IND vs ENG 5th Test: Gautam Gambhir clashes with Oval curator, Team India alleges unfair treatment over pitch access

Time of India6 days ago
London:
The growing animosity between India and England, it seems, is not limited to just the players. On Tuesday, two days ahead of the crucial fifth and final Test here, India head coach
Gautam Gambhir
had a heated alteraction with Oval chief curator Lee Fortis, with the team management later accusing the curator of being rude and unfair.
The spat between the two, caught on camera, happened during India's optional training session, with Gambhir seen pointing fingers at Fortis and saying, 'You are just a groundsman. You don't tell us what we can do.' The altercation continued for a good four-five minutes, with Gambhir's voice echoing around the Oval. 'You shouldn't have used that word. You can't talk like that,' Gambhir kept repeating to Fortis.

Officials present at the ground calmed things down.
It may be noted that Fortis has been awarded the best curator by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for the last three years.
India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak claimed that Fortis had asked the Indian team management to step away from the pitch to be used for the Test and not allowed them to have a good look at the surface.
'Gautam, I and the other coaches were having a look at the pitch. He (Fortis) sent someone to inform us that we should stand away from the pitch, which was surprising.
We have all played cricket and we know that the curators can get overprotective with the square.

'But there's nothing wrong in looking at the pitch two days before the game and we had our rubber shoes on,' Kotak said after the practice session.
Gambhir lost his cool when Fortis behaved rudely with members of the support staff who were bringing the watercooling box. 'When the support staff was getting the cooling box, which is about just 10 kg, on the ground, the curator shouted at them.
That's when Gautam confronted him and told him he can't talk to the support staff like that,' Kotak said.
According to Kotak, the coaching staff was asked to move another 2.5 metres further away and have a look at the pitch from beyond the cordon. Interestingly, England head coach Brendon McCullum and England team's managing director Rob Key arrived in informal attire, with leather shoes on, and were seen spending a considerable amount of time on the pitch to be used for the Test.
'They (McCullum and Key) were not told anything in front of us,' Kotak claimed.
Surrey county didn't want to give an official version but sources said that the groundsman was only protecting the square, which has seen an enormous volume of cricket being played this season.

Before the Indian team management addressed the media, Fortis was asked to present his side of the story. 'You people saw what happened. It's a big game.
It's okay if he is a bit tetchy. I don't know him as well. I don't know what got him animated. You have to ask him,' was Fortis's response.
'That's Fortis's opinion (about Gambhir) and everyone in this world has their opinions. Curators also need to understand that the people they are talking to are highly skilled and intelligent people. If you go to the ground now, where we trained, you won't even see the bowlers marking their runups with their spikes.
We also see to it that the ground is not damaged,' Kotak said.
'If you sound a bit arrogant when you are working with very intelligent and highly skilled people, you have to know it's just a cricket pitch at the end of the day.
It's not an antique that you can't touch,' he added. 'He said that we are trying to get this grass. I don't know how much grass will grow in one day. You want your ground and square to be good but it's just a cricket pitch.'

Throughout this series, the Indian team management has been seen standing on the match pitch two days before each Test. It never appeared to be a problem for the curators at those venues. 'We understand the curators are possessive. Wherever we have gone in this series, we even had conversations with curators about how they were preparing the pitch or how much grass they were planning to leave for the match. If any curator had issues divulging that detail, they would politely tell us that we will get to see (the pitch) on the morning of the match,' Kotak said.
Kotak, however, said the team management didn't plan to lodge a formal complaint. On his impression of the pitch, Kotak said, 'There is grass on the wicket. There was less grass in Manchester. This is like what we got at the rest of the venues. There is some moisture. They say that normally the bounce is good. There will be some early movement.'

Bad news for Jasprit Bumrah, head coach Gautam Gambhir forces BCCI to take BIG decision due to…

Gautam Gambhir and BCCI are not happy with players 'picking and choosing' matches. (Photo: IANS) Team India managed to heroically level the five-match Test series against England at the Oval in London on Monday. Shubman Gill's side posted their narrowest win in Test cricket in their history by six runs as the 'Tendulkar Anderson Trophy' was shared after a 2-2 draw. However, one of the major concerns for the Indian side was the 'unavailability' of their premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah for all five of the Test matches. Bumrah missed the 2nd and 5th Test of the series after deciding to play in only three out of the five games in the series. The Mumbai Indians pacer ended up as Team India's second-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in 3 Tests behind Mohammed Siraj, who claimed 23 wickets after playing in all five Tests. But according to reports, head coach Gautam Gambhir is keen on putting an end to this practice of 'picking and choosing' matches. What is the BCCI decision after discussion with Gautam Gambhir? According to a report in PTI news agency, BCCI have decided that all centrally-contracted Indian players will not to allowed to 'pick and chose' their matches going forward. 'There have been discussions and the message will be sent across to the centrally contracted players, especially those who are all format regulars that this culture of picking and choosing games won't be entertained in near future,' a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI news agency. 'It doesn't mean that workload management will be thrown out of the window but a more objective approach is expected in near future. Obviously, fast bowlers' workload needs to be managed but it can't be accepted that in the name of workload management, people will miss crucial matches,' the official added. Siraj, who sent down 185.3 overs across five Tests or over 1000 deliveries throughout the Test series. In spite of that, Siraj's final ball of the game – which clean-bowled Gus Atkinson to win the Oval Test – was clocked at 143kph, his fifth fastest ball of the entire series. In contrary to this, Bumrah's pace kept on decreasing in all the three Tests he played. In fact, in the fourth Test at Manchester, Bumrah only bowled 3 per cent of his deliveries which were above 140kph. Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar also slammed the over-usage of 'workload management' excuse. 'When you are playing for your country, forget the aches and the pains. On the border, do you think that the jawans are complaining about cold? What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That is what you expect from the players. Playing cricket for India is an honour,' Gavaskar told 'India Today'. 'You are representing 140 crore people and that is what we saw in Mohammed Siraj. I think Siraj bowled his heart out, and he debunked forever this business of workload. For five Test matches, non-stop he has bowled 7-8 over spells, because the captain wanted him and the country expected of him,' he added. Will Jasprit Bumrah be available for Asia Cup 2025? The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to start on September 9 in UAE and Bumrah would have got a break of more than month before the T20 games for Team India begin. But the BCCI official said that if Bumrah did play in the Asia Cup and Team India ended up reaching the final on September 28, it is unlikely that the speedster will be available to play in the first Test vs West Indies from October 2. 'Look if Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup and if India go the distance till September 28, he won't obviously play the West Indies Test series starting October 2. However, if there are no injuries, he will certainly play the two Tests against World champions South Africa in November,' the BCCI official told PTI.

No Junk Food, Outside Biryani: How Mohammed Siraj Prepared Himself For Long Spells In England

Nearly 180 overs over the course of a 5-match series, Mohammed Siraj truly asserted that 'workload management' is a state of mind. The pacer bowled his heart out, emering as the team's top wicket-taker in England despite being given back-to-back assignments without break. As someone like Jasprit Bumrah struggles to maintain top fitness, Siraj has been able to deliver what no Indian pacer has in recent years. Siraj's brother, Mohammed Ismail, has revealed the fitness and diet regime that the pacer followed for the excruciating workload that he was given in England. "Yes, absolutely. He focuses a lot on fitness. He avoids junk food and maintains a disciplined diet. Even living in Hyderabad, he rarely eats biryani - maybe occasionally, and only if it's homemade. But no pizzas or fast food - he's very disciplined about his body," Mohammed Ismail was quoted as saying by India Today. Many fast bowlers break down when it comes to bowling such long spells in Test cricket but Siraj has been able to push his ceiling time and again, leaving some of the experts of the game astonished. Ismail revealed that, along with diet, the pacer also has a strict gym regime that he doesn't compromise with. "100%, he never gives up, even when he wasn't selected for the Champions Trophy squad, he didn't let it demotivate him. Instead, he worked even harder. He hit the gym, focused on his fitness, and practiced hard every day - morning and evening. He identified what was missing and fixed it," he added. Family Proud of Siraj's show against England Speaking to ANI, Ismail said on India's win at the Oval Test, "We are feeling very proud. I want to congratulate him and all his teammates for making history. I just had a conversation with him, and he was very happy. I congratulated him, and I cannot wait for him to come back to India." Also, Siraj's friend, Irfan, told ANI, "It is a matter of great happiness to us that Siraj did so well. On this auspicious occasion, we are celebrating in Hyderabad. We have also got firecrackers for the celebration. I have not talked to him yet." Siraj kickstarted the match with a 4/86 in the first innings, bowling well in tandem with Prasidh Krishna to restrict England to 247 runs and allowing for a slight 23-run lead. Later, while defending 374, when England was on song at 301/4, he and Krishna once again bowled their hearts out, enabling India to bundle out England for 367 runs. Siraj took a five-wicket haul (5/104), ending with match figures of 9/190, which earned him the 'Player of the Match' award.
