France captain Griedge Mbock ruled out of Euro 2025 opener against England
ZURICH (AP) — France will be without captain Griedge Mbock for its opening match at the Women's European Championship against defending champion England. Mbock has been struggling with a right calf injury and trained apart from her teammates on Thursday, two days before France's opener in Zurich. France coach Laurent Bonadei confirmed on Friday that the experienced Paris Sain-Germain defender has been ruled out of the match. 'Unfortunately, Griedge still feels a bit of discomfort in her calf so we won't take any risks,' he said. 'The tournament has only just started and she needs specific care. 'She will be with us tomorrow but not on the field, unfortunately for her and for us.' After England, France next plays tournament debutant Wales on Wednesday before its final match in Group D four days later, against the Netherlands. Bonadei said he was 'quite confident that she will be able to join us quickly.' The 30-year-old Mbock has made 92 appearances for France — starting 81 of those — since her debut 12 years ago. Mbock will likely be replaced in defense by Alice Sombath or Thiniba Samoura, while PSG teammate Sakina Karchaoui could be handed the captain's armband. 'Griedge is someone who is very important in the group, she is our captain,' Karchaoui said. 'But even if she won't play the match, she will still be with us, she always has good words to tell us. 'But today we also have a strong group and we can count on all the players … that's also our strength, that no one is irreplaceable.' ___ AP soccer:

Nationals place pitcher Trevor Williams on the injured list with an elbow sprain
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals placed starter Trevor Williams on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain Friday, two days after the veteran right-hander gave up a season-high seven runs in an 11-2 loss to Detroit. Williams is 3-10 with a 6.21 ERA in 17 starts this season and is tied for second in the National League in losses. He agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal after going 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA last year despite being limited to 13 starts because of strained muscle in his throwing arm. Washington recalled right-hander Ryan Loutos from Triple-A Rochester, a day after demoting him. Loutos is 1-0 with a 13.50 ERA in eight games with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Nationals this season. The Nationals also activated catcher Keibert Ruiz from the injured list and optioned catcher Drew Millas to Rochester. Ruiz had been sidelined with a concussion after getting hit by a foul ball on June 23. Millas hit .143 with an RBI in three games. ___ AP MLB:

Euro 2025: Long VAR review of 4-plus minutes decides no penalty for Denmark against Sweden
GENEVA (AP) — A video review of more than four minutes was needed to decide Denmark should not be awarded a penalty against Sweden early in their Women's European Championship game on Friday. Brazilian referee Edina Alves was whistled and jeered by fans during the long delay. She studied the incident on a fieldside monitor before deciding to award a free kick to Sweden instead. Play eventually resumed in the 11th minute, fully five minutes after the incident in question in the Sweden penalty area. A free kick awarded for a foul against Denmark captain Pernille Harder was lofted toward the star forward who tangled with the falling Sweden winger Madelen Janogy. Harder was unable to control the ball which ran to safety toward Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. Replays of the incident eventually showed Janogy had herself been tripped by a Denmark opponent on the edge of the penalty area as she ran back to defend the cross. Alves was invited to referee at Euro 2025 as part of an exchange program between European soccer body UEFA and South America's CONMEBOL. After seven minutes of stoppage time at the end of the half, Janogy and Alves stood and spoke together. The two seemed to be explaining their actions and shook hands before leaving the field with the score still 0-0. ___ AP soccer:
