Chief of Defence Force leads list of state honours recipients on Kedah Sultan birthday
ALOR SETAR, June 22 — Chief of the Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaafar headed the list of recipients of state honours in conjunction with the 83rd birthday of the Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah Aman, today.
Mohd Nizam was conferred the Darjah Datuk Seri Setia Pahlawan Yang Amat Dihormati (SSPK), which carries the title 'Datuk Seri Pahlawan', at an investiture ceremony held at Istana Anak Bukit here.
The Sultanah of Kedah, Sultanah Maliha Tengku Ariff; the Raja Muda of Kedah, Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah; and the Tunku Mahkota of Kedah, Tunku Shazuddin Ariff, also graced the ceremony.
Also present were Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, state secretary Datuk Seri Norizan Khazali and members of the State Executive Council.
Sultan Sallehuddin also conferred the Darjah Datuk Seri Setia Pahlawan Yang Amat Dihormati (SSPK), which carries the titles 'Datuk Seri Indera Setia' and 'Datuk Seri Derma Wangsa', respectively, on Tun Zaki Tun Azmi and Tan Sri Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim.
Three individuals were awarded the Darjah Dato' Setia Pahlawan Negeri Kedah Yang Amat Dihormati (DSPK), which carries the title 'Datuk Pahlawan'. They were Royal Malaysian Air Force Joint Force Commander Lieutenant General Datuk Zahani Zainal Abidin and Royal Malaysian Navy Deputy Chief Vice Admiral Datuk Ts Shamsuddin Ludin.
Kedah Public Works, Natural Resources, Water Supply and Environment Committee chairman Mohamad Yusoff Zakaria received the Darjah Dato' Setia Sultan Sallehuddin Kedah (DSSS), which carries the title 'Datuk'.
Six individuals were conferred the Darjah Dato' Setia Diraja Kedah (DSDK), which also carries the title 'Datuk'. They were Kubang Pasu District Officer Muhamad Mahazi Ibrahim; Malaysian Ambassador to Bahrain Shazryll Zahiran; Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli; Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Investigation Division director Datuk Zainul Darus; Honorary Secretary of the Kedah State Council of Justices of the Peace Ahmad Fatahi Omar; and Fuji Electric Malaysia Sdn Bhd executive director Chong Nee Hwa.
The Darjah Dato' Setia Pahlawan (DDSP), which carries the title 'Datuk', was bestowed on the Ministry of Defence's Logistics Division Assistant Chief of Staff Brigadier General Abd Hafiz Ahmad and Malaysian Armed Forces Director of Infantry Brigadier General Saiful Bahari Zainol.
Four individuals received the Darjah Setia Sultan Sallehuddin Kedah (SSS), namely Kedah Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee chairman Dzowahir Abdul Ghani; Kedah Human Resources, Chinese, Indian and Siamese Communities and Non-Governmental Organisation Committee chairman Wong Chia Zhen; Ayer Hitam assemblyman Azhar Ibrahim; and Tunku Putri Nur Asma Dato' Paduka Tunku Ja'afar Laksmana.
Eight recipients were conferred the Setia Diraja Kedah (SDK), among them Sungai Petani Municipal Council president Tunku Iskandar Shah Tunku Muszaffar Shah; Pendang district officer Nasrun Mohd Sheriff; consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital Dr N. Kantha Rao; and Veterinary Services Department senior director Dr Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Haron.
Also receiving the Setia Diraja Kedah (SDK) were Public Works Department Building Facility Maintenance Branch director Ir Ahmad Shahruzi Ahmad; Kedah Forestry Department director Muhamad Abdullah; Kedah Squash Association president Andrew Lim Hwa Eng; and Kedah Sailing Association deputy president Mohd Afendy Abdullah.
A total of 34 individuals were honoured with the Ahli Mahkota Kedah (AMK); 11 received the Ahli Setia Pahlawan (ASP); 24, the Bintang Perkhidmatan Cemerlang Kedah (BCK); 46, the Bintang Kebaktian Masyarakat (BKM); four, the Ahli Cemerlang Semangat Jerai Kedah (ASK); 27, the Pingat Perkhidmatan Cemerlang Kedah (PCK); 41, the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK); and 22, the Pingat Perkhidmatan Lama (PPL). — Bernama

Umno supreme council may address Hishammuddin's suspension on Monday, says Ahmad Maslan
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — The suspension of Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein is set to be discussed at the Umno supreme council meeting on Monday. According to Berita Harian, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the meeting will be held in the evening, and if Johor Umno chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi raises the issue, it will be addressed. 'I'm not stating whether I support or oppose it, but this issue must follow the established procedures. 'The original suspension decision was made by the supreme council, so any further decisions will also be taken during the meeting. 'We'll wait until Monday,' he said during a press conference in Bachok today. Earlier reports indicated that the Sembrong Umno Division had proposed reinstating Hishammuddin's membership to strengthen the party ahead of the upcoming general election. Hishammuddin's Umno membership was suspended for six years, or two supreme council election terms, starting January 27, 2023.

Malaysia eyes nuclear energy revival, stronger ties with Uzbekistan, Russia
MOSCOW, June 28 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has concluded his eight-day working visit to Uzbekistan and Russia, marking a pivotal step in Malaysia's renewed efforts to strengthen strategic international partnerships. The visit focused on the potential revival of Malaysia's nuclear energy programme, alongside collaboration in the halal economy, tourism, energy investments and Islamic finance. A key milestone was the signing of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) between MyPower Corporation, a special-purpose agency under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), and the Russian state atomic energy agency Rosatom. The agreement paves the way for potential cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, as Malaysia re-evaluates its long-term energy strategy. As Malaysia advances its National Energy Transition Roadmap, nuclear energy is being seriously considered as a reliable, clean baseload option to diversify the energy mix and achieve long-term climate and energy security goals. Malaysia previously had a robust nuclear development agenda, including plans to commission two nuclear power plants by 2021. However, these plans were shelved, and the Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation was disbanded in 2018. Today, amid increasing pressure to decarbonise and diversify its energy sources, nuclear energy is once again under consideration as a viable low-carbon option. A recently completed pre-feasibility study yielded encouraging findings, prompting the government to explore implementation pathways that align fully with global safety, security and non-proliferation standards. The visit also reinforced Malaysia's global halal leadership. Both Uzbekistan and Russia expressed strong interest in leveraging Malaysia's well-established halal ecosystem. Additionally, the Uzbek government extended a formal invitation to Malaysia's national oil and gas company, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), to consider reinvesting in the republic's energy sector. Petronas had exited Uzbekistan in 2013, but new opportunities in exploration and upstream development have emerged as Uzbekistan seeks to revitalise its energy landscape. Tourism ties were boosted by AirAsia X's launch of direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tashkent, operating three times weekly. Recognising the potential to further enhance travel and trade, Fadillah encouraged AirAsia X to expand its route to include Samarkand, a historic Silk Road city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering added value for both leisure and cultural tourism. Uzbekistan is also keen to collaborate with Malaysia on carbon trading, and has expressed interest in tapping Malaysia's extensive experience in developing the sukuk market — an area in which Malaysia is widely recognised as a global leader in Islamic finance. — Bernama

Young voters want credibility, not nostalgia, Johari tells Umno members
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani today urged Umno delegates to shift their mindset and move away from clinging to past leadership glory, as the political landscape continues to evolve. According to Buletin TV3, the Umno vice-president said 40 per cent of voters in the next general election will be made up of young Malaysians, whose expectations and outlook differ from previous generations. 'These young people are not interested in narratives that divide Malaysia's multiracial society. Their friends come from diverse backgrounds. 'What they want is a leader who can navigate and shape a harmonious multiracial nation,' he said during his keynote address at the 2025 Titiwangsa Umno Division Delegates' Meeting today. Johari, who is also the Titiwangsa Umno division chief, said the party must remain inclusive and not marginalise non-Malay communities. He warned that failure to move beyond outdated thinking could result in a loss of trust among young voters. 'They're not interested in nostalgia. They want to see whether future leaders are transparent, open, and free of corruption. 'They are evaluating leaders based on integrity, credibility, and their knowledge to build a better future for their generation — and those to come. 'They're also looking for strong commitment from leaders — those who are willing to sacrifice time, effort and ideas for the nation without expecting rewards,' he reportedly said. Johari, who also serves as minister of plantation and commodities, said Umno delegates carry the responsibility of developing credible community leaders who can be seen as products of the party.
