As golfers, we've all been there - standing on the green, staring down a putt that could make or break our round. Bogeys, those pesky one-stroke-over-par scores, can quickly add up and derail an otherwise solid game.
But fear not, dear golfer! With the right strategies and techniques, you can minimize your bogeys and take your game to the next level.
This past week we saw Masters Champion Rory McIlroy make an eight on a par four from starting with a bad tee shot. In this segment we will look at areas I feel as golfers we can work on to avoid big scores.
Firstly, smart course management is all about making informed decisions on the course.
It's about knowing your limitations, choosing the right club, and aiming for the centre of the green. By playing smart, you can avoid taking unnecessary risks and minimize your chances of scoring a bogey.
Accurate driving is essential for avoiding bogeys. By hitting the fairway, you'll set yourself up for a much easier approach shot and reduce your chances of scoring a bogey.
To improve your driving accuracy, focus on making a smooth, balanced swing, and avoid trying to hit the ball too hard.
Strategic approach play is all about assessing the risk-reward of your shot and choosing a strategy that minimises the risk of a bogey.
This may involve aiming for the centre of the green, choosing a more conservative club, or taking a more strategic line into the pin.
Effective bunker play is essential for avoiding bogeys. By knowing how to escape from sand traps, you'll be able to save pars and minimize your chances of scoring a bogey.
To improve your bunker play, focus on making a smooth, controlled swing, and avoid trying to hit the ball too hard.
Clutch putting is all about making putts when it counts. By developing a consistent pre-shot routine, choosing the right speed, and aiming for the centre of the hole, you'll be able to make more putts and avoid scoring bogeys.
To improve your clutch putting, focus on making a smooth, controlled stroke, and avoid trying to make the putt too hard. It's also important to stay focused and avoid distractions, such as worrying about the outcome of the putt.
By incorporating these strategies into your game, you'll be well on your way to minimizing your bogeys and taking your golf game to the next level. Catch you on the fairways!

Chimaev tipped as early favourite to take UFC title from Du Plessis

Du Plessis has won 11 fights in succession, but Chimaev remains unbeaten in 14 professional bouts. Mixed martial arts fighter Dricus du Plessis will have lots of support from fans back home and across the world in his next title defence, but he will have to be at his best against an undefeated opponent who has been tipped as the early favourite. Du Plessis and Russia-born fighter Khamzat Chimaev of the UAE will meet in the cage for the first time at UFC 319, to be held in Chicago on 17 August. And the South African will be confident of retaining his middleweight belt as he looks to expand on his winning streak of 11 fights and an impressive career record which includes 21 wins and just two defeats from his 23 professional bouts. Third title defence Du Plessis first won the UFC middleweight title in January last year, against Sean Strickland, and he has since successfully defended his title against Israel Adesanya and Strickland. However, Chimaev won't be a pushover and he enters the fight with a real chance to take the belt against the more experienced champion. Ranked third in the middleweight division, Chimaev has won all 14 of his professional contests, ending nine of those fights in the first round. Khamzat Chimaev will face Dricus du Plessis next month. Picture: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP Odds on the challenger Early odds favour the challenger, with Betway offering 1.47 for Chimaev to win, though Du Plessis is also given a decent chance at 2.38, and he will be eager to prove once again that he deserves to wear the middleweight belt. There are also 10 other fights on the UFC 319 card which give punters additional options to make some cash. These Betway odds are correct at time of publishing and are subject to change.

England and Spain odds on for repeat of World Cup final

Italy and Germany are the outsiders in the semifinals of the Women's Euros. Spain's Alexia Putellas has been in superb form at this year's Euros. Picture: Fabrice COFFRINI / AFP The 2025 Women's European Championships has reached its semifinal stage, with reigning champions England still in the hunt after somehow coming through a thrilling quarterfinal with Sweden. England were 2-0 down, and looked on their way out of the competition, but two late goals and a frankly ridiculous penalty shootout victory saw them set up a semifinal on Tuesday against Italy. England head coach Sarina Wiegman made the most of the depth in her squad, bringing Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang off the bench against Sweden. Kelly was inspirational, creating a goal for Lucy Bronze with a superb cross, assisting the second goal too, and firing home a penalty in the shootout. Arsenal's 19 year-old striker Agyemang, meanwhile, pounced to score the vital equaliser to make it 2-2. England are clear favourites to beat Italy in the last four, priced at 1.47 by Betway at the time of writing, with Italy at 5.60 and a draw at 4.20. The Lionesses, however will surely have to perform better than they did against Sweden, as they take on an Italy side that took down Norway in the quarterfinals. Juventus striker Christina Girelli got both goals for Italy against Norway in their 2-1 win, including a last minute winner to send Le Azzure through. Girelli also scored against Portugal in the group stages, and has three of the five goals Italy have scored in the tournament so far. Italy's achievement in reaching the semifinals, just three years after their players were allowed to play professionally in their own country, is remarkable in itself. England, however should have too much quality for them on Tuesday. In the other semifinal on Wednesday, two titans of Women's European football meet as Germany take on Spain. Spain are the reigning world champions, and have swept all before them so far at these Euros. Monserrat Tome's side have scored 19 goals in five matches. Gotham FC's Esther Gonzalez tops the tournament's scoring charts with four goals. Spain and Barcelona star Alexia Putellas is having another fantastic tournament, with three goals and four assists already. With this in mind, it is no surprise Spain are favourites to beat Germany, priced at 1.50 with Germany at 5.20 and a draw at 4.20. Please not that all Betway odds were correct at the time of writing and are subject to change.

Mamelodi Sundowns squad valuation: Ronwen Williams not among top 10 most valuable players

Mamelodi Sundowns, one of Africa's wealthiest football clubs, boasts a squad valued at R744 million, with Lucas Ribeiro leading at R51.54 million, while star keeper Ronwen Williams is not among the top 10, and the team recently earned R228 million from the FIFA Club World Cup. Picture: Federico Parra/AFP It's no secret that Mamelodi Sundowns are one of the richest football clubs on the continent, but their actual squad value makes for some interesting reading. For example, valued at R18.55 million according to star goalkeeper Ronwen Williams doesn't crack the top-15 most valuable players in the Sundowns squad. Top of the list in terms of market value is striker Lucas Ribeiro. The Brazilian is apparently worth a whopping R51.54 million. Cape Town-born Iqraam Rayners comes in at number two with a market value of R49.48 million. The 29-year-old forward, however, is the most valuable South African in the star-studded Sundowns lineup.
