CAIRO – 20 June 2025 – Amid ongoing military escalation in the region between Iran and Israel, all Egyptian pilgrims who traveled through tourism companies for Hajj have safely returned home from Saudi Arabia within a single week.
Samia Sami, Assistant Minister for Tourism Companies and Head of the Official Egyptian Hajj Tourist Mission, stated that the pilgrimage concluded in record time due to the regional situation.
A total of 80 tourist buses, carrying approximately 7,500 pilgrims, departed smoothly from Mecca and Medina and traveled via the Halat Ammar land crossing on the Saudi-Jordanian border, continuing through the Jordanian port of Aqaba and arriving at Egypt's Nuweiba port.
Sami noted that the Central Emergency Operations Room—established by the Hajj mission under ministerial directives—closely monitored all bus movements from Saudi Arabia to Egypt. This was done in full coordination with Saudi, Jordanian, and Egyptian authorities to ensure a safe and organized return.
She emphasized that the success of this expedited operation was made possible through continuous coordination between all relevant agencies across the three countries. As a result, the entire overland pilgrimage concluded without significant delays or congestion.
Sami expressed her deep appreciation to the authorities and agencies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and the Arab Republic of Egypt. She also extended gratitude to the Chamber of Travel and Tourism Companies and Agencies, and to the tourism companies responsible for organizing this year's overland Hajj trips, for their swift response and effective collaboration with the mission.
Regarding pilgrims returning via air travel, Sami confirmed that arrangements are ongoing to facilitate their return on scheduled flights. The final groups are expected to arrive within the coming days, with continued efforts to ensure their comfort and safety throughout the process.

Sisi orders continued airport development under int'l partnerships
NEW ALAMEIN CITY, Egypt, June 28 (MENA) – President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has directed that the development of Egyptian airports continue through international partnerships grounded in efficiency and sustainability, alongside encouraging private sector involvement. The steps are part of Egypt Vision 2030, aiming to transform airports into advanced regional hubs operating under the latest global systems, while also providing an attractive investment climate that ensures economic viability and sustainable development, Presidential Spokesman Mohamed al-Shennawy said in a statement Saturday following Sisi's meeting in Alamein with Civil Aviation Minister Sameh el Hafny and Chairperson of EgyptAir In-Flight Services Soheir Abdallah. The meeting reviewed the comprehensive strategic vision to advance the civil aviation sector, covering air navigation, fleet expansion, airport upgrades, and human resource development in support of Egypt's target to raise annual tourist arrivals to 30 million. The President was also briefed on the 'New Republic Air Gate' at Terminal 4 of Cairo International Airport, including the technical and operational specifications of the project, which will establish a new passenger terminal under the highest global standards, with a capacity of at least 30 million passengers, raising the airport's overall capacity to over 60 million annually. The project will fully comply with safety, security, and environmental sustainability standards. The minister further outlined the national strategy, developed with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as the ministry's strategic advisor, to involve the private sector in operating and developing airports. The plan aims to be finalized by summer 2025 and seeks to enhance the civil aviation sector's efficiency, improve passenger services, and attract private investments and advanced operational expertise to develop 11 key airports, while fully maintaining public ownership of these strategic assets. Sisi instructed moving ahead with modern airport development approaches and to offer Hurghada Airport for private sector partnership by the end of 2025. The spokesman added the meeting also covered Egypt's air navigation sector, highlighting international praise for the country's air traffic management amid recent regional crises and neighboring airspace closures, which increased traffic over Egypt to more than 1,600 aircraft daily. Organizations such as Eurocontrol, ICAO, and IATA commended Egyptian air traffic controllers for managing the surge efficiently without compromising safety or operational discipline. The talks also tackled plans to restructure Egypt's airspace and upgrade radar and communication systems. The session further touched on EgyptAir's recent progress, including winning, for the first time, the Skytrax award for 'Best Airline Staff in Africa' for 2025 during the Paris Air Show. The airline also earned awards for best economy class meals, fastest-growing airline in Africa (for the second year running), and best cabin crew on the continent. The minister noted EgyptAir advanced 20 places from last year, ranking 68th among the world's top 100 airlines out of over 325 carriers, and outlined the airline's plan to grow its fleet to 97 aircraft by 2028/2029 to boost competitiveness and enhance passenger experience. Additionally, he reviewed efforts to upgrade EgyptAir In-Flight Services by improving infrastructure and equipment, training staff, modernizing ground services, elevating international service standards, and upgrading business lounges to meet the highest levels of comfort and service. The company is also working to improve its on-time performance. (MENA)

El-Sisi directs involving private sector in Hurghada Airport development by year-end - Urban & Transport
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi directed on Saturday that Hurghada International Airport be offered for private sector partnership by the end of 2025, signaling a push for modern development methods across the nation's aviation infrastructure. The president's directive came during a meeting in Alamein City with Civil Aviation Minister Sameh ElHefny and EgyptAir In-Flight Services Chairperson Soheir Abdullah, according to a presidential statement. The move is part of a broader strategy to involve international partnerships and private investment in developing Egyptian airports for efficiency and sustainability. This aligns with Egypt's Vision 2030, which aims to transform airports into advanced regional hubs that operate with the latest global operational systems and an attractive investment environment. During a recent interview with Ahram Online, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which serves as the technical advisor for this initiative, emphasized the importance of launching tenders for the first of 11 airports, including Hurghada, by the end of 2025. IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop noted that this portfolio approach is designed to attract investment, mitigate transactional risks, and showcase Egypt's broader monetization strategy as both viable and scalable. Cairo Int'l Airport A core component of this strategy is the New Republic Air Gateway project at Cairo International Airport's Terminal 4. During the meeting, Minister ElHefny presented technical specifications for this new passenger terminal, designed to handle at least 30 million passengers. This expansion is expected to effectively double Cairo Airport's total annual capacity to over 60 million passengers, while maintaining stringent safety, security, and environmental standards. According to Diop, Cairo and the other targeted airports are critical gateways for Egypt's tourism, trade, and regional connectivity. He highlighted that modernizing infrastructure — from terminals to baggage systems — alongside expanding passenger capacity and implementing advanced technologies, such as automated check-ins, will directly support Egypt's economic recovery and global competitiveness. The civil aviation sector's comprehensive plan, reviewed during the meeting, includes significant upgrades to airport infrastructure, development of the aircraft fleet, enhancement of air navigation, and improvements in human resource capabilities. These efforts are geared towards boosting Egypt's tourism sector, with a national goal of attracting 30 million visitors annually. In the first quarter of 2025, arrivals reached 3.9 million, representing a 25 percent year-over-year increase. In 2024, 15.7 million tourists visited Egypt, an unprecedented number in the history of Egyptian tourism, marking a 6 percent increase over 2023. Private sector integration, int'l recognition ElHefny also detailed a national strategy, developed in collaboration with the IFC, to integrate the private sector into airport operations and development. This strategy, expected to be finalized by the end of summer 2025, seeks to enhance performance, improve operational efficiency, and elevate traveler service quality. Additionally, it aims to attract private investment and advanced operational expertise for 11 major airports, with the critical caveat that ownership of these vital assets will remain in public hands. "These airports are strategically located to serve both tourism hotspots like Luxor, Aswan, and Sharm El-Sheikh, as well as commercial hubs," Diop told Ahram Online. He explained that IFC will provide not only financing, but also technical and regulatory support to create a more investment-friendly climate and encourage global airport operators to engage through public-private partnerships. Airspace and traffic management Egyptian air traffic controllers have received international commendation for their efficient management of increased air traffic amid recent regional crises. Despite airspace closures in neighboring countries, Daily flights over Egyptian airspace surged to more than 1,600. International organizations, including Eurocontrol, ICAO, and IATA, have also praised their high performance, noting that safety and operational discipline were maintained. The meeting also discussed plans to restructure Egyptian airspace and upgrade radar and communication technologies. EgyptAir's significant achievements The meeting also highlighted EgyptAir's significant recent achievements. For the first time, the airline received the Best Airline Staff in Africa award for 2025 from global rating agency Skytrax at the Paris Air Show. EgyptAir also secured the awards for Best Cabin Crew in Africa and Best Economy Class Meals. Moreover, it was named Most Improved Airline in Africa for the second consecutive year. The minister also noted that EgyptAir has climbed 20 places to rank 68th globally among over 325 carriers. Discussions also covered EgyptAir's fleet renewal plan, which aims to reach 97 aircraft by 2028/2029, boosting its competitiveness and enhancing the travel experience. The meeting also reviewed efforts to upgrade EgyptAir's In-Flight Services, including infrastructure, equipment, staff training, ground services, and business class lounges, to ensure the highest comfort and service standards.
