NHL draft: Islanders select Matthew Schaefer with No 1 overall pick during emotional ceremony
The New York Islanders selected defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the No 1 pick in the NHL draft on Friday night.
High-scoring forward Michael Misa went second overall to the San Jose Sharks, and the Chicago Blackhawks took Swedish forward Anton Frondell third at the ceremony in Los Angeles' Peacock Theater.
The Islanders maneuvered their way into three picks in the top 17, but they surprised nobody by using their first No 1 selection since 2009 on the 17-year-old Schaefer. The 6ft 2in blueliner from Hamilton, Ontario, with exceptional puck-moving ability and strong defensive skills spent the past two seasons with the Ontario Hockey League's Erie Otters.
Schaefer persevered through tragedy to reach this moment. When he pulled on his Islanders sweater for the first time on the stage, he kissed a pink ribbon patch on the chest representing breast cancer awareness before breaking into tears and pointing to the sky.
Schaefer's mother, Jennifer, died of cancer 16 months ago. He also endured the recent deaths of the Otters' owner, Jim Waters, and the mother of his billet family.
'I appreciate you taking a chance on me,' Schaefer said in a video conference call with the Islanders' front office. 'I promise I won't disappoint, but especially I just want to say to my mom and all my family and friends, thanks for everything.'
The Islanders added the patch specifically for Schaefer, along with his mother's initials on the sweater collar.
'Seeing the ribbon on my jersey, and I saw a picture, it has JS on my back here,' Schaefer said. 'You can see just how high-class the organization is. It really means a lot. I wish my mom could be here today. Obviously, she's with me here in spirit ... Cancer sucks, and it's not fun. She didn't feel the best, but she was always the happiest in the family. She would do anything for us.'
Schaefer scored 22 points while playing in only 17 games last season before breaking his collarbone in December. His acumen on both ends of the ice still propelled him to the top of nearly all draft boards.
Schaefer is just the fifth defenseman picked No 1 overall since 2000, and the first since Owen Power went to Buffalo in 2021. Schaefer also is the second Erie product to go No 1, joining Connor McDavid in 2015.
'First and foremost, we drafted him because he's an unbelievable hockey player,' Isles general manager Mathieu Darche said. 'Obviously, the human being is exceptional. [For] a 17-year-old to have that resilience, maturity with everything that he's gone through is beyond impressive, honestly. I haven't met many 17-year-old kids that act like him. But at the end of the day, we're drafting him because he's a hell of a hockey player.'
Schaefer got two new teammates when the Islanders used the 16th pick on Swedish forward Victor Eklund and nabbed defenseman Kashawn Aitcheson with the 17th selection.
Both Pennsylvania teams were busy in Los Angeles. The Philadelphia Flyers grabbed forward Porter Martone sixth overall before trading up for the 12th selection to get forward Jack Nesbitt, while the Pittsburgh Penguins maneuvered up and down the draft to control three picks in the top 24, swinging two trades while drafting forwards Benjamin Kindel, Bill Zonnon and William Horcoff.
Misa tore up the OHL last season as the captain of the Saginaw Spirit, scoring 62 goals and 134 points in just 65 games. While wearing a teal jersey for the first time, he repeated his desire to play in the NHL next season if he can crack the roster of a struggling Sharks organization that chose Will Smith fourth overall in 2023 and got center Macklin Celebrini with the first overall pick a year ago.
'He's an ultra-competitive kid who's been playing up a level, up a birth year his whole life,' Sharks general manager Mike Grier said about Misa. 'He wants to be the best. He wants to play against the best, so I'm sure this is what he wants to do, but you know we're not going to hand him anything. He's got to come into training camp and try and take a job.'
Frondell excelled as a 17-year-old forward last season with Djurgården in Sweden's second division, showing off a two-way game that allowed him to push Misa on some draft boards. At 6ft 2in, he could provide a large complement to Connor Bedard.
Frondell is the eighth Swedish player to be a top-three selection, joining elite company including Victor Hedman, Mats Sundin and the Sedin twins.
Center Caleb Desnoyers went fourth to the Utah Mammoth, who moved up 10 spots in the draft lottery.
The Nashville Predators chose physical forward Brady Martin with the fifth pick before trading up for the 21st selection to get Kitchener defenseman Cameron Reid. Martin skipped the draft, staying home on his family farm in Ontario.
Fans of the host Los Angeles Kings inside the theater got fired up for their club to make the 24th selection – which the Kings promptly traded to Pittsburgh for the 31st and 59th selections, prompting groans from the crowd. Los Angeles eventually chose defenseman Henry Brzustewicz from the Memorial Cup champion London Knights in general manager Ken Holland's first selection for his new team.
The Penguins created the majority of the surprises in the first round, first by choosing Calgary Hitmen center Kindel with the 11th pick – much higher than many prognosticators expected.
Pittsburgh then traded the 12th pick, which originally belonged to the New York Rangers, to Philadelphia for the 22nd and 31st picks. The Flyers wanted the 6ft 4in Nesbitt, a fast-rising center from the OHL's Windsor Spitfires last season.
The Penguins also gave a second-round pick to the Kings and swapped first-rounders so they could move up for Horcoff – the son of NHL veteran Shawn Horcoff – with the 24th pick.
The Anaheim Ducks took a chance on forward Roger McQueen with the 10th selection. The 6ft 5in McQueen is widely thought to have enough talent to become an elite center, but the Saskatchewan native has been slowed by a back injury that scared off some teams.
Two goalies were chosen in the first round for the first time since 2021 and only the third time in 13 years. Columbus grabbed Russia's Pyotr Andreyanov with the 20th pick, making him the highest-picked European goalie in fourth years, while San Jose added goalie Joshua Ravensbergen with the 30th selection.
The Boston Bruins used the seventh overall pick on Boston College center James Hagens, the consensus top prospect for this draft a year ago. Hagens, a Long Island native coveted by many Islanders fans, slid down the board just enough to reach the Bruins, whose pick was announced by a video of Adam Sandler in character as Happy Gilmore, complete with his signature Bruins jersey.
'I'm so excited to be back in Boston, and to have Adam Sandler make the pick, that was special,' said Hagens, who cites Happy Gilmore as his favorite movie. 'I love to win, and I'm really glad that I'm in Boston.'
The Islanders won the lottery to pick first in a draft that is packed with talent – while missing a few staples of recent drafts.
There was no prohibitive lock at No 1, unlike the past two drafts. The draft also lacked the centralized structure that has long been a staple of this annual exercise. The 32 teams' executives are mostly at home, not strewn across the draft floor. The majority of the picks were taken to a video room just behind the stage to exchange televised pleasantries with their new front offices through video conferencing.
While reviews of the new format seemed largely negative from television viewers and fans, many hockey executives praised the format afterward.

Mauricio Pochettino breaks silence on bombshell report linking him to Brentford job
USA manager Mauricio Pochettino has broken his silence on a bombshell report linking him to the previously vacant Brentford job. The Premier League club ultimately promoted former set-piece coach Keith Andrews to replace Thomas Frank, after the Dane left for Tottenham. But a report from Irish outlet claimed that Pochettino had interviewed for the job along with Steve Cooper. On Saturday, Pochettino was asked about the report by Fox Sports, and told the outlet he was 'never contacted' by the Bees. He added that he 'never talked' to the club, who announced the hiring of 54-year-old Andrews on Friday. Following Spurs' sacking of Ange Postecoglou, Pochettino was also linked with a return to his old club. However, he told reporters that such a scenario was 'not realistic', with the USA a year out from co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico. The Fox Sports report also noted that - with Pochettino under contract with US Soccer - other teams wishing to speak with him would have to be granted permission by the federation. Pochettino has had some difficult moments leading America since he was hired in September, as his side was knocked out of the CONCACAF Nations League by Panama and lost to Canada in the third place match. He also oversaw a pair of concerning friendly results ahead of the Gold Cup, as the USA lost to Turkey and were trounced 4-0 by Switzlerland. Off the field, he has clashed with the team's talisman Christian Pulisic, who declined to participate in the Gold Cup but said on CBS Sports' 'Call it What You Want' podcast that he requested to be included in the Turkey and Switzerland friendlies. That pick-and-choose proposal was turned down by Pochettino, who later said he understood Pulisic's request but that he was the head coach and 'not a mannequin.' Pochettino has quieted critics with three wins in the Gold Cup group stage against Haiti, Saudi Arabia and Trinidad and Tobago. His team will face Costa Rica on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Semien's 10th-inning walk-off single lifts Rangers over Mariners
June 28 - Marcus Semien's bases-loaded single to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Alejandro Osuna with the winning run as the Texas Rangers defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in the second of a three-game series between the American League West rivals in Arlington, Texas. Semien's decisive single -- the sixth walk-off hit of his career -- came off Mariners closer Andres Munoz (3-1) after Munoz hit Josh Smith with a pitch and walked Corey Seager to load the bases. Semien worked the count to full and fouled off two 100-mph pitches before pushing his single past second base in Seattle's drawn-in infield. Shawn Armstrong (3-3) was the beneficiary of the Rangers' uprising after striking out two in a perfect 10th inning as Texas' fifth pitcher of the game. The teams have split the first two games of this series, with the Mariners winning 7-6 in 12 innings on Friday. Both teams managed just six hits each on Saturday. Neither of the game's starting pitchers -- Bryan Woo for Seattle nor Kumar Rocker for the Rangers -- received a decision in the game that was decided in the final innings. Woo, who allowed two runs (neither of them earned) on five hits over six innings, remains the only pitcher in the Major Leagues to have gone at least six frames in every one of his 16 starts this season. Rocker gave up two runs on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts in his third start since being recalled from Triple A Round Rock on June 15. The Mariners struck first when Dominic Canzone ripped a solo home run to right field in the third inning. Texas responded and took the lead in the bottom of the frame as Seager's blasted a two-run homer off Woo, with both the runs unearned because of a throwing error by J.P. Crawford with two out that extended the inning. Seattle got back to even on Randy Arozarena's two-out single to center in the sixth that drove in Cal Raleigh, who had reached on a single. --Field Level Media

EXCLUSIVE Revealed: How Bill Belichick wooed his ex - and then dropped her like a hot potato when cheerleader Jordon came along
For a man renowned for meticulous planning, it was a classic move. Bowled over by the woman he'd met at a nightclub in ritzy Palm Beach the night before, NFL legend Bill Belichick sent her a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. His message to the object of his desires, Linda Holliday, said simply: 'Thanks for a wonderful evening.' It worked its magic. Holliday, who'd been on a girls night out in the Florida beach town, reportedly dumped her then boyfriend for divorced Belichick. The couple were to spend the next 16 years together – before Belichick, now 73, controversially moved on to glamorous ultra-age-gap girlfriend Jordon Hudson, 24. That Florida night in 2007 was the start of a relationship that saw Belichick and Holliday, 62, become a celebrated power couple in Boston where he led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl victories. Yet for her, the apparent gloss of switching from selling X-Ray medical equipment for a living to presenting a fashion segment called Style Boston on local TV wasn't always a bed of roses. How do we know? Enter Hudson, once more, into the equation. She passed on an impassioned letter between the former couple to a woman she believed was a close friend of Holliday and who'd branded her a 'gold digger' during a spat on Instagram. As exclusively revealed, Hudson told the woman she'd 'found' the printed out email penned by Holliday in an old invoice file at her lover's $2.2million home at Hingham, 15 miles south of Boston. Written in 2015, the missive is a toe-curling insight into a relationship and ends with the hand written plea from Belichick's ex: 'In the end, all I really want is for you to… hug me.' The printout – also finished with a hand drawn heart – reveals Holliday was apparently feeling the shadow of something not unfamiliar to women living with a hugely successful divorced man… the former wife. Large parts focus on Belichick's ex Debby, the mother of his three children, who is mentioned in less than flattering terms for her continued center place in the life of a legend now coaching the University of North Carolina. On the surface, the couple's existence together appeared ideal as Holliday staunchly supported Belichick at Patriots games and he devoted time to her extensive breast cancer research charity work. In 2019, she gushed to CBS Boston in a TV interview at the team's Gillette Stadium about her life with the coach and manager, whose foundation she co-founded in 2013. Holliday – a former beauty pageant contestant like Belichick's new amore Hudson – discussed his 'softer side'. Bill Belichick's much younger girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, delivered a scathing message to his ex-girlfriend after finding a private email between the exes Beaming, she said: 'It doesn't take much to make him smile actually. 'In 12 years together, Bill has been so dynamic supporting the causes that are close to me and actually supporting me. And I value and love that about him.' In a suite overlooking the field, she said in awe: 'It's breathtaking, isn't it. From where I sit I have a direct view of Bill and the team. It is a second home.' Of the Bill Belichick Foundation and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, she continued: 'Those are near and dear to my heart. Beside the Patriots those are my two other teams.' Passing a large framed photo of Belichick waving, Holliday recounted excitedly: 'That's the wave. 'He'll turn around on his way to shake the opposing team coach's hand and he gives myself a wave and he gives his daughter who's in another suite a wave.' And of her support, she told the interviewer: 'It's kind of within the family that it makes you feel good that you're supporting him, and you saw the happiness from this win and the love that he has for this game and for the fans.' The exact reality of the couple's relationship at that time is not known. However, four years earlier when mom-of-two Holliday wrote her desperate note she was clearly not feeling the warm glow of his support as much as she would like. Holliday, who obtained a radiography degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, began her missive with: 'Hi my baby. 'I just to get a few things off my chest: I'm not angry and I'm glad we had a conversation earlier.' However she then chided Belichick over her feelings of being shut out of crucial parts of his personal life. A particular target was mom-of-three Debby, 69, who she appears to describe cryptically as 'what's her name that I'm not allowed to speak of ever' – before blasting Belichick for buying three houses with his ex that year. 'I just feel like I'm the one that loves and adores you and respects you and tries never to ask too much of you and tries to ALWAYS remind you how grateful I am of your love,' Holliday implored. But then added: 'I'm the disposable one.' In further desperate tones, she said: 'There are so many things I'm just not allowed to talk to you about. I'm left with writing these things down because I can't verbally talk to you about it. 'You ALWAYS throw it back in my face and say 'I'm sorry you don't think that I do enough for you' and that is the end of the conversation. To answer that… you do more than enough for me for which I feel guilty for ALL the time. 'I mean, you're not married to me… you don't owe me anything. My children are not yours to take on and raise. I realize this to ALL be true!!! 'But on the other hand I see you write a check to what's her name that I'm not allowed to speak of ever and I often wonder why you feel the need to support her… (even now). 'And yet you don't ask anything from her or ask her to respect you. She just demands it. 'You purchased three properties with Debby this year and spend God knows what on the properties let alone the furnishings. And the answer that you have me is so the kids can learn how to rent them out and learn finances.' The couple eventually split in 2023 with sources telling People they had been on the rocks for a while and the problem that led to the break-up was 'not new'. Holliday's plea was revealed amid what is also developing into a sorry saga between herself and Hudson – who in turn is causing some of Belichick's friends to be concerned about his burgeoning latest relationship. Additionally, former cheerleader Hudson had choice words about Holliday when she sent the photos she took of the printout to the woman on Instagram. Screenshots of the nasty exchange obtained by the Daily Mail show Hudson launched the vicious attack by saying: ''Hey babes! Since you are tight with Ms Holiday (sic), could you please ask her what she would like me to do with this letter I found from 2015? 'Due to its pathetic and embarrassing content, I imagine she wants it back.' Mocking 'delusional' Holliday further, she denied playing any part in their break-up. Hudson – whose controlling antics with Belichick include a train-wreck CBS interview that went viral – wrote: 'She should make the point to burn it so she continue to live in delusional denial (that her relationship with BB wasn't doomed yeaaaaars prior to him finally dumping her.) 'I know she cares a great deal to continue to manipulate her friends, as well as the public, into believing that I came in and ruined her perfect relationship.' Holliday would not give a comment to the Daily Mail when asked about the letter and Hudson's views. Hudson has also declined to comment. Meanwhile, the pair reportedly clashed on exclusive Nantucket, where Holliday remains a stalwart on the island's social scene and enjoys a $4.8million home bought by Belichick. She also has a $4.2million spread in Jupiter, Florida. TMZ said she asked organizers of a Christmas party on the island last year to remove Hudson from the venue because her daughters Ashley and Kat were the DJs – and her presence was 'inappropriate'. Holliday was later seen on security video 'confronting' Hudson in the middle of the dance floor according to documents, added the outlet. Hudson was reported to have left as the event was nearing its end. Hudson and Belichick have caused a storm since their relationship was revealed in 2024, following their first meeting on a flight to Florida in 2021. They reportedly stayed in touch and got together after he split from Holliday. The most dramatic example has been of the astonishing gatecrashing of Belichick's interview with CBS in April, intended as a showpiece moment to plug his book, The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football. The coach meekly accepted Hudson's interventions from the sidelines as host Tony Dokoupil tried to make headway. At one point she refused to let Belichick answer a question about how they first met. It was also reported she stormed out of the room and delayed filming for 30 minutes. A string of other sensational incidents have also emerged, threatening to overshadow Belichick's first season in charge at UNC. In one, Hudson made a startling appearance at a North Carolina practice session. Talking with her lover on the field, she looked dramatically – and out of place – glam in a white turtleneck top, snakeskin printed minted miniskirt with matching trench coat and white boots. Prior to that, it was reported Belichick had requested Hudson be copied in on all UNC emails sent his way, Such was the impact of her presence on the field, that a Tar Heels blog of sports site SB Nation had the headline: 'UNC is reportedly concerned about Jordon Hudson's involvement with the program.' In an attempt to stifle such talk, newly-leaked emails by Belichick to a UNC official reveal him writing: 'Jordon has zero involvement in the UNC football program, beyond the degree that my personal media intersects with it.' However, they also reportedly also reveal the extent of her involvement in his media relationships, partially explaining the CBS debacle. In one email obtained by WRAL, he is reportedly wrote: 'Jordon and I have both a personal & professional relationship. This is not a secret. Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests (eg. CBS 60 Minutes) to her.' He also defended Hudson's refusal to let the book interview stray into personal matters – and additionally confirmed their first meeting was four years ago. 'I met Jordon randomly on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021,' he wrote. 'That is no secret. Jordon was not dodging the specific question regarding how we met, but rather was preventing the interview from continuing to probe into personal matters. He also said CBS 'secretly had a camera focused on Jordon'.
