Segamat-JB ETS not going to be ready anytime soon

PETALING JAYA: Those hoping to ride KTM Bhd's (KTMB) Electric Train Service (ETS) to Johor Baru will have to wait until the end of the year, if not next year, for their hopes to become a reality.
An inspection by The Star along 180km alignment from Segamat to JB Sentral recently found that it is impossible for ETS services to reach the southern city anytime this quarter as significant electrification and signalling works remain incomplete, especially along the 100km stretch between Kluang and JB Sentral.
At the section near Johor Baru, the catenary system is still incomplete, with contact wires and other critical components of the overhead line equipment (OHLE) yet to be installed.
OHLE is the system of overhead wires and supporting structures that supply electricity to power electric trains, and it is a critical part of railway electrification.

The 192km stretch from Gemas to Johor Baru has been touted by some to be ready for service by August, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke saying so earlier in the year.
However, there has been no update since the short stretch between Gemas and Segamat began ETS operations on March 15.
When KTMB opened advance ticket sales on June 30 for travel up to Dec 31, no southbound ETS tickets were offered beyond Segamat.
Last Wednesday, KTMB announced the suspension of its advance ticket sales beyond December, apologising that it will not be offering January 2026 tickets anytime soon.
It typically opens ticket sales up to six months in advance.
According to train systems specialist Yuslizar Daud, the process of fully installing and testing an overhead electrical system can be lengthy.
'Stringing of the OHLE, tensioning, adjustment with the tracks, energisation, testing and commissioning will take considerable time. Then there is the final inspection by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) before the green light is given.
'I don't see (from the picture) how it can be ready even by September,' said Yuslizar, the former head of the now-defunct Land Public Transport Commis­sion's Rail Division.
However, it is understood that KTMB is attempting to accelerate the opening of the 90km stretch from Segamat to Kluang, so that ETS services can be extended to Kluang by this quarter, though it seems that KTMB has yet to submit the relevant application to Apad.
Also happening at the same time is the testing of new ETS train sets, which recently arrived from China, in line with the statutory requirement for the first unit – known as the golden train – to log at least 8,000km without demonstrating any fault in what is known as the fault-free run (FFR).
FFR is a standard requirement to ensure the integrity of the entire system before it could be deployed for commercial operations, and all new train sets are required to undergo the procedure, though similar sets may pass with a lower testing mileage provided the golden train clocks 8,000km or more flawlessly.
It is assumed that KTMB will attempt to operate ETS services to Kluang using its older ETS trains, if Apad gives the green light for the stretch to open for service.
Queries sent to KTMB and the Transport Ministry did not yield any insight, with the respective agencies asking The Star to contact the 'other side' instead.

On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a higher allocation of development expenditure for the construction sector to RM430bil. 'Although only RM430bil will be financed by the government, it is still 8% higher than the RM400bil expenditure allocated to the 12MP,' said Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB). On that note, Maybank IB said the higher spending plan could translate into a greater number and value of contracts to be awarded over the next five years. The research house noted that the previous increase in development spending under the 12MP, which was 54% higher than the 11MP, had already led to a meaningful rise in infrastructure job flows. 'Thus, we believe the 13MP is positive for the Malaysian construction industry,' it stated. While the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit 3 (KVMRT3) was not mentioned in the 13MP, ports appeared as the megaprojects under the new masterplan. This came as a surprise for Maybank IB, given the optimism surrounding the project just two weeks prior. It is worth noting that KVMRT1 and KVMRT2 yielded large-scale job opportunities valued at RM21bil and RM31bil, respectively. On a brighter note, capital expenditure for the Carey Island cargo port is estimated at RM28bil until 2060, while the Westports 2 expansion is RM12.6bil over the next 30 years. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas expansion is projected at RM4.9bil. 'We estimate that they could avail a whopping RM45.5bil worth of jobs,' said the research house, adding that potential beneficiaries of the port megaprojects include Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd and WCT Holdings Bhd . Other than ports, the 13MP also outlines potential projects involving water, flood mitigation, industrial parks, highways, roads and hospitals. These sectors form part of broader national plans, including the Water Sector Transformation Plan 2040 and the Flood Mitigation Plan. 'In our view, potential beneficiaries which are likely to benefit the most from the aforementioned projects are IJM, Gamuda Bhd and WCT. These three companies have the experience and expertise to construct most of the aforementioned infrastructure assets. 'We also flag Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd as a prime beneficiary of continued infrastructure investments in Sarawak,' said Maybank IB.

D'Silva: Journalism workshop to cultivate an interest in the craft among secondary students. SOME 70 Form Four students from schools in Johor Baru will get newsroom experience through a two-day journalism workshop organised by the Johor English Language Teaching Association (Jelta). The Craft of News Writing programme at Ibis Styles Johor Iskandar Puteri, taking place until tomorrow, is sponsored by University Book Store Malaysia and the hotel. Jelta president Vincent D'Silva said the workshop was aimed at cultivating interest in journalism among secondary students while helping them understand the importance of news writing in today's society. 'The occupation excites interest, but there is little knowledge outside the industry about its goals, methods and its utility to society,' he told StarMetro. 'This workshop would go some distance in showing what is involved in writing the first draft of the story.' D'Silva added that the workshop would start by introducing the participants to common newsroom jargon and industry terminology. The speakers comprising veteran journalists and media practitioners, he said, would share insights into their respective areas of expertise, covering topics ranging from hard news reporting to media ethics and digital journalism. D'Silva said among the presenters would be former The Star sports reporter Rizal Abdullah, who would be discussing on how social media reshaped sports coverage. Former The Star photographer Kenneth Wong was also expected to highlight the power of visual storytelling. University Book Store Malaysia managing director Keith Thong would be presenting a session on how newspaper technology is being integrated into modern education settings. 'This course will cover the basics of news writing in its various forms,' D'Silva said. 'While the focus is mainly on newspapers, we will also touch on magazine and online content. 'Students will learn the structure of a news story using the classic inverted pyramid style. 'They will also explore how to write different types of articles from hard news to features, reviews, interviews and social media content.' Another subject for the students is writing with speed and accuracy under deadline pressure – a hallmark of the journalistic craft. 'At the end of the programme, students will be tasked with a project where they will analyse different types of news stories and break down their structure,' added D'Silva. The workshop is held in collaboration with Johor Education Department and an online magazine portal. Johor Education Department director Mohd Hanafi Samad will launch the event. D'Silva added that in conjunction with the workshop, six English language teachers would be recognised for their outstanding contributions to language education. 'They will be honoured with the Johor Excellent English Language Teacher Award,' he added.

State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said there were a large number of old jeans dumped into the Klang River. 'There are so many things in the river, such as mattresses, tyres, bicycles and even old cars, but we find the discarded jeans causing the most problems,' he said. Izham said the jeans get tangled up and damage the cutter suction machines used to cut and remove rubbish found in the river beds. 'Despite the jeans having been in the water for years, they have not decayed. 'So, the moral of the story here is, do not dump your unwanted jeans into rivers,' said Izham. He was speaking to reporters at the strategic partnership signing ceremony for Interceptor 02 involving Affin Group, MUFG Bank and Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd, which is the company spearheading the Selangor Maritime Gateway project. The strategic collaboration was launched by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. On the strategic collaboration, Izham said both Affin Group and MUFG Bank would be contribu­ting towards the operational cost for the Interceptor, a solar-­powered river cleaning machine that came from Dutch non-profit organisation The Ocean Cleanup. Izham said that since 2016, the Interceptor had managed to clear some 95,000 metric tonnes of floating rubbish from the Klang River to date. 'The interceptor is not merely an asset but the symbol of our commitment to find a solution for contamination, especially plastics, in the Klang River, which is one of the main rivers in the state,' he added. Currently, there are two interceptors placed along the Klang River stretch and a third one will soon be placed on another river in Selangor. Izham also said the five-year plan to dredge the state's rivers and clean them up can now be expedited due to the Federal Government's allocation for flood mitigation works, which covers certain aspects of the clean-up initiative. Meanwhile, Affin Group president and group chief executive officer Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah said a rejuvenated Klang River can bring in eco-cruises, cultural tours and new livelihoods for the people.
