Finnish Samis urge stronger voice in EU decision-making

HELSINKI, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Representatives of the Finnish Sami community called for stronger Indigenous participation in European Union (EU) policymaking at the EU Arctic Forum held Friday in Kittila, northern Finland. Tuomas Aslak Juuso, vice president of the Sami Parliament in Finland, emphasized that EU policies significantly influence the daily lives of the Samis - from climate adaptation to cross-border trade - yet the Sami people currently lack a direct mechanism to shape those policies. He noted that while the EU formally recognized the special status of the Samis in Finland's EU accession treaty, a legal foundation that protects Indigenous rights such as reindeer herding, recent initiatives like the European Green Deal have frequently failed to reflect the needs of Indigenous communities. The Samis have long advocated for permanent parliamentary representation in Brussels and a formal partnership between the Sami Parliamentary Council (SPC) and the European Parliament. However, Juuso pointed out that the EU still lacks an internal policy on Indigenous peoples. He further urged the creation of dedicated EU funding mechanisms to support Sami adaptation and strengthen community resilience. Such funds, he argued, should directly address the impacts of climate change on traditional livelihoods like reindeer herding, fishing, and handicrafts. Also speaking at the forum, former Finnish President Tarja Halonen highlighted the importance of protecting Indigenous rights and ensuring their active role in shaping EU policies. "The cultural heritage and knowledge of Indigenous peoples are essential to the resilience of ecosystems - both in the Arctic and globally," Halonen said. She warned that despite contributing the least to environmental degradation, Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by climate change, land degradation, and biodiversity loss, particularly in the rapidly warming Arctic region. The Samis are the only recognized Indigenous people within the EU, with their traditional homeland spanning the northern regions of Finland, Norway, Sweden, and parts of Russia. The EU Arctic Forum runs from June 26 to 27, with side events scheduled on June 25 and 28.

Arak summer cup cocktails

My friend Sami makes the most amazing Massaya wine in the Bekaa Valley, just above Beirut. He also distills his own arak using obeidi grapes and organic aniseed – it's a seriously good drop. It's perfect as a base for a refreshing summer cocktail like this one, or just as a breezy aperitif on its own. If you don't have arak to hand, don't worry – sambuca, ouzo or pastis will do the trick just as well. Ingredients 150g mixture of raspberries, strawberries and blueberries (you can use just two types of berries if you like), plus extra to serve a couple of handfuls of garden herbs such as mint, lemon verbena, lemon balm, basil etc, plus extra to serve 80g granulated sugar 4 measures (either a single shot or double shot, as you prefer) of arak (sambuca, ouzo or pastis would also work) ice, for serving 300ml kombucha Method Step Hull the strawberries and cut any large ones into quarters and combine with the remainder of the 150g berries (raspberries and blueberries) as well as a couple of handfuls of garden herbs in a large jug or bowl. Step Bring 300ml water to the boil and add 80g granulated sugar. Stir then simmer for about 1 minute until it dissolves. Leave to cool for about 5 minutes. Step Pour the sugar syrup over the jug/bowl of fruit and herbs. Step Leave to infuse until it cools completely to room temperature, stirring now and then. Step To serve, add 4 single or double shots of arak (or your spirit of choice) to the jug of infused syrup and berries. Gently muddle it all together. Step Half fill four tall glasses with ice then pour in the arak fruit infusion. Stir well.

Sami Sheen Wants Breast Implants Removed Due To Health Concerns

In November 2023, Sami Sheen — the then-19-year-old daughter of Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards — gained attention for documenting the process of her breast augmentation, a procedure she previously said she'd been wanting to have since she was 10 years old. Since then, Sami has talked super openly about her boob job and the other cosmetic procedures she's had, including lip filler, a nose job, and veneers. In fact, as recently as April this year, she said that she 'should have gone bigger' with her boobs. 'The surgeon talked me down in size,' she said on Gia Giudice's podcast. Well, only a couple of months later, and it sounds like Sami has had a serious change of heart. On Monday, the 21-year-old OnlyFans model posted a string of Instagram stories sharing that she plans to get her breast implants removed due to health concerns. 'I've been experiencing health issues for nearly 2 years now with the weirdest symptoms and finally discovered that I have breast implant illness,' she wrote in the first post, asking fans to share 'any good explant surgeons near LA.' 'Idk how I haven't figured this out sooner but i'm so glad to finally have an answer. I'm hoping to get them removed ASAP so I can start feeling better,' she added. For context, breast implant illness (BII) refers to the wide range of symptoms that can sometimes occur after getting a boob job, including, joint pain, fatigue, memory loss, and muscle weakness. Researchers are unsure exactly what causes BII, and it isn't currently recognized as an official medical diagnosis; however, this could eventually change. Responding to a fan, Sami listed a range of health complications she's experienced, including headaches, vertigo, severe anxiety, and skin rashes. 'These symptoms started almost immediately after getting [a boob job,]' she said of the lengthy list. 'And now I experience nearly all of these symptoms every single day.' Hair loss is also cited as a possible symptom among those experiencing BII, and Sami highlighted this as a difficult aspect of her ordeal. Despite having wanted a boob job since she was young, Sami told her followers that she wished she'd done 'more research before getting them done.' 'Not everyone who gets implants will get sick from them,' she wrote. 'I think I just got super unlucky, but I'm also very grateful that I am fortunate enough to get them removed. I feel awful for all the women that experience this and are stuck with them, cause this illness is no joke.' She concluded: 'A part of me is honestly glad I need them removed cause these things are a pain in the ass to deal with. Not worth it at all, but you live and you learn.' Sami Sheen to have breast implants removed

Sami Sheen is having her breast implants removed because she believes they are making her sick. The Only Fans model underwent enlargement surgery in 2022 but she is on the hunt for a surgeon to reverse the procedure after battling with the "weirdest symptoms" for the last few years. She wrote on her Instagram Story: "I've been experiencing health issues for nearly 2 years now with the weirdest symptoms and finally discovered that I have breast implant illness. "Idk how I haven't figured this out sooner but i'm so glad to finally have an answer. I'm hoping to get them removed ASAP so I can start feeling better. Pls lmk if you know of any good explant surgeons near LA.(sic)" The 21-year-old model - who is the daughter of Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen - admitted she will find it "physically and mentally hard" to go back to her old body shape but ultimately thinks it is the right thing to do for her health. Alongside a photo of herself in a bikini pre-surgery, she wrote: "It's definitely going to be hard going back to this size, not only physically but mentally. I don't want to at all but I know i'll feel so much better once they are out, so I guess it's worth it." Breat Implant Illness (BII) isn't recognised as an official condition, but symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, joint and muscle pains, weight fluctuations, depression, anxiety and hair loss, and Sami has been struggling with allergies, vertigo, rashes, mood swings, dry eyes, acne, headaches and temperature sensitivities. She added: "BII often mimics certain autoimmune diseases, but I'm certain it's my implants because these symptoms started almost immediately after getting them done. "I think I just got super unlucky, but I'm also very grateful that I am fortunate enough to get them removed. I feel awful for all the women that experience this and are stuck with them, cause this illness is no joke. "These things are a pain in the ass to deal with. Not worth it at all, but you live and you learn." In April, Sami admitted she was keen to have her breast size boosted further. She said in a TikTok video: "When the time comes to get them redone, I'm definitely going bigger, and I think I'm going to go over the muscle so they look a little more natural."

Christopher Eccleston has been filming in Newport

While residents of Newport may see a film crew swarming landmarks in Newport and immediately think of Doctor Who, this production is entirely different. Welsh production company Hello Deer are currently filming in John Frost Square Newport Central Library, producing a new feature film titled 'About a Bell'. 'About a Bell' is an independent film about Sami, a Syrian refugee, and Bryony, a young librarian, who embark on a highly personal quest to preserve a bell from a demolished church. Listings on IMDB detail that Sami is played by comedian Omid Djalili, and Bryony will be played by Eleanor Worthington-Cox. This main duo will be joined by some giants of British acting including Doctor Who star and Emmy Award Winner Christopher Eccleston, Jonathan Rhodes and Scot Williams. Though the public may not be allowed into the library today, it would be safe to assume that it has been entirely taken over by cameras and crew. This stellar cast will be directed by BAFTA nominee and star of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' Simon Callow, who is making his first foray into directing since the 1990s. Unlike most other film crews this one is very small and only employs around 40 people, but staff on set feel that this is the best way to operate. Location assistant Matthew Marais, 25, said: 'I think they want to film in Newport as it's a city that's been developed. 'These independent films are the best kind of jobs because everyone cares so much more. If its someone's passion project, like this, then everybody wants to try harder to bring it to life.' Rehearsals for the film began last week in Newport, inside the company's production office on the other side of the river from today's filming location. In a cryptic post on Instagram, viewers were shown two of Newport's infamous bridges that any dedicated resident would recognise. Filming will take place around Newport and Cardiff, before the production moves to Belgium to complete filming in a few weeks. The production itself is set in Newport, so residents are sure to see parts of the much-loved city they call home throughout the film when it is released. There is no release date announced for the production yet.
