MCE Welcomes Moves by Several Countries to Recognize State of Palestine
The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, welcomed recent announcements by a number of countries — including Malta, Canada, Australia, Andorra, Finland, Iceland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Portugal, and San Marino — expressing their intent to recognize the State of Palestine.
The Council described the move as a 'historic and significant step' toward achieving justice for the Palestinian people and ending decades of suffering. It praised the growing international momentum in support of Palestinian rights and aspirations.
In its statement, the Council renewed its call for the international community to take immediate action to halt the ongoing aggression in Gaza, protect civilians, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. It also urged an end to forced displacement and starvation policies targeting Palestinians, reaffirming the people's legitimate right to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Turkish Envoy Hosts Solidarity Event for Palestine in Cairo
By Ahmad El-Assasy Turkish Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, hosted a solidarity event at his residence, bringing together over 300 Palestinian and 100 Egyptian guests. The gathering was held in cooperation with the Palestinian Embassy, IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, and the Vefa Association, underscoring Turkey's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. Ambassador Şen emphasized that the event reflects the commitment of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the compassion of the Turkish people. 'We deeply appreciate Egypt's leading role in advocating for a ceasefire, delivering humanitarian aid, and supporting a two-state solution,' he said. 'Turkey stands side by side with Egypt, offering constructive support.' During the event, Ambassador Şen delivered an optimistic message regarding the future of Palestine, stating that 'Palestine will undoubtedly achieve its independence and freedom.' He also shared two pledges made by Palestinian youth attending the event: To remain rooted in Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem, and all Palestinian lands, and to hold fast to hope. Syria Begins Receiving Gas from Azerbaijan via Turkey
Taarek Refaat The first deliveries of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria through Turkish territory began Saturday, marking the launch of a regional energy corridor linking the three countries. The inauguration ceremony for the new gas transmission line was attended by Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov, and representatives from the Qatar Fund for Development, which is providing financial support for the project. Minister Al-Bashir hailed the new regional pipeline as a strategic step toward strengthening Syria's energy security. He said the project would directly improve electricity generation capacity, extend daily operating hours for power plants, and contribute to economic recovery and better living conditions, supporting efforts to bring displaced Syrians back to their communities. Under the first phase of the agreement, Syria will receive about 3.4 million cubic meters of gas per day, enabling the production of an additional 750 megawatts of electricity. This, Al-Bashir said, would add roughly four extra hours of electricity supply per day, fueling industrial growth and stimulating the broader economy. The gas deliveries are being facilitated under a trilateral cooperation framework supported by Qatar. Youssef Al-Youssef, director of the Syrian Gas Company, said the initial pumping began from the Harjalah border station north of Aleppo to the city's thermal power plant. Initial flows amount to 745,000 cubic meters per day and will be ramped up over the coming week to the full 3.4 million cubic meters. The supply will be distributed among the Aleppo thermal plant and gas-fired power stations in other provinces. The pipeline route runs from Harjalah through the Tounian plant, then to the Al-Biyarat area in Palmyra, where it branches to feed the Jandal and Tishreen power stations. Once fully operational, the gas is expected to generate between 750 and 800 megawatt-hours of electricity daily, strengthening the stability of Syria's national grid. While the infrastructure can currently handle the planned volumes, further upgrades will be needed if supply increases in the future. According to Turkey's Energy Minister, electricity exports to Syria are currently conducted through eight connection points. Plans are underway to increase this capacity by 25% initially, eventually more than doubling it. ICESCO Launches Second Edition of Its Poetry Contest 'Cities of Poems'
Mohamed Mandour The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) announces the launch of the second edition of the annual poetry award 'Cities of Poems,' dedicated this year to the city of Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan, in celebration of its designation as a 2025 Culture Capital in the Islamic World. The annual contest, which coincides with ICESCO's announcement of the Culture Capital in the Islamic World, aims to revive and strengthen the age-old connection between poetry and place: an enduring relationship that has inspired many immortal works in Arabic and global poetry. It also seeks to document, through poetic and aesthetic expression, the history and geography of cities, and to honor the figures and civilizations celebrated by the Capitals of Culture in the Islamic World through poetry. Poetic submissions, in either Arabic or Uzbek, will be accepted starting 1st August 2025, and ending on Wednesday, 31st December 2025. A panel of experts from ICESCO, together with a host of distinguished poets, will evaluate the submitted poems to select three winners. The first-place winner will receive a USD 3,000 cash prize; the second-place winner will receive USD 2,000; and the third-place winner will receive USD 1,000. In addition, all winners will be awarded certificates of appreciation.
