EU proposes 90% climate emission cuts by 2040, with flexibility
The long-delayed target is a key milestone on the path to the European Union's 2050 carbon neutrality goal. To sway skeptical capitals, the EU executive proposes that from 2036, the bloc's 27 countries can count carbon credits purchased to finance projects outside Europe for up to three percent of their emission cuts.

Macron says wants EU-US trade deal 'as soon as possible'
France's President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday he wanted an EU-U.S. trade deal "as soon as possible, with the lowest tariffs possible," as a Washington-set deadline looms to reach an accord. "The right deal for me is the deal that is struck as soon as possible, with the lowest tariffs possible, and that must be fair and firm," Macron said. The EU Commission has until Wednesday next week to strike an agreement or see President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs snap back. AFP

Trump and Zelenskiy to discuss pause of US arms deliveries in call: Report
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy are expected to discuss the abrupt halt in some key U.S. weapons deliveries to Kyiv in a call on Friday, the Financial Times reported on Thursday. Zelenskiy would also raise potential future arms sales, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the planning. The timing of the call could change, the newspaper added. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. The White House did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The U.S. has paused some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine due to low stockpiles, sources earlier told Reuters. That decision led to Ukraine calling in the acting U.S. envoy to Kyiv on Wednesday to underline the importance of military aid from Washington continuing, and caution that the move would weaken Ukraine's ability to defend against intensifying Russian airstrikes and battlefield advances. The Pentagon's move led in part to a cut in deliveries of Patriot air defense missiles that Ukraine relies on to destroy fast-moving ballistic missiles, Reuters reported on Wednesday. Reuters

The EU is "ready for a deal" with the United States, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday before negotiators met in Washington ahead of a July 9 deadline. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic is currently in Washington and due to meet his U.S. counterparts later on Thursday. "We want a negotiated solution, but you all know that at the same time, we're preparing for the possibility that no satisfactory agreement is reached," von der Leyen told reporters in Aarhus, Denmark.
