France captain Griedge Mbock ruled out of Euro 2025 opener against England
Mbock has been struggling with a right calf injury and trained apart from her teammates on Thursday, two days before France's opener in Zurich.
France coach Laurent Bonadei confirmed on Friday that the experienced Paris Sain-Germain defender has been ruled out of the match.
'Unfortunately, Griedge still feels a bit of discomfort in her calf so we won't take any risks,' he said. 'The tournament has only just started and she needs specific care.
'She will be with us tomorrow but not on the field, unfortunately for her and for us.'
After England, France next plays tournament debutant Wales on Wednesday before its final match in Group D four days later, against the Netherlands.
Bonadei said he was 'quite confident that she will be able to join us quickly.'
The 30-year-old Mbock has made 92 appearances for France — starting 81 of those — since her debut 12 years ago.
Mbock will likely be replaced in defense by Alice Sombath or Thiniba Samoura, while PSG teammate Sakina Karchaoui could be handed the captain's armband.
'Griedge is someone who is very important in the group, she is our captain,' Karchaoui said. 'But even if she won't play the match, she will still be with us, she always has good words to tell us.
'But today we also have a strong group and we can count on all the players … that's also our strength, that no one is irreplaceable.'

Held every summer in the northwestern city of Edirne, the event is said to date back to the 14th century as a way of keeping the Ottoman Empire's fighting men fit and ready for battle. Most young wrestlers train year-round at local clubs, often in towns where oil wrestling is passed down through generations. While the youngest competitors aren't wrestling for titles like 'baspehlivan,' the grand champion of the men's matches, their participation is no less significant as it is key to the continuity of a sport that holds deep cultural importance across Turkey. This year's contest – the 664th in its history – saw 36-year-old Orhan Okulu win his third men's title. Naylor homers as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 6-3 on Machado's big night
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer against his original team and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Diego 6-3 on Monday night after Padres slugger Manny Machado got his 2,000th career hit. Machado hit a hard shot off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading off the fourth inning and received a standing ovation. Machado, whose milestone hit came off starter Zac Gallen, became the fifth active player and 297th overall to reach 2,000 hits. Machado's third hit of the night was a homer off Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth, his 15th of the season and 357th of his career. The All-Star slugger also had a single in the first. Machado grounded into a game-ending double play against Kevin Ginkel, who earned his second save. Yu Darvish (0-1) made his season debut for the Padres after being sidelined with right elbow inflammation since spring training. He allowed two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked two. He got a nice ovation when he was lifted. Naylor homered to center field off Yuki Matsui with one out in the fifth and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. aboard on a single. It was his 11th. Naylor made his big league debut with the Padres in 2019 and was traded to Cleveland on Aug. 31, 2020, in the nine-player deal that brought Mike Clevinger to San Diego. Gallen (7-9) pitched six strong innings, holding the Padres to one unearned run and five hits while striking out nine and walking one. He improved to 4-0 in his last five starts against San Diego. Naylor walked leading off the second and scored on All-Star Eugenio Suárez's double that rattled around in the left-field corner. Gurriel's single in the third brought in Corbin Carroll, who hit a leadoff double and advanced on Perdomo's sacrifice bunt. Carroll hit an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on Perdomo's single. Tour de France stage four preview: Dream day for breakaway artists on climb-heavy stage
After a trio of stages in France's far north, the Tour de France route ventures southwards to really kick off its anti-clockwise jaunt around the country. Amiens is the host town for this tricky 173km run to Rouen, a stage which a multitude of riders and teams will have bookmarked as it really could be anyone's game. It's also one we picked out to potentially trip up the general classification contenders if they don't keep their wits - and their teammates - about them. The parcours is rolling all day with plenty of uncategorised lumps and bumps before the technical climbing starts in the final third of the stage, with five categorised climbs inside the last 50km, three cat-fours and two-cat twos - including the Cote Jacques Anquetil, after the Tour great. Any split in the bunch could be lethal to the chances of yellow jersey hopefuls caught on the wrong side, and it's could be another day of relentless attacking and counter-attacking as riders look to launch winning moves and avoid missing out. The final climb comes 5km from the finish, the 800m wall of the 10.6% Rampe Saint-Hilaire, which is likely to be decisive. Stage four is set to begin at 1.15pm local time, 12.15pm BST, and finish at 5.20pm local time (4.20pm BST). This could quite literally be anyone's game, to the point that it feels impossible to predict. Victor Campenaerts and Jonas Abrahamsen will surely light up the race with plenty of attacks, but whether they make the crucial break is another story, and the former may instead be pressed into service keeping Jonas Vingegaard out of danger. Romain Gregoire also likes this sort of terrain; Alex Aranburu and Thibau Nys can climb and pack a punch too. Of what feels like a hundred options, we're going with Axel Laurance, who likes a punchy stage and has been a constant attacking presence for Ineos Grenadiers this year.
