Groom gets life in prison for raping girl, 9, on his wedding night

The Limpopo High Court in Polokwane has sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old girl during his wedding celebration in Dennilton. The man, whose name is withheld to protect the victim's identity, committed the crime on 24 December 2023. After the wedding, the bride's family, including the victim, her mother, two aunts and younger sibling, slept in a room at the bride's home. In the early hours, the groom entered their room, carried the child to an unoccupied bedroom, and raped her. The victim screamed, prompting him to flee. Her mother found her naked and immediately alerted the police. The man pleaded not guilty, but State Advocate Shirley Mawasha presented a strong case, including DNA results. A J88 medical report and damning testimony from the groom's uncle, who said the man had admitted to sexually assaulting a child and showed remorse. The judge criticised the man for betraying the trust of both families and described his actions as 'fit for movies, not real life'. The court found that the man's arrogance and lack of remorse aggravated the situation. It stressed that he should have been with his bride on his wedding night, not preying on a child. The court sentenced him to life in prison, declared him unfit to own a firearm. His name was added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders, and barred from working with children. The National Prosecuting Authority said the sentence affirms the justice system's commitment to protecting vulnerable victims and deterring gender-based violence. Double life sentence for KZN schoolgirl killer

Baphumulele Zulu (24) has been handed two life sentences by Ixopo Regional Court in KZN for murdering two schoolgirls near Creighton in Ngwagwane in 2022. Zululand Observer reports that he received another eight years for escaping lawful custody. KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says Amanda Zulu and Minenhle Buthelezi – two Grade 12 pupils – were renting a house in the area to be closer to school. 'On the evening of July 30, 2022, both complainants were attacked at the house. Following the incident, Amanda Zulu was found bleeding outside the house. She was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. 'Buthelezi's body was found further away in a ditch in a field. Both had been brutally assaulted on their heads with an unknown object. Zulu was arrested after a family member handed him over to the police.' Ramkisson-Kara says both families were confused as to the motives behind the killings, and that Zulu had not appeared remorseful. 'This sentence underscores the seriousness with which the justice system views crimes of this nature. The accused in this matter snuffed out the lives of two young women. The NPA remains resolute in our pursuit of justice on behalf of the victims of crime,' she says. March on March: Activists to rally against illegal immigration in Durban

Jacinta Zuma will be leading the march against the illegal immigrants on Friday Image: Facebook THE March on March movement is gearing towards another demonstration this Friday in Durban's CBD, as it continues to tackle the the contentious issue of illegal immigration in South Africa, head on. Organised by activist Xolani Zuma, the rally seeks to amplify the voices of local citizens who believe the growing influx of immigrants was a strain on the country's limited resources and complicating local issues, including crime rates and healthcare provision. According to Zuma, the demonstration not only advocated for prioritising citizens' needs, but also calls for the arrest and prosecution of officials allegedly complicit in allowing undocumented immigrants into the country. 'The government has very limited resources to provide healthcare for South Africans, and the increase in the number of undocumented immigrants puts more strain on the shallow public purse,' he stated. Upholding these sentiments, the March on March movement has emerged from grassroots origins, initiated on Facebook by founder Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, in response to rising concerns over illegal immigration. Next Stay Close ✕ The movement aims to address what they perceived as a deteriorating safety environment for South Africans, attributing rising crime rates, drug trafficking, and human trafficking to the growing number of undocumented immigrants. Additionally, Zuma raised alarming concerns about local law enforcement's struggles in identifying offenders, amid claims that some officials were selling identities to illegal immigrants. As tensions mounted, observers wondered how the ruling ANC would respond, particularly in light of escalating friction between the party and Ngobese-Zuma. As the movement prepared for Friday's demonstration, it also faced scrutiny from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). The Commission has openly condemned the movement's actions, particularly the involvement of volunteers asking patients for identification at KwaZulu-Natal hospitals to determine their legal status. The SAHRC insisted that access to healthcare was a universal right protected by the Constitution, warning against any attempts to deny medical care based on nationality. Ngobese-Zuma was also considering legal action against the ANC's leadership in KZN after the party failed to retract a controversial statement, where it allegedly, amongst other things accused her with calling for their "lynching". She said the ANC's remarks were misleading and damaging to her reputation. 'The statement is not only unfortunate; it is riddled with misleading statements that have the effect of eroding my good name,' she said DAILY NEWS
