In just the past month, Stephen A. Smith has received criticism from a pair of former ESPN employees.
Last month, SiriusXM announced a multiyear partnership with Smith. He'll have a daily show on Mad Dog Sports Radio as well as a "weekly current events, pop culture and social commentary-focused show" on a separate SiriusXM channel. Interestingly enough, his sports show will replace an afternoon timeslot that once belonged to Michelle Beadle and Cody Decker.

Beadle, who first joined ESPN in 2009, told Front Office Sports that she doesn't respect Smith.
"I don't respect him," Beadle said. "I don't respect his work. He doesn't like me. This goes back to the Ray Rice stuff. He made some really piggish comments on the air. I responded; he got suspended for like two weeks. I think that was sort of the beginning of the end for anything,' she says. 'I just don't respect him. I think he gets things wrong all the time. I'm not talking about opinions; those can never be wrong. But factually, when you spread yourself so thin, it's hard to be right. Not a fan."
Beadle isn't the only former ESPN host willing to call out Smith's character.

(Photo by)On the latest episode of his YouTube show, Marcellus Wiley said Smith didn't like former "First Take" partner Max Kellerman because he didn't act like a "white guy." It was a pretty strong accusation to make.

"I know for a fact that you wanted Max to be the white guy. You know, talk on the white issues. You needed another Skip Bayless," Wiley said. "So, he had to look that way. You had to have a white guy, remember those days back then? When everybody needed to keep the stereotypes alive?' Wiley said. 'We all know what this is, the typecast. You needed a white guy. Problem is, as T.O. told you and told the world, Max is Blacker than you! And whether you agree with that or not, I don't believe in that stuff, but I do know one thing. Max knew more Black culture than you. And you got mad.
"How do I know that? I watched, people told me, people that watched told me. That don't mean he's Blacker than you, but you took it that way. Cause that means you got your own insecurities, partner. The other thing is, you wanted to win the debates all the time and be the smartest in the room. Oh, you picked wrong dude. Max is a genius, I am not exaggerating that. This is not hyperbole, brother. This dude's a genius."
Smith has not responded to this claim from Wiley. If we had to guess, it's only a matter of time before he goes off.

Mets proposed blockbuster brings $13.5 million rental ace to Queens

Help is assuredly on the way for the New York Mets' rotation, but how much help? With Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea nearly ready to return to the fold, the Mets will finally have some rotation stability after a rash of injuries within the past month. Those two can form a formidable top-of-the-rotation trio with Clay Holmes. Advertisement However, in a stacked National League, the Mets' rotation still doesn't look as promising as some of their fellow contenders, at least on paper. One baseball insider thinks the Mets should rectify that by swinging a blockbuster trade for a slumping former All-Star. On Thursday, ESPN's Jeff Passan wrote that the "best match" for the Mets at the trade deadline is Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen, who has had a rough year after back-to-back excellent seasons in 2023 and 2024. "The Mets started 45-24 on the strength of their starting pitching. With a 2.79 ERA that was nearly a quarter-run better than the second-best rotation, they cut the figure of a juggernaut. Since June 13, their starters' 5.61 ERA is worse than every team in baseball aside from Washington," Passan wrote. Advertisement Follow The Sporting News On WhatsApp "Gallen has looked more like his old self in recent starts, and if his home run rate stabilizes -- typically one per nine, it has jumped to 1.6 -- alongside a perilously low strand rate normalizing, he can shake off the 5.15 ERA and be a real difference-maker for the Mets before hitting free agency after the season." With a salary of $13.5 million and free agency impending, Gallen is something of a high-risk, high-reward trade target. Nothing he's done in Arizona this season would matter if he came to Queens and shoved for three months. But it wouldn't be like the Mets under president of baseball operations David Stearns to pay a premium for a veteran starting pitcher. We'll have to see if Stearns is willing to buck his normal trend to make a move he feels is essential. More MLB: Dodgers urged to acquire Twins $4.1 million flamethrower by ESPN insider

Cierra Ortega Breaks Silence After ‘Love Island USA' Exit For Using Racial Slur Online

LOVE ISLAND USA — Episode 715 — Pictured: Cierra Ortega — (Photo by: Ben Symons/Peacock via Getty ... More Images) Cierra Ortega has issued an apology following her removal from Love Island USA Season 7. The former Islander spoke out for the first time on Wednesday, July 9, days after she was kicked off the show following the resurfacing of social media posts that showed her use of a racial slur. During Episode 30, narrator Iain Stirling announced Ortega's unexpected departure from the villa. 'Cierra has left the villa due to a personal situation,' he said. While the show did not offer further explanation at the time, her exit coincided with the resurfacing of Instagram posts in which the 25-year-old used a derogatory slur against Asians. After the posts came to light, fans called on the producers to remove Cierra from the villa — a response similar to the situation with Yulissa Escobar, who was kicked off the show weeks earlier for using racial slurs in multiple podcasts. Shortly before Cierra's removal, The Sun reported that Love Island USA execs were holding 'crisis meetings' to determine her fate amid the growing controversy. In an almost five-minute video posted to Instagram on July 9, the Los Angeles-based content creator explained that she had been back in the U.S. for two days and was now ready to address the situation without being 'highly emotional, because I'm not the victim in this situation.' "I want to first start by addressing, not just anyone that I have hurt or deeply offended, but most importantly, the entire Asian community," she began. "I am deeply, truly, honestly, so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain as much harm, and came with the history that it did, or I never would have used it. I had no ill intention when I was using it. But that's absolutely no excuse, because intent doesn't excuse ignorance." Ortega went on to explain that she had 'no idea that it was a slur' when she originally posted the Instagram Story in 2024. She said a follower later corrected her and informed her that the term was derogatory and 'incredibly hurtful.' "In that moment, I was embarrassed," she continued. "I, of course, immediately deleted the post. I was apologetic, and I educated not only myself on the true meaning and history of the word, but also anyone around me who was accidentally holding space for this slur." She added that she agreed with the show's decision to remove her from the villa, stating, 'I think that this is something that deserved punishment, and the punishment has absolutely been received.' Ortega acknowledged that the backlash has been 'extremely, extremely difficult,' particularly as people have begun targeting her family and loved ones. She claimed that someone even contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement about her family, who no longer 'feel safe in their own home.' LOVE ISLAND USA — Episode 722 — Pictured: (l-r) Cierra Ortega, Nicolas "Nic" Vansteenberghe — (Photo ... More by: Ben Symons/Peacock via Getty Images) "If you want to know that you are heard and that I'm sorry and that I will move differently, I promise you that's what will happen," she continued in her video. 'I know that no apology could ever be enough for the harm that I've caused and the offense that's taken place.' 'I know that moving forward, my actions and how I decide to live my life from here on out, is going to speak louder than any apology ever could. But I do need it to be known that I am sorry, and I did mean no harm,' she added. Ortega's apology comes after her parents shared a statement via her Instagram Story shortly after the July 6 episode, addressing the online hate they had been receiving. 'As Cierra's parents, this has been one of the most painful weeks of our lives. We've seen the posts, the headlines, the hurt and the hate. And while Cierra hasn't seen any of it yet, we have. And so have the people who love her,' they said. 'We're not here to justify or ignore what's surfaced. We understand why people upset and we know accountability matters. But what's happening online right now has gone far beyond that.' Her family promised that Cierra would "face this with honesty, growth, and grace" and "take responsibility" once she got her phone back. 'Until then, we're simply asking for compassion. For patience. For basic human decency. Not just for her, but for everyone caught in the middle of this.' At the time of her departure from Fiji, Cierra was coupled up with Nic Vansteenberghe. The pair had recently closed off their connection, but her exit left Nic single. That same night, he recoupled with Olandria Carthen for the second time. The July 10 episode will see another couple voted out of the villa, likely solidifying the final four couples heading into the finale. Love Island USA airs every day except for Wednesdays on Peacock. The Season 7 finale will air on Sunday, July 13 at 9 p.m. ET.
