Better salaries needed to stop health workers leaving for Singapore
Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon highlighted the need for competitive remuneration to retain talent in Malaysia's public healthcare sector.
Ling noted that Singaporean hospitals have been actively recruiting Malaysian healthcare workers with significantly higher salaries, some exceeding RM300,000 annually.
He stressed that this issue is not new but requires urgent attention to prevent further brain drain.
'We must discuss with MOH to increase trainee intake and improve pay structures so that our healthcare workers feel valued,' Ling said during a press conference after the Johor State-level Nurses Day 2025 celebration.
He added that better incentives would strengthen their commitment to serving locally.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who was also present, announced an allocation of RM400,000 for the welfare of nurses in the state.
The event saw around 1,000 nurses in attendance, underscoring the importance of recognising their contributions.
The viral social media post about Singapore's high-paying offers has intensified discussions on Malaysia's need to match regional salary standards.

JOHOR BAHRU, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Johor government and the Ministry of Health (MOH) have agreed on the urgent need to fill vacancies, improve facilities and upgrade infrastructure at three major hospitals to strengthen healthcare services and support frontline workers. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said these key matters were discussed during a meeting between the state delegation and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in Putrajaya today. The discussion focused on enhancing the operations of Johor's three main hospitals, Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Hospital Sultan Ismail and Hospital Kulai. 'Both parties also agreed that Hospital Pasir Gudang and Klinik Kesihatan Cendana must be further improved with additional manpower and equipment ahead of their expected opening early next year. 'To ensure smooth implementation, a special task force will be set up to coordinate and monitor short-, medium-, and long-term action plans,' he said in a statement posted on Facebook. He also expressed his appreciation to the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, for his continued concern for the welfare and well-being of Johoreans, particularly in the area of public healthcare. The Persatuan Kebajikan Sayap Kasih Malaysia, a Malaysian NGO organisation, is now urgently seeking funds to improve a toddler's health. Shao Heng is a 5-year-old boy who has been part of the Malaysian NGO organisation family since he was just a month old in 2020. Over the past few years, the NGO has walked alongside him, through every challenge, never giving up. He was born with multiple complex medical conditions, including: - Cerebral palsy (due to an underlying genetic disorder) - Cyanotic congenital heart disease (Tetralogy of Fallot) with pulmonary atresia and collateral vessels - Severe developmental delay, along with swallowing and feeding difficulties - Despite all this, Shao Heng continues to warm every heart with his radiant smile. His strength and optimism inspire us every single day. Long-Term Feeding Tube Has Caused Complications – Surgery Urgently Needed Since birth, Shao Heng has relied on a nasogastric (NG) tube for feeding due to his inability to swallow. After five years of NG tube use, he has begun to suffer frequent fevers and has been diagnosed with multiple complications, including: Feeding difficulties , Poor nutrient absorption , Increased risk of infection Doctors now strongly recommend a Percutaneous Gastrostomy – a surgical procedure that allows him to receive nutrition directly through the stomach.
