5,081 Asnaf Families In Selangor Rise Out Of Poverty Last Year

Barnama23-04-2025
SHAH ALAM, April 23 (Bernama) -- A total of 5,081 asnaf families in Selangor successfully rose out of poverty last year -- the highest achievement recorded to date -- through well-planned development programmes implemented by the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS).
LZS chief executive officer Mohd Khaidzir Shahari said the success was driven by four key initiatives, namely business capital assistance amounting to RM2.98 million, entrepreneurship support (RM11 million), career incentives (RM8.73 million) and the Dermasiswa Pendidikan scheme (RM48.68 million).
'This transformation among the asnaf group is the result of strategic investments, enabling them to become economically active and self-reliant contributors to society. This supports LZS's mission to build an independent and competitive asnaf community,' he said.
He was speaking at a press conference on zakat collection and distribution performance held at Menara Zakat Sultan Idris Shah in Section 14 here today, with LZS chairman Tan Sri Syed Anwar Jamalullail also present.
In a related development, Mohd Khaidzir said that LZS is strengthening its strategic response this year to address the growing challenge of urban poverty, with the number of asnaf households projected to exceed 157,000 by 2030.
A key priority, he said, is enhancing LZS' existing digital platform to ensure continuous accessibility, allowing for real-time information verification and personalised aid recommendations tailored to individual needs.
Efforts are also being intensified to empower the asnaf community through more comprehensive support in entrepreneurship, job opportunities and development assistance, paving clearer pathways toward long-term financial stability and independence.
Mohd Khaidzir added that these initiatives are further supported by the expansion of the Assistant Amil Kariah network, which now includes collaborations with schools and non-governmental organisations to strengthen grassroots outreach and ensure no eligible recipients are overlooked.
'To enhance the accuracy and reach of zakat distribution, LZS will expand cross-agency collaboration and leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and the e-Know Your Customer (eKYC) system,' he said.

13MP key milestone for Malaysia's medium-term development says Lee

KUALA LUMPUR: The tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in Parliament marks a pivotal moment in shaping the nation's medium-term development, according to Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. As Malaysia faces global economic uncertainty, technological shifts, climate challenges, and demographic changes, he described the plan as an opportunity to realign priorities, strengthen resilience, and drive sustainable progress. 'In general, the plan must be commended for its intent to address critical national challenges such as income inequality, digital transformation, green economy transition and institutional reform,' he said. Lee stressed that the plan's effectiveness relies on disciplined execution, transparency, and collaboration across government and society. He called for a robust monitoring system to track progress, alongside regular public reporting and audits to ensure accountability. Strong coordination between federal, state, and local agencies is essential to prevent inefficiencies, he added. Engagement with civil society and the private sector must continue beyond planning to maintain inclusivity. 'Development expenditure must be prioritised based on impact, equity, and sustainability, with a focus on reducing leakages and wastage,' Lee said. He also emphasised public service capacity building and institutional reforms, urging adaptability to global or domestic changes. - Bernama

Legoland Malaysia eyes growth with JS-SEZ and tourism initiatives

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Legoland Malaysia is positioning itself to benefit from growing cross-border activity within the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) alongside increasing tourism initiatives ahead of the Visit Johor Year 2026 (VJY 2026) campaign. Legoland Malaysia Resort vice-president Cs Lim said the rising prominence of the JS-SEZ as an economic gateway between Johor and Singapore presents Legoland Malaysia with new growth opportunities to attract more tourists in the coming years. 'If this initiative grows and more companies set up or relocate here, it will naturally bring more people to the area. 'When that happens, we can expect more visitors coming to explore the surroundings, including Legoland Malaysia,' he told Bernama after officiating the new Miniland Singapore here on Friday. The event was jointly officiated by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs vice-consul Lim En Wei and Johor Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) director Nurazlin Abu Talib. First introduced in 2012, Legoland Malaysia's Miniland Singapore has been reimagined in celebration of Singapore's 60th anniversary. The refreshed attraction features 16 impressive new models built from over 1.5 million Lego bricks. Highlights include iconic landmarks such as the Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer, the Merlion Fountain, as well as the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome. Meanwhile, Lim said Legoland Malaysia has continued to reinvest in facilities and attractions to enhance visitor experience and stay competitive in the evolving tourism landscape. He said Legoland's role in drawing domestic and international visitors is expected to further support economic activity in Johor. He added that the company has seen a steady increase in visitors over the years, buoyed by strong demand from its resident market, namely Malaysia and Singapore, which account for about 60 per cent of total visitors. The remaining 40 per cent comprises tourists from Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Australia and South Korea, among others. Lim said Legoland Malaysia remains upbeat about its outlook for the second half of the year and into next year, which will see both VJY 2026 and Visit Malaysia 2026 campaigns running concurrently. 'We're already making preparations, including fine-tuning our queuing and ordering systems, and we are also making sure that we have sufficient technical expertise at hand,' he added. - Bernama
