Macron urges inclusive settlement in Syria
On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron called for a comprehensive political solution in Syria that includes local actors and upholds national sovereignty.
In a phone conversation with transitional Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Macron stressed the need to protect civilians and pursue accountability, pointing to the findings of an independent commission as a foundation for legal action against those responsible for recent clashes in Suwayda province.
Macron welcomed the ceasefire announced in the province, describing it as a positive step that should pave the way for dialogue focused on national unity and citizens' rights. He underscored the importance of involving local stakeholders in building a political framework that ensures effective governance and long-term stability.
The French president also emphasized the need for continued negotiations between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Damascus, urging both sides to engage constructively. He noted that recent tripartite talks had clarified the next phase of the process, reaffirming his country's commitment to Syria's territorial integrity.
The conversation also addressed regional coordination with Israel, particularly efforts to stabilize the Syrian-Lebanese border, where "France stands ready to support de-escalation initiatives."

Iraqi politician convicted in corruption case, sentence suspended
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has handed a one-year suspended prison sentence to Jamal al-Karbouli, a prominent Sunni political figure and head of the al-Hal (Solution) Party, a judicial source told Shafaq News on Sunday. The conviction was issued under Article 453 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which criminalizes breach of trust involving the misuse of entrusted movable property for personal or unauthorized purposes. Al-Karbouli was initially arrested in April 2021 on corruption-related charges but was released later that year, on November 28. Al-Karbouli, born in 1965 and trained as a medical doctor, rose to national prominence as President of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society during the post-2003 period. He later transitioned into politics, founding the National Movement for Development and Reform, better known as the al-Hal Party, one of the leading Sunni political platforms in Iraq. He is also Sheikh (leader) of al-Karabla tribe, part of the Dulaim tribal confederation in al-Anbar province. Throughout his political career, he maintained a role in shaping Sunni parliamentary blocs and electoral coalitions, often positioning himself as a rival to other Sunni leaders such as former Speaker of Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi.

Two killed in Baghdad ministry gunfight
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraqi counterterrorism forces were deployed to southern Baghdad after gunmen stormed a Ministry of Agriculture office, killing two people and wounding 12 others, the Interior Ministry announced on Sunday. According to a statement, the incident took place in the al-Dora district during an administrative meeting at the Baghdad Agriculture Directorate. One of the fatalities was believed to be a passerby caught in the crossfire, while the injured included ministry employees and members of the security services. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani directed the formation of a high-level investigative committee. Based on its findings, security forces detained 14 suspects affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), specifically from brigades 45 and 46. The suspects were referred to the judiciary for legal proceedings. A security source informed Shafaq News that the violence was triggered by a dispute over the transfer of the director's post. The outgoing official, linked to the PMF, had refused to cede the position to a newly appointed successor, who also had ties to the same paramilitary group. The appointee later returned accompanied by armed supporters, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the rival factions. Units from the Baghdad Operations Command, the Federal Police, and the PMF Security Directorate were also dispatched to the site and managed to restore order. No further incidents were recorded following their deployment. The clash drew criticism from lawmaker Sajad Salem, who condemned the lack of decisive action by the security leadership.
