EPL legends Terry, Giggs, Berbatov in KL for 7x7 action [WATCH]
Terry, Giggs and Berbatov feel that the 7x7 game suits them perfectly, especially at this stage of their careers.
The trio are playing in the inaugural Zurich Liga 7x7 All Stars, which kicks off at KLFA Stadium today.
"It's a great concept. We're doing something very similar back home," said former Chelsea captain Terry.
"I was speaking to Adam Azman (Liga X CEO) about organising it here. It's a format that works in England, so hopefully this is the start of something we can return to annually."
Terry, who will captain Team Bangsa Bola under Tan Sri Nazir Razak, said the smaller pitch for the seven-a-side game makes it ideal for players who may no longer have the legs they once had.
"The pitch is compact, which is great for us older players. We're looking forward to it," said Terry.
"I think this style of football is exciting. The game has evolved over the last decade, it's slower now than it was during our time, but this format brings a new kind of energy."
Terry also highlighted the format's appeal to younger, digital-savvy audiences. "It blends the worlds of football and entertainment. You have ex-pros, influencers, streamers, and the following is huge," he said.
"Mixing former footballers with social media personalities works. It reaches a wider crowd."
Giggs, who was also in KL two months ago to promote the Manchester United-Asean All-Stars match, said modern audiences are drawn to short, sharp formats.
"We're in an age now where everyone wants things quickly. Look at cricket in 2020, shorter formats are more popular, and other sports are following suit," added the Manchester United icon.
Giggs will turn out for Team Wizards, managed by former sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin. "Khairy's very persuasive," Giggs said with a grin.
"But honestly, we love going abroad and connecting with fans. Myself, Terry, Berbatov, we're always up for it."
Berbatov, who will represent Team Zurich under Zurich Malaysia country head Junior Cho, said this form of football has long been part of his roots.
"Back home in Bulgaria, this type of football has always been popular. Even as a little boy, I played five-a-side, six-a-side, seven-a-side, I still do today," said the former Manchester United and Tottenham striker.
"It's a great format. It forces you to be more technical, especially in tight spaces. It's a great way to sharpen your skills."
Tan Sri Tony Fernandes leads the fourth team who will feature Malaysia's very own Safee Sali in the 7x7 showcase.

The world No. 3 are now just one victory away from reaching back-to-back finals after finishing runners-up in the Japan Open in Tokyo last week. World No. 7 Yifan-Shuxian though have proved to be a tough pair to get past for Pearly-Thinaah before this. The Malaysians have only beaten the Chinese duo once in their past four meetings but are hoping to continue their strong form by overcoming the latter. "Everything worked well for both of us today (yesterday)," said Thinaah in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "There were times when we were under pressure but the support that Pearly and the coaches gave really helped and we hope to continue this momentum tomorrow (today). Pearly said: "We knew their attack is quite strong, so we were well prepared with our defence. "I think we did well on this, so I'm very happy with today's (yesterday) match. "There's still room for improvement and we are working on getting better. We are trying to improve our consistency." Yifan-Shuxian were also impressive in the last eight, easily overcoming another Malaysian duo, world No. 22 Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee 21-7, 21-15 in only 34 minutes. Mei Xing said that Yifan-Shuxian have improved after playing together for nearly a year. "Our opponents played very well today (yesterday). We could not cope with their speed," Mei Xing told the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "Their combination is very smooth compared to when they started playing together. No room for slow starts as Aaron-Wooi Yik eye China Open final
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik believe they are getting back on track at just the right time after marching into the China Open semi-finals on Friday. The Malaysians looked sharp as they dispatched world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun 21-16, 21-16 in just 33 minutes in their all-Malaysian quarter-final clash at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who suffered a shock first-round exit to independent pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi at last week's Japan Open, were back to their best, showing the kind of form that has won them three titles this season. "We're getting back on track at the right time, and we'll give our best shot tomorrow (Saturday)," said Aaron. "We used to train together, so it really came down to making the right changes at crucial stages." Yew Sin-Ee Yi had threatened to set up an all-Malaysian semi-final, but those hopes were dashed by world No. 12 and reigning Asian Games champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty. The Indian pair won 21-18, 21-14 in 40 minutes to book a meeting with Aaron-Wooi Yik. Wooi Yik said they must avoid the lapses in concentration that saw them fall 9-4 behind in the opening game against Wei Chong-Kai Wun. "It was a tight game, but we didn't overthink it. Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba in question vs. FC Cincinnati
Inter Miami will host FC Cincinnati in a matchup of two of the top five teams in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. FC Cincinnati (15-6-3, 48 points) blanked Inter Miami 3-0 on July 16 and surged to the top spot in the conference following a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake last Saturday. Inter Miami (12-4-5, 41 points) rebounded from its loss to Cincinnati with a 5-1 win over the New York Red Bulls last Saturday and sit in fifth place with three more matches to play than each of the East's top four teams. FC Cincinnati held Lionel Messi without a goal in the previous matchup, snapping the superstar's league-record streak of five matches with a brace. But Miami enters Saturday's clash with some uncertainty surrounding two of their biggest stars after Messi and Jordi Alba did not participate in Wednesday's All-Star Game. MLS rules state that any All-Star player who does not participate in the game without either a reported injury or a league-granted exemption faces a one- match suspension. The league has yet to announce such a move. "Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't," MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday. "So we have to manage that as a league.
