Pahang hit pause button to plot stronger M-League comeback
PETALING JAYA: Pahang do not see their withdrawal from the new Super League season as an end to their football journey. Instead, the club described their difficult decision as a 'strategic pause' aimed at strengthening the team's internal structure and laying the foundation for long-term sustainability before making a comeback. In a statement released on Thursday night, Pahang emphasised that the move was a necessary step to secure the future of the club, who have long been a cornerstone of Malaysian football. 'We hope to return better equipped to contribute to the growth of football in the state of Pahang.' The club's management cited the need for time to rebuild and improve internal operations, administrative efficiency, and overall development strategies to meet the demands of modern footballing era. Pahang also took the opportunity to thank all stakeholders, including league organisers, sponsors, authorities, and especially their dedicated supporters. 'We thank all parties who have stood by us. Your unwavering support means the world, and we hope to see you again in the seasons to come.' Pahang's exit follows similar moves by Kedah and Perak, both of which pulled out of the Malaysian League due to ongoing financial struggles, including unresolved salary arrears. Nafuzi adopts bold approach to evaluate players ahead of AFF U-23 C'ship
PETALING JAYA: With time ticking ahead of the AFF Under-23 Championship in Jakarta, Malaysia coach Nafuzi Zain is taking a bold approach in evaluating players – he has rolled out a series of internal sparring matches called the Elite Games. The initiative, which runs from June 22-25, aims to provide a testing ground for 26 of the nation's most promising young footballers. It's a critical phase for Nafuzi, who has less than a month to shape a squad capable of navigating a tricky Group A that features the Philippines (July 15), Brunei (July 18), and hosts Indonesia (July 21) at the iconic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. 'We have a lot of youngsters who represent the future of Malaysian football,' said Nafuzi. 'This Elite Games phase allows us to monitor these players closely before our centralised camp starts on July 1.' Nafuzi, known for his keen eye for youth development from his days with Terengganu and Kedah, is putting faith in locally based players, as the AFF U-23 Championship will feature a fully domestic squad. 'It's a short window to evaluate and prepare, but this platform gives us clarity on the boys' technical abilities, mental strength and how they respond in competitive situations,' he added. Complementing the talent pool are players like centreback Ubaidullah Shamsul and striker Haqimi Azim Rosli, who have trained with the senior squad. That stint, according to Nafuzi, offered invaluable exposure and a taste of the standards required at the highest level. 'We're working closely with coach Peter (Cklamovski), and the playing style we're adopting mirrors the national team's. That's essential for continuity and long-term development.'

Hyundai boosts Malaysian presence with new direct subsidiary HMY
South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor has established its new subsidiary headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The new local entity, Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMY), marks its direct entry into the Malaysian market. The company has moved from a distributor-led model with Sime Motors to a principal-led operational strategy. This change emphasises improved customer engagement with a focus on innovation and long-term growth. HMY will oversee brand, marketing, sales, and customer experience by establishing a dedicated local team. This team will enable quicker, market-driven decisions and foster a more customer-centric approach. The new subsidiary is expanding its team to build a strong nationwide dealer network with plans to grow its workforce to 100 employees by the end of the year. HMY will launch three new models in the SUV and MPV segments. It also plans to set up local assembly operations in Kedah by Q3 2025. This facility aims to produce up to seven car models over five years. Initially, the expansion will focus on assembling internal combustion engines and hybrid electric vehicles. As production ramps up, it will export approximately 30% of locally assembled vehicles to neighbouring markets. HMY also plans to enhance its dealer and after-sales network by modernising showrooms and improving digital integration. Additionally, it will upgrade its service network, with plans to expand to 25 outlets by 2030. Eric Lee, president of Hyundai Motor Malaysia, stated that the local establishment aims to bring the strength and agility of the brand 'closer to home.' Jahabarnisa Haja Mohideen, managing director of Hyundai Motor Malaysia, remarked that the country is full of untapped potential. 'It boasts the highest passenger vehicle demand in ASEAN at 35%, with a steady GDP growth of 4.3%, signalling strong consumer confidence and rising spending power,' he added. Since 2024, Hyundai Motor has announced investments in the US, Germany, India, and Brazil, among others.
