FM Nirmala Sitharaman reviews banking sector's operational and cybersecurity preparedness amid rising tensions with Pakistan

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday chaired a high level meeting with the Managing Directors and CEOs of Public and Private Sector Banks and insurance companies amidst emerging security concerns arising from tensions at the border to review baking sector's operational and cyber security preparedness, including digital applications such as net banking and UPI, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.In the meeting, Sitharaman asked directed all banks to remain fully alert and be prepared to deal with in case with an eventuality or crisis, ensuring uninterrupted banking services.She also directed banks to conduct regular audits of their cybersecurity systems and data centres and ensure that all digital and core banking infrastructure is fully firewalled and monitored round the clock to prevent breaches or any hostile cyber activity.The Finance Minister instructed banks to designate two dedicated senior officials identified at the headquarters, one for reporting all cyber-related matters and the other to ensure operational matters, including the functioning of bank branches and the availability of cash in ATMs. Both dedicated officers should report any incident to CERT-In / relevant agencies and DFS on a real-time basis.In this regard, banks were also asked to coordinate in real time with the Reserve Bank of India , CERT-In and relevant Government agencies to ensure robust and agile information exchange and response.Further, the Finance Minister also asked the banks to ensure the safety of employees and their families working at branches in border areas.She also ordered insurance companies to give timely settlements along with uninterrupted services.The Managing Directors and CEOs of all the banks and insurance companies apprised the Union Finance Minister about the measures they are undertaking, given the ongoing tensions at the border.Bank MDs & CEOs informed that cybersecurity measures have been reinforced throughout the banking system. Anti-DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) systems have been implemented by banks to protect against massive cyber-attacks. To guarantee institutional readiness, mock drills have been held encompassing cybersecurity and disaster recovery scenarios at the highest levels. They apprised that phishing attempts are being actively watched, and staff members have received several internal alerts to increase awareness.Bank officials stated that their Security Operations Centre (SOC) and Network Operations Centres are fully operational and on high alert. These centres are coordinating closely with CERT-In and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), facilitating real-time data sharing and threat monitoring.

Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 6 (ANI): Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held separate bilateral meetings with her counterparts from Russia, Brazil and China during the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting in Rio de Janeiro. In her meeting with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, Sitharaman reaffirmed the 'long-standing' partnership between India and Russia. She also thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his unwavering support after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Sitharaman said that both countries enjoy 'exemplary levels of mutual trust and understanding,' and underlined the strength of the 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership'. The two ministers discussed bilateral financial cooperation, developments at the New Development Bank (NDB), and new initiatives under the BRICS framework. She also congratulated Russia for successfully chairing BRICS in 2024 and said that India remains committed to boosting South-South cooperation through the platform. 'The two sides also discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, including cooperation in the financial sector, along with matters related to NDB,' the Ministry of Finance said in a post on X. Sitharaman also met Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Haddad. During the meeting, both sides shared views on raising the voice of the Global South, climate finance before COP30 and working together at global platforms such as the UN, G20, WTO, BRICS and IBSA. 'The two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, including South-South cooperation, amplifying the voice of the Global South, COP30 and climate finance issues, and engagement in regional and global forums such as the United Nations, G20, BRICS, WTO and IBSA,' the Finance Ministry in its post said. She praised Brazil's leadership of BRICS, especially its efforts to build a 'multipolar world order' and expand the grouping. She said India would support Brazil's priorities and would focus on practical cooperation when it takes over the BRICS Chairship in January 2026. Sitharaman also spoke about the strategic importance of India-Brazil ties and their growing collaboration in different sectors. 'India and Brazil, as strategic partners, share warm and cordial ties spanning across multiple sectors, and are cooperating closely in multiple sectors to further strengthen the strategic partnership,' the Finance Ministry quoting Sitharaman said. Earlier, Sitharaman met China's Finance Minister Lan Fo'an. She recalled meeting him earlier in Samarkand during the AIIB Annual Meetings in September 2024. Sitharaman said that India and China are among the 'world's largest and fastest-growing economies' and can play a major role in pushing 'inclusive' global growth and innovation. She referred to their civilisational ties and growing economic power and said both countries must work more closely to represent the Global South and help shape global debates. 'Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted that India and China can strengthen collaboration across a wide range of areas due to the common rich human capital, deep civilizational ties, and expanding economic influence,' the Finance Ministry said in its X post, adding,' The Union Finance Minister suggested that deeper engagement between the two countries can help to amplify the voice of developing economies, and shape global narratives that reflect the priorities and aspirations of the Global South.'(ANI)

HYDERABAD: Cyberabad police have registered two cyber fraud cases after a Kondapur family alleged that sham stock trading platforms siphoned off nearly 2.73 crore from a 73-year-old retired employee. According to the first information reports (FIRs), the victim had joined a WhatsApp (WA) group operated by the fraudsters with the name of a known stock trading platform on Dec 23, 2024. They later floated an invite-only VIP group, insisting on big deposits. Investigators said ordinary trading access was gradually curtailed, forcing the investor to borrow and transfer fresh amounts in a bid to qualify. By June 21, 2025, he had pumped in 2.07 crore, with the overall amount in his virtual account showing over 3 crore. The operators then demanded another 17 lakh as profit share, yet blocked every withdrawal request and never issued account statements. The sequence began on April 28, 2025 when the retiree enrolled with an entity posing as a Sebi-registered broker. Over the next two months, representatives demanded repeated payments, culminating in a 16 lakh tax call and an additional 15 lakh fee citing a low credit score. After deposits worth 65.03 lakh were made through multiple bank accounts and UPI IDs, the platform stalled payouts.
