Carlisle United set for final pre-season test at Chester
Carlisle United No2 Frankie McAvoy says the Blues will weigh up carefully how to approach their final friendly at Chester today. The Cumbrians head to the Deva Stadium (3pm) for their last pre-season outing ahead of the new National League season. The game comes a week before the 2025/26 curtain-raiser at Woking. And Mark Hughes' first-team coach McAvoy says it will be approached very much with that opening league fixture in mind. 'It's the last one, and we're looking again to see how the squad's starting to take shape, with a view to Woking the following Saturday,' McAvoy said. 'After the two games we've had when players have had 90 minutes, at Harrogate at Curzon Ashton, we'll sit with the manager and we'll decide how we're going to tackle the game, with a view to being aware that we've got Woking coming up shortly after that.' McAvoy earlier this week said Gabe Breeze was being assessed after returning to the club following illness. Other injured players could again miss out, while Hughes could again involve Bevis Mugabi in the squad after the defender's 45-minute outing at Curzon Ashton. A decision on the future of trialist midfielder Jed Abbey is also pending. The game against Calum McIntyre's side will be the fourth encounter with National League North opposition this pre-season. Chester narrowly missed out on promotion last term, losing to Scunthorpe United in the play-off final. Their side today could include former Carlisle striker Offrande Zanzala, who joined the Seals this summer. He scored in Chester's latest friendly, a 1-1 draw at Glentoran last Saturday. 'I think every test that we've had in pre-season has been a good test for us and I expect nothing less [from Chester]. 'They were a bit unfortunate that they didn't get promoted. So it's going to be a good test for us.' Blackburn Rovers told what to expect from 'powerhouse' Lewis Miller
What type of player is Lewis Miller? What are his strengths and weaknesses? He's a powerhouse, first and foremost. He was originally signed as a 21-year-old right-back from A-League side Macarthur FC, and gradually established himself in the first team under the last two managers. Last season, injury to other centre-backs prompted David Gray to move him into Hibs' back three, as part of a 3-4-1-2 formation. He has the attributes to play both as a full-back/wing-back and as a centre back. Miller is quick and strong, likes to get forward, and has proven an occasional goal threat. As a centre-back, he can draw on his full-back experience to offer something a little different - namely being comfortable stepping into advanced areas with the ball, underlapping the full-backs or defending out wide. His aggressiveness and recovery pace were key to Hibs' system. He still has plenty of development to go, however. Concentration was an issue at times, although this improved last season. He can be a little erratic in possession, and has been prone to being caught on the ball in dangerous areas. Under a good coaching team last season, however, he made significant strides, and Gray described him as 'very coachable'. What is the Hibs fans' view on losing him? I suspect he might be one of those players whose true value only becomes apparent after they've gone. Miller has split opinion, albeit I'd say the verdict on him by the end of last season was majority positive. Most supporters probably recognise that given his contract situation, this is the right time to sell. But I think it will become apparent that, despite his inconsistency, Miller's mix of attributes will be difficult to replace, and even his current doubters will soften on him. Has there been a lot of interest in him this summer? Yes, I believe that as well as Blackburn, Charlton Athletic were also interested. His physical profile, potential for development, and contract situation will have alerted plenty of clubs. Do you think a fee of around £1m is fair? Does it represent value for either club? I think so. Hibs are making a significant profit on a player who they could have lost for nothing in June were it not for the one-year extension option in his contract. Given he would have been free to sign a pre-contract elsewhere in January, I feel the club will be happy to agree a seven-figure package. Do you think he'll adapt to the physicality and intensity of the Championship? Yes. Miller's game is based on his pace and power, so I'd be surprised if he struggled with that side of the game. The Scottish Premiership has its own unique physical demands, and I've seen players coming in the opposite direction from the Championship struggle with it. Miller has other areas to improve on, but he should be able to handle himself physically. What is his character like from your dealings with him? He's not short on confidence. Some players shrink a little when they come to speak to the press but Miller had a laidback demeanour and was always happy to chat at length about anything he was asked. You can see that confidence on the pitch, too. He was never afraid of a confrontation or some back and forth with opponents.

Brothers launch new fun football club for city youngsters
Two Newport brothers are launching a new football school in the city which aims to put the fun back into the sport for primary school children. The Fun Footy Club, which will kick off in September, is the brainchild of brothers James and Joe Ward, who are former Newport County AFC Academy players and who both now work in education. Primary school teacher James, 31, who lives and works in Prague, Czechia, is the CEO and founder. His brother Joe, 28, who is wellbeing, learning and engagement officer at St Joseph's RC High School and a former EFL scholar (apprentice professional) at Newport County AFC. He is the head coach of the new club and other former Newport County Academy players will also be joining him on the coaching staff. The club will hold twice-weekly sessions at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales in the Newport International Sports Village. James, who alongside his teaching career owns and runs the Prague Soccer School, said: 'We see football differently. We believe that children should learn to play football in a pressure-free and fun-filled environment. 'Academies and football clubs have for too long taken children's football far too seriously. 'We focus on giving children the most enjoyable experience, improving the chances of long-term participation in sport and skill development. We want to help children to play, improve and, most importantly, to love football.' Joe said: 'We love to have parents staying and enjoying the sessions. However, we do ask that parents do not give instructions to children during sessions.' The Fun Footy Club starts on Tuesday, September 2, with a session for children aged four to six (Little Kickers) from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and another for those aged seven to 10 (Young Ballers) from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
