bladeless fan which heats, cools and purifies the air, for £137. That's £153 cheaper than the Dyson focus fan hot and cold heater we spotted in Argos for £290. Starmer says he lost grip on Labour welfare revolt due to focus on foreign affairs
Keir Starmer has said he did not get a grip on the Labour rebellion over disability benefits earlier because he was focused on foreign affairs. The prime minister acknowledged he had not got it right, and said he would have wanted to make the concessions earlier. 'I'd have liked to get to a better position with colleagues sooner than we did,' Starmer said in an interview with the Sunday Times. 'I'm putting this as context rather than an excuse. 'I was heavily focused on what was happening with Nato and the Middle East all weekend. From the moment I got back from the G7, I went straight into a Cobra meeting. My full attention really bore down on this on Thursday. At that point, we were able to move relatively quickly.' He insisted there had been 'a lot of outreach' over the bill to backbench MPs but acknowledged more should have been done. 'Would I rather have been able to get to a constructive package with colleagues earlier? Yeah, I would. [But] I believe in the world we live in, not the world we want to live in,' he said. It is Starmer's third admission of having taken the wrong course in recent days, indicating he may be moving to try to reset his premiership. He gave an interview to the Observer saying he 'deeply regrets' having used the phrase 'island of strangers' about immigration and that he made the wrong choice in having originally appointed former civil servant Sue Gray to be his shortlived chief of staff. Starmer will be attempting this week to draw a line under the welfare rebellion, with whips working to persuade Labour MPs to back the bill with new concessions on Tuesday.
