98% of ED cases involving politicians filed against opposition leaders: TMC's Saket Gokhale

The Hindu03-05-2025
Trinamool Congress leader Saket Mr. Gokhale on Saturday (May 3, 2025) said 98% of the cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate against politicians were against Opposition leaders.
'The remaining two% are those who went and joined the BJP's 'washing machine,'' he said.
Mr. Gokhale referred to Thursday's (May 1) statement of ED Director Rahul Navin, to claim that the surge in cases post-2014 was at the behest of Narendra Modi, who came to power the same year.
Speaking at an event on ED Day, Mr. Navin said the anti-money laundering law had been 'largely ineffective' before 2014 and there has been a significant step-up in enforcement activity since then.
In a post on X, Mr. Gokhale said, 'Yesterday, the head of central agency ED admitted that there's been a surge of cases filed after Modi Government came to power in 2014.' 'In the last 11 years, a total of 5,297 cases were filed by ED. How many were taken to court for trial? Only 47,' he said.
The TMC Rajya Sabha MP said the conviction rate in ED cases is only 0.7%.
'That means out of every 1,000 cases filed, accused were found guilty in only seven cases,' he said.
'Therefore, out of every 1,000 cases, 993 cases are filed by ED purely to keep a person in jail because getting bail under the draconian PMLA is almost impossible,' he said.
According to the ED Director, 1,739 cases filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act are under trial at present. He said out of the 47 cases decided by courts, the conviction rate was 93.6% with only three acquittals.
Meanwhile, Mr. Gokhale accused the Centre of using the probe process as a punishment.
'The idea is to turn the process into punishment in order to blackmail and extort the innocent accused into breaking down and following the orders of the BJP,' he said.
Mr. Navin on Thursday (May 1) claimed that the slowdown in the adjudication of these cases could be attributed to a 'general delay' in the judicial system of the country, combined with the inherent complexity of such investigations.
Speaking at an event held in New Delhi to mark the ED Day, the agency chief said though the PMLA was enacted in 2003 and came into force on July 1, 2005, it was 'largely ineffective' in the initial years with less than 200 cases per year, mostly 'restricted' to drug-related offences.
'After 2014, however, there has been a significant step-up in enforcement activity. From 2014 to 2024, 5,113 new PMLA investigations were initiated, averaging more than 500 cases per year,' Navin said.
The central probe agency was established on May 1, 1956.
It implements two criminal laws — The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA) — apart from the civil provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

ED attaches assets of Cong MLA in KOMUL recruitment ‘scam'

New Delhi: Assets worth Rs 1.32 crore of Congress MLA K Y Nanjegowda have been attached in a case related to alleged irregularities in the recruitment for the Kolar-Chikkaballapur District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd (KOMUL) in 2023, the Enforcement Directorate said on Thursday. Nanjegowda, the MLA from Malur seat in Kolar district, is the chairman of KOMUL. The ED said the recruitment process was held by KOMUL and it consisted of a written exam and interview. It was 'manipulated' in lieu of money and/or recommendation of political persons, the federal probe agency said. The recruitment committee, led by Nanjegowda along with KN Gopala Murthy (KOMUL MD), conspired with other directors in the organisation and hatched a plan which resulted into favouring of certain less meritorious candidates and deprivation of the deserving candidates, the ED alleged. A provisional order has been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to attach Rs 1.32-crore assets of Nanjegowda, it said. The ED probe began in these alleged irregularities after it conducted raids in January against Nanjegowda and some others in a different case related to 'illegal' allotment of government land worth Rs 150 crore. The agency made a reference of the alleged irregularities in KOMUL hiring to the Karnataka Lokayukta Police and also filed a complaint before the special court for trial of MP/MLA cases. The agency said it seized OMR sheets, both original and tampered, WhatsApp messages received from politicians recommending certain candidates and forwarded by Nanjegowda, and other directors to the staff of KOMUL, during the searches. It claimed 'procedural lapses' were observed in the entire recruitment process at KOMUL and also at the Mangalore University indicating efforts to hide irregularities. The agency also claimed that admission by the directors and staff of KOMUL, Mangalore University Registrar Nagendra Prasad and certain candidates who were accommodated in the examination, has unearthed a 'mega scam' in KOMUL recruitment during 2023. A sum of Rs 1,56,50,000 was generated as 'proceeds of crime' by manipulating the recruitment process both during the written exam and interview stages, in lieu of monetary benefit accepted from the candidates assuring them their selection in KOMUL, it said. Nanjegowda emerged as the 'principal architect' of the 'scam', leveraging his role as Chairman of KOMUL to control the overall recruitment, the ED said. Statements and evidence indicate that he played a 'leading' role in fixing the number of 'reserved' seats, orchestrating how bribes would be collected and directing the manipulation of written exam OMR sheets and interview scores to ensure recommended or paying candidates were selected, the agency claimed. The MLA 'illegally' enriched himself to the tune of Rs 80 lakh (out of the total proceeds of Rs 1.56 crore), the ED alleged.

CM flays Vijayendra over remarks on Congress' PM candidate

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched a scathing attack on BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra for his remarks regarding the Congress party's prime ministerial candidate. In a strongly worded statement, Siddaramaiah accused Vijayendra of arrogance, ignorance, and political immaturity. The CM questioned Vijayendra's right to advise Congress on leadership choices when, according to him, Vijayendra is unable to secure political stability within his own party. 'Someone who can't secure all four legs of the chair he sits on shouldn't be commenting on our party's national leadership,' Siddaramaiah remarked. He reminded Vijayendra of the BJP's chequered record with Dalits, backward classes, and minorities. Referencing the case of former BJP National President Bandaru Laxman, a Dalit leader who was later jailed on corruption charges, Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of using Dalit leaders for optics and later abandoning them. 'Why wasn't Draupadi Murmu made the Prime Minister if the BJP truly valued representation?' he asked. 'Why is there not a single Muslim MP in BJP's current Lok Sabha roster?' Referring to Karnataka's political history, Siddaramaiah said the BJP had repeatedly sidelined backward class leaders, notably S. Bangarappa. 'Yediyurappa finished off Bangarappa's career, and now his son Vijayendra is trying to end Kumar Bangarappa's,' he alleged. The Chief Minister then issued a challenge to Vijayendra: 'If you truly care about Dalit empowerment, relinquish your post as BJP State President and recommend a Dalit leader like Govind Karjol. If you do so, I will be the first to congratulate you.' He further accused the BJP of exploiting Dalit leaders to attack others. 'Why didn't you or your father carry the bucket placed on Chalavadi Narayanaswamy's head, instead of humiliating him?' he questioned. Siddaramaiah praised AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, calling him a self-made leader respected across the country. 'Kharge rose through service and hard work, not by flaunting his Dalit identity. He doesn't need anyone's recommendation.' Responding to speculation on Congress' prime ministerial choice, Siddaramaiah clarified, 'The Congress party will decide who its PM candidate is. BJP doesn't need to interfere.' He concluded by suggesting that with RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat hinting at Narendra Modi's retirement, BJP has a chance to make history. 'If they are sincere, let Vijayendra recommend a Dalit leader as BJP's PM candidate—be it Govind Karjol or Chalavadi Narayanaswamy. I will be the first to applaud such a move.'
