Flash flood warning for Chicago area as severe storms roll through Friday
There is a Flash Flood Warning in effect for Cook and DuPage counties until 2:45 p.m., and a Flood Advisory for Cook and Will counties until 3:25 p.m.
Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports were placed under a ground stop as the storms moved, in though they had been lifted as of 2 p.m. Both are still under ground delays, with delays averaging 1 hour and 7 minutes at Midway and 1 hour and 15 minutes at O'Hare. O'Hare is also experiencing departure delays averaging 1 hour and 45 minutes.
There are reports of car rescues due to flooding in Washington Park on South State Street. Local officials have not provided an update on the incident.
Torrential rain rates of 3 inches per hour are possible, and storms are sitting in place, leading to extremely high rain totals potentially exceeding 5 inches this afternoon in parts of the city.
Basement and roadway flooding are likely during severe weather. If you encounter a flooded roadway, never drive through it-"Turn around, don't drown!"
The storm threats remain in place on Friday and through the weekend, with the possibility of additional rounds of flooding in parts of the area.
Residents are asked to contact 311 to report flooding.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected for parts of West Michigan this evening. Inside Radar A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Ottawa, Kent and Ionia counties south until 10 p.m. Thursday. Damaging winds are the primary concern with any storms that develop. Most of West Michigan has been placed in a level 2 out of 5 severe risk by the Storm Prediction Center through Thursday night. A cold front will slowly advance into a very hot and humid environment, making it easy for storms to erupt quickly. Upper-level wind support is quite weak. As a result, storms will move slowly and severe storms will have a short lifespan. The cold front will take its time moving through the state, and may even produce rain early Friday morning south of I-96. Hot weather in NYC on Saturday as more storms approach. Here's the First Alert Forecast.
After Friday's heat and strong storms, we're in much better shape weatherwise today in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures climbing into the mid 80s Saturday. Humidity will be gradually falling, so it will feel close to the actual air temperature. Tonight, clouds increase and there is a chance of a shower or two after midnight. Lows will be in the upper 60s and low 70s. Sunday is our next First Alert Weather Day. There will be plenty of clouds with rounds of showers and storms throughout the day tomorrow. Humidity spikes again, too, so any downpours will be capable of brief heavy rain. Localized spots of flash flooding are certainly possible wherever the heaviest cells move through. Additionally, there is a marginal severe weather risk for the late afternoon and early evening hours. The best chance of some stronger storms will be southwest of New York City. While not a complete washout, try to have alternative plans in place. After sunset, things quiet down before our next round of heat. Heat indices early next week will likely exceed 100 with highs back into the low and mid 90s. Tuesday looks like the day for peak heat. Then, some more storm chances likely move in ahead of a cold front by midweek.
