Michael Bisping: Islam Makhachev's welterweight move 'might be a big mistake'
Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) relinquished his UFC lightweight title for a move up to 170 pounds. He is expected to challenge Jack Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC), who dethroned Belal Muhammad to claim the welterweight title at UFC 315.
After seeing Makhachev struggle against UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in their first fight at UFC 284, Bisping questions Makhachev's ability to physically deal with welterweights. Della Maddalena said Makhachev is too small for welterweight.
"Yeah, it's the dream first title defense, pound-for-pound No. 1," Della Maddalena said of Makhachev in a recent interview with Eternal MMA. "Get him back for Volk. We saw what Volk did to him. I'm going to get him. He's too little; he's too little. I'm going to get him."
Bisping agrees with Della Maddalena.
"I think he's got a point," Bisping said on his "Believe You Me" podcast. "He's got a point because Volk, we all love Volk, what a guy, he's awesome, but if you've ever been around him, he's not a very big man. He is the man, but he's a smaller man. And that first fight with Islam, he gave him everything he could handle. Jack Della Maddalena is not a small 170 pounder."
Bisping concluded by making a bold statement about Makhachev, who's on a 15-fight winning streak, having notched a UFC lightweight record of four title defenses.
"It might be a big mistake for Islam going up to 170," Bisping said. "It might be a bit of a stretch, but fair play to him. I respect it."

Trump adds soccer to growing list of sports outings as president at FIFA Club World Cup
President Donald Trump went viral while celebrating on stage at the FIFA Club World Cup on July 13, the latest of several sporting events he has attended as president. Trump received boos and some cheers as he joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino on the pitch at MetLife Stadium, helping congratulate players and give some awards. When the Chelsea players gathered to celebrate and raise the trophy, Trump remained among the players, one of whom admitted he was confused as to why Trump was still with them. Infantino eventually pulled Trump behind the players. It was an especially spotlighted role for the president, who has made sporting events a somewhat regular outing since taking back the White House. More: Chelsea put on show in Club World Cup final — only to have Trump steal their moment What sports events has Trump attended as president? Much of Trump's domestic travel has been for sporting events, Newsweek reported. Here are some other events he has attended: Trump and FIFA president share growing friendship ahead of 2026 World Cup The U.S., Canada and Mexico are hosting the 2026 World Cup. (The 2025 Club World Cup was a competition of professional clubs; the 2026 World Cup will be a competition of national teams.) Infantino and Trump appear to be getting increasingly close. Infantino was part of the large group that accompanied Trump on his first foreign trip this term to the Middle East, and he visited the White House, Pro Soccer Wire reported. FIFA recently announced it will open a new office in Trump Tower in New York City. Trump Tower has also housed other people involved with FIFA − an informant in the FIFA corruption scandal had two apartments: one for him and another for his cats, according to Pro Soccer Wire. Another person involved in the scandal spent his house arrest at Trump Tower, the outlet reported. Trump teases UFC fight at White House for July 4, 2026 In addition to attending UFC fights as president, Trump has been close with UFC CEO Dana White. Trump announced earlier this month that the White House will host a UFC event in 2026 in honor of America's 250th birthday. Jon Anik suggests 'most worthy' next BMF title challenger after UFC 318
Jon Anik sees one UFC lightweight as the perfect candidate for the next BMF title fight. Max Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) defends his BMF title against the retiring Dustin Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. Jorge Masvidal, Nate Diaz, Justin Gaethje, Poirier, and Holloway have all been involved since the introduction of the BMF title, and Anik wants to see Dan Hooker's name in the mix. "Dan Hooker, I think, is the most worthy fighter across every division who has never fought for the BMF title to get an opportunity to do so," Anik told Submission Radio. "A fight between Max Holloway and Dan Hooker, I think makes a lot of sense for the BMF title if Max Holloway were to successfully defend it here against Dustin Poirier." However, if Holloway gets past Poirier, Anik admits he'd rather see him go after the UFC lightweight title over another BMF title defense. "As much as I love the BMF title, and I really do, I have come around in totality, full circle on that thing," Anik continued. "When it was first introduced, I had a little pause, but I think Max Holloway needs to be in the business of chasing undisputed world championships. I think he is probably going to utter as much with me in the fighter meeting next week. "So if Max Holloway successfully defends this belt against Dustin Poirier, I'm not sure it makes a ton of sense depending on the style points and the performance, and the fight itself, for him to make another BMF title defense – even though a Holloway-Hooker BMF title fight makes a lot of sense. I think if Max wins this fight, he's going to be talking about the undisputed lightweight championship, and rightfully so. That belt is gold, and it just means a whole lot more to his legacy, which is already Hall of Fame-worthy. But I think he would love to give it another push."
