Gardaí investigate discovery of bodies of couple (80s) in their Cork home
Gardaí
have begun an investigation to try to establish what led to the deaths of an elderly couple whose bodies were found in their house on the outskirts of
Cork
city on Monday evening.
The bodies of the couple, who were both in their 80s, were found in the house in Glounthaune, between Cork and Carrigtwohill, by relatives when they called to the house at about 5pm.
The relatives broke down the door when they got no reply and discovered two bodies near the stairs. They immediately alerted the gardaí who cordoned off the scene.
According to a garda source, there is nothing at this stage to suggest that the couple were the victims of foul play, but they are keeping an open mind as to what may have happened to them.

'We tested the house for gas but there was no evidence of any gas leak there,' said the source. 'We don't know at this stage what happened, but it doesn't appear as if they were the victims of foul play.'
Garda forensic experts are due to carry out a technical examination of the scene on Tuesday while gardaí hope post-mortem examinations will help explain what happened to the couple.
Gardaí have begun door-to-door inquiries and have established the couple spoke to someone as recently as Sunday. They have also begun harvesting CCTV footage from the area.

Gardaí launch major probe as arsenal of weapons found stashed inside graveyard
Machetes, together with an array of other items Were discovered by gardaí hidden inside the grounds of Athlone's Coosan Cemetery. Coosan Cemetery in Athlone where an arsenal of weapons were discovered by gardaí ahead of Cemetery Sunday. Gardaí believe they prevented a potentially violent incident out between warring factions in a midlands town at the weekend after detectives seized a cache of weapons inside the grounds of a local graveyard just hours ahead of the hosting of Cemetery Sunday. Machetes, together with an array of other items, which detectives believe had been deliberately hidden inside the grounds of Athlone's Coosan Cemetery, were discovered by gardaí during a planned sweep of the town's burial grounds on Friday evening. That find, which has been described by local politicians as 'shocking' and 'horrifying' in equal measure, came barely 48 hours before hundreds of local families gathered for what was one of the most well attended Cemetery Sunday services in recent memory. Coosan Cemetery in Athlone where an arsenal of weapons were discovered by gardaí ahead of Cemetery Sunday. Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 1st 'On Friday 27th June 2025, Gardaí conducted a search of a Cemetery in Athlone, Co. Westmeath,' said a garda spokesperson. 'A number of items were recovered during the course of the search, including machetes and sports equipment. 'Enquiries are ongoing.' Gardaí are hoping to make further progress in terms of tracing the identities of a number of suspects they believe were behind the discovery. In the midst of those efforts, details surrounding the incident and the motives which led up to the incident have come in for scathing criticism on what was an otherwise warmly received occasion which attracted large crowds from across the locality. 'It was an idyllic evening, the sun was shining, everyone was wearing bright summer clothing and it was just a beautiful, beautiful evening without a puff of wind anywhere,' said local Cllr Aengus O'Rourke. 'Everything that was said you could hear it, be that the prayers that were said or the music that was played, but it's shocking to hear that that there was a risk of unrest or that some had planned unrest of some kind. It's just horrifying.' The Fianna Fáil local politician and businessman reserved a special mention for gardaí who, he said, had undeniably averted a potentially serious incident from unfolding in front of young families and children. 'I am so grateful to the Gardaí,' he said. 'They were clearly on top of their game, their intelligence was obviously spot on because they went there looking for weapons and found them. 'They were well tuned into the situation and behalf of everyone there I would like to thank them for what they did because who knows what might have happened if they hadn't been so proactive.'

Bodies of Scottish gangsters shot dead in Irish bar in Spain to be returned to families
Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr died in a hail of bullets as they were drinking in Monaghans bar after watching the Champions League Cup final The scene at Monaghan's pub in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol where Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan were gunned down The bodies of Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr are to be returned to their families, it has been reported, one month after both gangsters were gunned down at an Irish pub in Spain. Spanish authorities have given the green light for the release of the bodies to their loved ones four weeks on from the May 31 shooting at Monaghan's Bar in Fuengirola. While it is not clear when the bodies will be repatriated and no details of funeral arrangements have been made public, a Spanish judicial official spokesperson has confirmed the move. A statement reads: 'Fuengirola's Court of Instruction Number Two which is coordinating the judicial investigation into the murders has authorised the release of the bodies to their families for them to do what they believe to be appropriate.' The scene at Monaghan's pub in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol where Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan were gunned down Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 1st Both men died in a hail of bullets as they were drinking in Monaghans bar after watching the Champions League Cup final. The horror moment that was captured on CCTV shows a hooded assassin storming the boozer and shooting both men dead in front of tourists and staff. Both men were members of Scotland's infamous Lyons gang which has been involved in a two-decades long feud with Glasgow's Daniel crime gang. The Lyons gang has ties to the Kinahans and it has been reported how associates of the cartel have offered support to the grieving families and told them 'we'll get this sorted." Over the last few months, there has been a series of attacks across Scotland linked to the bitter gangland war. Spanish police investigating the double murder have claimed that the duo were killed by rivals from the Daniel gang. However, at a Scottish Police Authority (SPA) meeting in Edinburgh Jo Farrell denied that the shooting was planned in Scotland, the Daily Record has reported. "At this time, there is no evidence to suggest these deaths are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge or that the fatal shooting was planned in Scotland,' she said. Just days following the slaying of Lyons and Monaghan, Police Scotland insisted that it was not related to the feud However, Malaga-based Spanish police chief Pedro Agudo Novo said that the suspected hitman arrested on suspicion of the double murder was linked to the Daniel crime family. "The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs,' he told a press conference. "In this case, we are not talking about an independent hired killer, but an internal member of the rival Daniels gang who ends up assassinating two members of an enemy gang." The feud, which reignited in March, has seen members and associates of the Daniel family in Edinburgh and Glasgow subjected to fire bombs, machete assaults and targeted violence by a group linked to the Lyons family. As part of Operation Portaledge, Scottish police are investigating any links between the murders in Spain and the ongoing feud. So far police have made 49 arrests as part of the probe. "A dedicated team of officers from our Specialist Crime Division, with support from local divisions across the country, continue to carry out extensive enquiries to gather vital evidence and reassure the public with intelligence-led patrols,' Farrell said. "We are still working tirelessly to build cases and are following a number of significant lines of enquiry. "The support of our communities is essential when it comes to tackling serious organised crime, preventing violence and getting justice for victims. I want to thank the public for their assistance so far and encourage anyone else with information to come forward." Last month, Michael Riley (44) of Merseyside appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court via videolink from HMP Wandsworth, in connection with the murders at Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola on May 31. He is wanted by Spanish police on warrant, and remanded into custody ahead of an extradition hearing set to take place A full extradition hearing is set to be held later this year. Riley has not been charged with the murders.
