" Desh Secular Nahi Hai": NDTV Confronts Vigilante Over Kanwar Yatra Crackdown

NDTV9 hours ago
Muzaffarnagar (UP):
Members of a Hindu group who asked a Muslim man to remove his pants to check his identity have doubled down on their act, claiming they have a right to check the religion of people working at shops and eateries along Kanwar Yatra routes in Uttar Pradesh.
The row began after a Muslim man named Tajammul was found working under the assumed identity of "Gopal" at a roadside dhaba to protect himself from Hindu groups.
The dhaba - which has since shut down due to protests - is off National Highway 58 in UP's Muzaffarnagar. Tajammul alleged members of the Hindu group pulled down his pants and thrashed him.
NDTV spoke to the members of the Hindu group for an explanation. To a question why they took the law in their hands when it was the police's job to look into it, one of the vigilantes shot back, "Who has given you permission to ask such questions? If you were in our shoes you would have also asked for an Aadhaar card. These days media people show themselves as secular."
When pointed out that the Constitution clearly says India is a secular nation, and whether they would either go by what they believe or what the Constitution states, he replied, " No, this country is not secular. This is the land of Sanatana dharma."
He raised objections to Muslims working at what he called Hindu areas along the Kanwar Yatra route.
"You tell me, who gave certificates to Muslims to put up boards in their shops showing gods and goddesses of Hindus, of Sanatana dharma?" he said.
To a question why they are doing something which is the exclusive domain of the police, he said, "We can raise our voices. We have a right to ask."
The controversy came a day after the UP government made it a must for all shops along the Kanwar Yatra route to have proper licences and clearly show the owner's original name. The Yogi Adityanath government has defended the move, with state minister Sanjay Nishad saying the accusation holds no weight.
"The party whose nameplate the public has torn down and thrown away, that party's words hold no weight... Our government makes decisions for the welfare of the public, which is why the public stands with us," Mr Nishad said.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said every buyer has a right to know from whom they are buying.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also slammed the UP government over its directive.
"There are many hotels near the Muzaffarnagar bypass. These hotels have been there for years. Didn't the Kanwar Yatra start here 10 years ago? The Kanwar Yatra used to start peacefully. There was no unrest there. Why is all this happening now? Now, they are asking for Aadhaar cards from hoteliers. They are making shopkeepers remove their pants," he said.
The yatra is scheduled to start on July 10. In procession, Kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva.

Make J&K dry like Gujarat: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz

SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq called Friday for J&K to be made a 'dry state like Gujarat' as he opposed authorities' move to open more liquor shops, claiming such steps were 'a deliberate attempt to push our youths further into addiction'. 'J&K is a Muslim-majority region and sale and consumption of liquor is against Islam's tenets,' Mirwaiz said during Friday prayers at Srinagar's Jamia Masjid. The trigger was a protest the previous day by locals in Srinagar's Batmaloo against the opening of a liquor shop in the area that had not seen such outlets for decades. 'If Gujarat can be declared a dry state, there is no reason why J&K should be exempted,' Mirwaiz said. This was the first call to protest in recent months on any issue from Mirwaiz, who is also chief cleric of Kashmir and has been put in home detention ahead of Friday prayers on many occasions in the past few months. Mirwaiz urged the state's Omar Abdullah-led National Conference govt and lieutenant-governor Manoj Sinha to check the trend. 'If govt does not act, we will be forced to protest. This isn't a minor issue,' Mirwaiz said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo Authorities have linked the new liquor licences and shops to a spurt in tourism since the 2019 abrogation of J&K's special status under Article 370. In the case of Batmaloo, excise officials claimed the shop, now shut after the agitation, was not a new one and had been only relocated from another area. Despite such opposition, J&K's alcohol sales are on the rise. The Omar-led govt's economic survey earlier this year estimated excise revenues at Rs 2,000 crore in 2024-25, up 4% over the previous year. Mirwaiz rejected the argument that liquor sales were necessary for tourism, pointing out that J&K had welcomed visitors for centuries without promoting alcohol. 'Has J&K become a tourist spot only after 2019 (Article 370 abrogation)? For hundreds of years, tourists have visited us but liquor was never promoted on this scale in every locality,' Mirwaiz said. Drawing a comparison with Gujarat, Mirwaiz stressed that alcohol was banned there due to its impact on society and asked why similar concerns were not valid for J&K. 'Don't we have a society? Don't we have to live here, too,' Mirwaiz said. According to him, over 1 lakh people in J&K are already affected by drug addiction and govt's fillip to alcohol sales will only aggravate the crisis. Some local Kashmiri Pandits led by an activist, Sandeep Mawa, had recently demanded a ban on liquor sales in the Valley. In March this year, PDP MLA Fayaz Ahmad Mir had introduced a private member's bill seeking such a ban across J&K. But the bill was not taken up for discussion or voting in the assembly. BJP, too, has expressed support for the ban, with former J&K party chief Ravinder Raina having led protests on the issue earlier.

Aadhaar Not Proof Of Citizenship Or Birth, Say ECI Sources Amid Bihar Voter List Review Row

Last Updated: On Friday, the poll body issued a statement that it is aiming to release the draft electoral rolls for Bihar on August 1 and the final version by September 30 As political parties question the exclusion of Aadhaar as a valid document during the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, sources in the Election Commission of India (ECI) clarified that the twelve-digit unique identity number is not proof of citizenship or birth but only establishes that the 10 fingerprints, photograph, and iris scan are those of the person named on the card. An ECI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told News18 that some political parties, including the Trinamool Congress, have strongly objected to linking Aadhaar with the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC), citing legal and constitutional concerns. 'Aadhaar is merely a proof of identity—not of citizenship, date of birth, or place of birth—as clearly stated on the card itself," the official said. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav raised the question of the exclusion of Aadhaar through the media and also in a Hindi editorial earlier this week. ECI sources, when asked, said that Aadhaar just defines identity. 'It is written on every Aadhaar card in bold that 'Aadhaar is proof of identity', not of citizenship or date of birth," they said. Questions have also been asked about the pace of the revision process. Yadav, serving as the leader of the opposition in Bihar, also claimed that the last SIR in the state in 2003 took two years to complete, while the poll body is rushing the process this time. The ECI official clarified that the SIR in Bihar follows the same 31-day schedule for form distribution and collection as the 2002 revision. 'Printing, distribution, and collection of enumeration forms during the last intensive revision in Bihar in 2002 was done between July 15 and August 14, or 31 days. The current SIR is also giving a 31-day window for printing, distribution, and collection of enumeration forms, between June 24 and July 26," the official explained. The enumeration was carried out in 2002 with a qualifying date of January 1, 2003. Earlier this week, News18 spoke with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, who assured that the SIR in Bihar was initiated to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded and no ineligible entry makes it into the rolls. On Friday, the poll body issued a statement that it is aiming to release the draft electoral rolls for Bihar on August 1 and the final version by September 30. So far, nearly 87% (6.86 crore) of Bihar's 7.90 crore voters have received enumeration forms during the SIR and 1.5 crore households have already been covered in the first round of visits by booth-level officers (BLOs). The term of the Bihar assembly is ending in November, and an election is likely to be held before that. First Published: July 05, 2025, 01:16 IST

Maharashtra: Opposition objects to political remarks made by NCP MLA while presiding in Assembly

The Opposition on Friday took a serious objection to the political remarks made by Legislative Assembly presiding officer and NCP MLA Chetan Tupe while conducting the business. Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar too expressed displeasure over Tupe's behaviour. The issue was raised by the Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar and it was supported by Bhaskar Jadhav (Shiv Sena UBT) and Nana Patole (Congress). The Opposition said that it was not acceptable demanding that the dignity of the chair should be maintained. Speaker Rahul Narvekar took a serious note and expressed displeasure saying that such incidents should not happen in future. 'Those sitting as presiding officers should maintain the letter and spirit of the law. It is necessary for the presiding officers to work within the framework of the rules given by the Constitution,' he said. The Speaker assured that the chair of the Speaker will not be used for political purposes. He also told the house that he will take a decision in this regard in his chamber. Earlier, Wadettiwar strongly criticised the presiding officer for his political remarks during the discussion on a motion on farmers suicides and the present state of agriculture amid government's apathy. Wadettiwar read some of the political remarks made by presiding officer Chetan Tupe. 'While the discussion was on, the Agriculture Minister and the officials of that department were not present, but the work continued. Does presiding officer Chetan Tupe have the right to sit in the chair and present the government's position? While the chair has a certain dignity, it is not right to make political speeches from there, such a thing has not happened in the past,' he said. He further said, 'The presiding officer in his statements targeted opposition members for their absence while saying they speak about farmers but skip the proceedings.' 'While it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that the House functions properly, it is the responsibility of the Parliamentary Affairs Minister to see whether the ministers of the department are present in the house. In such a case, the custom and tradition of the House should be followed from the highest position in the House,' said Wadettiwar.
