Govt to soon introduce rule requiring silent EVs to have vehicle alerting system
The transport ministry has published a draft automobile industry standard (AIS) for Quiet Road Transport Vehicles (QRTV) requiring fitment of Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS). This safety feature primarily is designed for electric and hybrid vehicles emitting artificial sounds to alert pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users about the presence of the vehicle, especially at low speeds where these vehicles are very quiet.
When EVs run at higher speed, their tyres generate noise.

Sources said the need for such an alert was felt soon after the introduction of EVs in the country, especially after reports of road accidents involving these vehicles as pedestrians could not spot them early. The AVAS is mandated in electric and hybrid vehicles across several countries, including the European Union, United States, and Japan.
While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the US has made this system mandatory for all new EVs sold since September 2020, Europe implemented this regulation in July 2019.

"Since there is a significant increase in EV penetration, particularly in two and three wheelers, and e-rickshaws, now there is a need to bring this regulation. The matter has been discussed at meetings of the CMVR-TSC, country's apex automotive standard making entity," said a senior official.
As per the draft AIS, there may be a mechanism to enable the driver to halt the operation of the AVAS in case of a need. Sources said the standard will be notified soon after completing the consultation process. They added that since this is linked to safety of other road users, govt would have to make this mandatory.
"We are carrying out a study on the need of AVAS in electric two-wheelers," said Anoop Chawla, professor of mechanical engineering department at IIT-Delhi. Apex automobile industry body, SIAM had approached IIT-Delhi for the study.

Apple to launch iPhone 17 Pro with new features and design: Here's what to expect
Apple is all set to launch the 2025 iPhone lineup later this year. The series may offer four smartphones – iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro , iPhone 17 Pro Max and the all-new iPhone 17 Slim. As the launch gets closer, rumours about the upcoming smartphones have also increased. The series will be equipped with the latest A19 Bionic chipset (A19 Pro on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max). All smartphones will run on iOS 26 that was unveiled in June this year with the all-new Liquid Glass interface among other key features. Recently, a report suggested that with the iPhone 17 Pro this year, the Apple logo on the rear may be repositioned. Here's a look at all rumoured features of iPhone 17 Pro iPhone 17 Pro design changes (expected) Apple may be making several design and performance changes to its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models, according to early leaks and reports. The Apple logo on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro may be placed lower than in previous models. Because of this change, the layout of the MagSafe magnets could also be adjusted. The iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to have an aluminum frame. This would be a shift from the titanium used in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro. Further, a larger, rectangular camera bump with rounded corners is also expected, though Apple is likely to keep the same triangular layout for the camera lenses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure your family's future! The iPhone 17 Pro Max could be slightly thicker than before, which may allow for a larger battery. iPhone 17 Pro hardware and camera upgrades (expected) As mentioned above, the iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to run on Apple's new A19 Pro chip, built using TSMC's third-generation 3nm process. This should offer slight improvements in performance and battery efficiency. Apple is also said to be working on its own Wi-Fi 7 chip, which will replace the Broadcom chips in all four iPhone 17 models. The front-facing camera is expected to get a major upgrade, going from 12MP to 24MP. On the back, the Telephoto lens could be upgraded to 48MP—up from 12MP on the iPhone 16 Pro. New camera features might include dual video recording, allowing users to record from both the front and back cameras at the same time. 8K video recording is also rumored, especially since all rear cameras on the Pro models are expected to be 48MP. The iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to come with 12GB of RAM. This is an upgrade from the 8GB found in all iPhone 16 models and could help improve multitasking and support Apple Intelligence features. EU to stockpile critical minerals amid geopolitical risks: report
The European Union plans to stockpile critical minerals as a precaution against potential supply disruptions due to geopolitical tension, the Financial Times reported on Saturday (July 5, 2025), citing a draft document by the European Commission. 'The EU faces an increasingly complex and deteriorating risk landscape marked by rising geopolitical tensions, including conflict, the mounting impacts of climate change, environmental degradation, and hybrid and cyber threats,' the newspaper quoted the draft as saying. The document warns that the higher-risk environment was driven by 'increased activity from hacktivists, cybercriminals and state-sponsored groups', the FT said. The European Commission did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The draft document, due to be published next week and still subject to change, says there is 'limited common understanding of which essential goods are needed for crisis preparedness against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving risk landscape', the newspaper reported. In March, the European Commission unveiled its EU Preparedness Union Strategy, urging member states to strengthen stockpiles of critical equipment and encouraging citizens to keep at least 72 hours' worth of essential supplies in case of emergencies. The strategy was designed to prepare the bloc for risks such as natural disasters, cyberattacks and geopolitical crises, including the possibility of armed aggression against EU countries.

Inflation likely to align with RBI's projection in Q1: Bank of Baroda report
Inflation is expected to remain in line with the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) projections in the first quarter (Q1) of Financial Year FY26, driven by a favourable statistical base and continued deflation in essential commodities, according to the latest report by Bank of Baroda . Taking the influencing factors into consideration the RBI policy projects CPI inflation for the financial year 2025-26 at 3.7 per cent, with Q1 at 2.9 per cent; Q2 at 3.4 per cent; Q3 at 3.9 per cent; and Q4 at 4.4 per cent The BoB Essential Commodities Index (BoB ECI) remained in deflationary territory in June 2025, declining by -1.8 per cent year-on-year (YoY), compared to a -0.6 per cent drop in May 2025. This marks the third consecutive month of deflation, largely driven by sharp price corrections in vegetables and pulses, buoyed by improved production and favourable supply conditions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 모르면 무조건 후회하는 경추베개 "속임수" 공개 김진석 생활기록 더 알아보기 Undo "The outlook for inflation remains comforting for now, as it has the handholding of a favourable statistical base. This is likely to continue in Jul'25 as well. We expect to settle CPI to settle at 2.6 per cent in Jun'25," the report noted, suggesting the RBI will have some room to focus on growth-oriented measures in the near term. Vegetables under the TOP (Tomato, Onion, Potato) category led the deflation trend. Retail prices for onions and potatoes dropped significantly by -26.1 per cent and -20.3 per cent respectively in June, while tomatoes fell at a slightly slower pace of -24 per cent. Among pulses, Tur/Arhar recorded the steepest annual decline of -23.8 per cent, marking the fourth consecutive month of double-digit deflation. Other pulses such as Urad, Masoor, and Moong also showed consistent downward trends, supported by improved sowing in the ongoing Kharif season. Live Events Cereals, particularly rice, also saw retail prices soften, falling by -5.1 per cent in June. Prices of miscellaneous items like salt and jaggery remained largely stable, while edible oils continued to remain elevated, albeit supported by favourable international pricing trends. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, the BoB report noted a modest uptick of 0.6 per cent in June. However, the seasonally adjusted MoM figure actually declined by -0.7 per cent, indicating that much of the sequential rise was seasonal in nature. Tomato prices rose by a sharp 36.1 per cent in June compared to May, marking the highest monthly gain since October 2024 -- a result of early monsoon impact and typical seasonal price shifts. Although onion prices remained relatively stable, they witnessed a much softer sequential decline of -0.4 per cent compared to -9.8 per cent in May. The report cautioned that June and July typically mark the seasonal reversal in TOP prices, with an upward correction in prices expected. It emphasised the need for better supply chain infrastructure , including cold storage and more localised vegetable clusters, to help moderate price volatility going forward. With inflation well below the RBI's upper tolerance band and supply-side pressures largely under control, the central bank appears to have a temporary breather, allowing it to stay focused on stimulating growth in the months ahead, the report added.
