Norris says missing F1 world championship wouldn't be a failure
Norris cut the deficit to McLaren teammate and drivers' championship leader Oscar Piastri to 15 points in winning last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix and goes into his home British race at Silverstone saying he is a better driver than a year ago despite some error-strewn moments.
The 25-year-old started the season as championship favourite but has been eclipsed by his younger teammate, who has won five grands prix to Norris's three.
It now looks increasingly like a two-horse race with Max Verstappen 46 points behind Norris.
Should he fail to win the drivers' crown, Norris said on Wednesday: 'I'd have to say I didn't succeed in what my goal was but I don't think you can ever call it a failure because I don't believe like I've failed anything.
'I feel like maybe I just didn't live up to what I believed I could have done or the level I should have done at certain times.
'I think if things were much easier and you don't achieve your goal maybe you can call it a failure but when it's 24 races it's such a long season against the best in the world I don't think you can ever call it a failure. Maybe you didn't succeed.'
Norris has been undone by errors in both qualifying and races but dominated the weekend in Spielberg to hold off a race-long challenge from his teammate.
'I certainly think I've improved,' he said. 'It may be very easy to say the opposite from the outside because I've just made some more mistakes. But I certainly feel like I'm a more complete driver.'
He said self-inflicted pressure was stronger than anything external.
'It's more the desire, almost too much desire inside to want to do such a good job every weekend, to deliver for the team,' he said.
'I want to deliver for the team and I want to win. I kind of put myself under the pressure too much but I understand that.'
While Silverstone might be seen as the ultimate pressure, a home race he has yet to win, he saw it otherwise.
'It almost distracts you more in a good way, distracts you more by having your fans and your supporters there,' he said.
'You're almost more there enjoying the moment rather than, 'I've got to do this for them', as much as that is probably a thought before the weekend.'

Mayer set to stand against Ben Sulayem for FIA presidency
Mohammed Ben Sulayem will face a challenge to his bid for re-election as president of the FIA, motorsport's world governing body, after a rival candidate emerged on Thursday. The BBC reported American Tim Mayer, a former Formula One steward and son of former McLaren principal Teddy Mayer, will announce on Friday he is standing against the Emirati. A press conference was called at a venue outside the Silverstone circuit before British Grand Prix practice. Ben Sulayem, an Emirati, is scheduled to attend the race which marks the midpoint in the Formula One season. He has already announced he is seeking a second term. The FIA is the governing body for F1, the world rally championship and Formula E among other series.

Piastri says Alpine radio rant was out of frustration
McLaren's Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri says cursing at former employers Alpine over the radio at last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix was just a humorous way of expressing his frustration. The Australian made a comment after having to go off-track to avoid Renault-owned Alpine's Argentine driver Franco Colapinto. 'Alpine still managed to find a way to [expletive] me over, all these years later, huh?' he told race engineer Tom Stallard in an exchange not broadcast on television at the time. Piastri told Reuters at a McLaren fan event in London's Trafalgar Square on Wednesday that his swearing had just been spur-of-the-moment. 'It was just kind of a frustrating coincidence. My qualifying got hampered by an Alpine. I got impeded in the race by both the Alpines. So it was kind of just a build-up of a few things,' he said. 'And it was more out of frustration.

British and Irish Lions send shock SOS to Owen Farrell
Owen Farrell received a shock British and Irish Lions call up Thursday after utility back Elliot Daly was ruled out of their Australia tour, with his father, head coach Andy Farrell, citing experience in defending the decision. The 33-year-old former England captain, a three-time Lions tourist, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup and has not played any rugby for nearly nine weeks after suffering a concussion. But the flyhalf is a proven international performer and his father said the call-up was justified. 'When you look at the experience that Elliot's had, I mean the experience isn't just the playing side, it's how you make the group feel, the little chats that you have around the place to make sure that everything's gelled together,' he said. 'And obviously Owen would bring a lot of that into the group.' While Finn Russell is the clear favourite to start the three-Test series against the Wallabies at flyhalf, Owen Farrell can also operate in the centre and has a trusty boot for goal-kicking. But his call-up is a surprise with the Lions having plenty of options in the backs and the likes of Scotland's Tom Jordan and Wales' Blair Murray also seen as in the running as replacements. 'Well, he's fit otherwise he wouldn't be picked,' said Farrell when asked about his son's lack of recent rugby after an injury-plagued season with Racing 92. 'I know that the guys have been keeping in close touch with him … and he's been training full ball for quite some time now. 'If he didn't have a chance (of playing), then what's the point,' he added. 'Everyone should be competing. 'That's what everyone in the group would want but along with that the experience brings the support that you need for the group, and again, how you make the room feel.' The versatile Daly, a 72-Test England veteran, was forced off during the second half of the Lions' 52-12 victory over the Reds on Wednesday, with X-rays revealing a fractured forearm. 'It's disappointing for all of us, he's an unbelievably popular bloke amongst the group,' said Farrell. 'So very sad.' It is their second injury setback since arriving in Australia for their nine-match tour on June 22. Experienced Welsh scrumhalf Tomos Williams pulled a hamstring during their opening clash with Western Force and is also out of the tour, with Scotland's Ben White joining the squad as replacement. The first Test is on July 19 in Brisbane, with three more warm-up games before that, starting in Sydney on Saturday against the Waratahs.
