Friendly fire means another delay to Magpie's return
Jordan De Goey has been concussed at training, further delaying his long-awaited AFL comeback. And the teammate who collected him high in an innocuous training drill was vice-captain Brayden Maynard, who has been confirmed to return from his own injury in Friday night's MCG blockbuster against fierce rivals Carlton. Veteran Steele Sidebottom missed Tuesday morning's training because of illness and is doubtful this week. Forward Bobby Hill was at training, but his availability remains unclear after he was a late withdrawal from last weekend's win over West Coast because of personal reasons. Seven Network vision shows Maynard accidentally making contact with De Goey, who looked groggy immediately afterwards. "Jordy got a concussion in the 'fundamentals' (training drills), so he left the track," coach Craig McRae said. "It's a sad week for Jordy, he's just starting to get there and he's obviously going to be in the (concussion) protocols for 10-14 days." De Goey has only managed five games this season and has not played since round nine because of an Achilles injury. The Magpies are taking their time with him, hoping the dangerous midfielder/forward will be ready for the finals. Tuesday was supposed to be a full training session for De Goey. Since playing a key role in Collingwood's 2023 premiership, a succession of injuries have restricted him to 13 senior games last season and now this year's interrupted campaign. Meanwhile, McRae jokingly said Sidebottom has "man flu". "It's probably a bit early to completely rule him out (for Carlton), but I'd say he'd be unlikely," the coach added. Last weekend was the second time this season that Hill has had to pull out of a game late. "It was great to see Bobby back today. We haven't seen him around for a few days, he trained really well," McRae said. "He's a day-to-day thing at the moment, we're not sure if he'll be available." But the good news for the Magpies is that Maynard will definitely return, having been sidelined since round 12 with a foot injury. "He's definitely our emotional barometer and he fires us up," McRae said of the vice-captain. "You could just see today in training - he's gritting his teeth, holding a few things back for Friday night. He's an inspirational leader." The Collingwood coach said midfielder Tom Mitchell, out of the AFL since Anzac Day last year because of a foot injury, is closing on a senior return after several weeks in the VFL. McRae added there is no love lost this week with his old Brisbane premiership teammate and great friend, Carlton coach Michael Voss. "This is rivalry round. I love my mate and I always will, but this is one of those weeks that we both know - we don't text each other, we don't call each other and we just get to work," McRae said. "Every time we play Carlton, I show ... a version of a video, of this 100-year rivalry and what it's meant to our club. "We don't shy away from it, we step right into it. We have to come ready to play." McRae will hear no talk of the Blues' struggles, noting they had a five-day break and were interstate for last week's loss to Port Adelaide. "I'm sure over those 100-odd years of playing each one, there have been many stories like this one at either club. It means a lot," he said. SFNL: The ‘honest chat' which sparked St Paul's McKinnon's unbeaten run
Don't miss out on the headlines from Southern. Followed categories will be added to My News. St Paul's McKinnon had lost two of its past three matches and an 'honest chat' was needed. Now, the Bulldogs are flying and will be in search of a fifth consecutive Southern league Division 1 win this weekend as they look to consolidate their six-point buffer in second. 'We had the results that didn't go our way against Springvale Districts and Dingley (in round 4 and 6),' said St Paul's McKinnon coach Andy Scott. 'We had a really good honest chat as a leadership group and put a plan in place for the next five weeks which we've now been through to really set ourselves up, starting to drive what made us such a great team last year, get that back and find balance. 'We've had a lot of new players come into the squad at the start of the year and it's probably taken a tiny bit longer to gel but we're starting to gel now. 'We've worked out certain guys' positions and what works really well for them and what makes us a better team. 'Now I feel like we're starting that upward trajectory to where we want to get to, it's really positive for us.' Scott added he felt his side had played 'really good footy' over the past four weeks, with wins coming against Cheltenham, Bentleigh, Narre Warren and East Brighton. Last week, St Paul's McKinnon put the Vampires to the sword in the final term, piling on 47 points to run away with a 51-point victory. 'It was a good game, we're finding what our balance looks like,' Scott said. 'For three quarters it was a real tussle and we managed to break the game open in that last quarter and get the game on our terms and ran away with it which was good. 'We haven't really gotten reward like that for the year yet, to actually have a quarter to run out a game and put a team away was good reward for a real tough month.' Brayden O'Toole bounced back from his first goalless match the week prior with a five-goal special, while 17-year-old Daniel Plotkin was also 'really impressive'. '(O'Toole) and I had a chat and we didn't feel his game was that different to the week prior where he didn't actually kick a goal,' Scott added. 'We've got such a strong forward line that you never know which one's gonna get you, it was his turn on the weekend to get reward for effort and he's been outstanding.' Matthew Kreymborg has also continued his strong run of form while Matthew O'Brien and Kye Beveridge were also among the best. The Bulldogs attention will now turn to Murrumbeena in a 4.45pm twilight clash at Murrumbeena Park on Saturday.
