Build ‘Viksit Gaon' to achieve Viksit Bharat goal by 2047: Minister

Hans India2 days ago
Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, on Monday called for a renewed push to transform villages into 'Viksit Gaon' (developed villages), as a necessary step towards achieving the goal of a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India) by 2047.
Speaking at the first meeting of the performance review committee of the Ministry of Rural Development here, Dr Sekhar said that a future where every rural family lives in a pucca house with basic amenities, every village is connected by quality roads, every youth has employment opportunities, and every woman is empowered and financially independent, is not a dream but an achievable reality.
He said that to realise this vision, the Ministry must move forward with fresh energy, innovative thinking, and deep commitment.
'We are not just implementing schemes, we are writing the next chapter of India's growth story,' Dr Sekhar said, crediting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cabinet Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for the remarkable progress made in rural development.
Highlighting the success of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Dr Sekhar said it has become a powerful tool against rural unemployment and distress migration, especially during the agricultural lean seasons.
He said with an annual investment between Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,00,000 crore, the scheme generates over 250 crore person-days of work annually, with more than 36 crore job cards issued and 15 crore active workers.
The minister stressed the need to move beyond wage payments and focus on creating durable and productive assets through diversified projects.
He also called for community involvement in selecting works and greater convergence with other development schemes.
On the housing front, Dr Sekhar informed that more than 3.22 crore pucca houses have been built under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G), helping families living in kutcha or dilapidated homes.
He said the government has set a target of building an additional 2 crore houses by 2029, and encouraged the use of eco-friendly, cost-effective, and region-specific construction technologies.
Dr Sekhar also underlined the success of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), under which over 7.56 lakh kilometres of rural roads have been constructed so far.
He suggested the creation of state-level road maintenance funds, use of community-based monitoring systems, and innovative financing models to ensure sustainability of road infrastructure.

Zepto Cafe cools; Ecommerce sales pick up

Happy Wednesday! Zepto's 10-minute food delivery arm has scaled down operations due to multiple hurdles. This and more in today's ETtech Morning Dispatch. Also in the letter: ■ Indian AI startups take US flight ■ ETtech Done Deals■ Shubhanshu Shukla returns to Earth Zepto Cafe scales down amid sourcing, staffing hurdles Zepto Cafe, the 10-minute food delivery arm of quick commerce firm Zepto, is scaling down operations as it battles supply chain issues and a shortage of trained kitchen staff. The slowdown comes just as rivals Blinkit's Bistro and Swiggy's Snacc push deeper into key urban markets. By the numbers: Daily order volumes fell to 65,000–67,000 in May and June, down from 120,000–130,000 at their peak. Back in February, founder and CEO Aadit Palicha had claimed on LinkedIn that the service had crossed 100,000 daily orders. Zepto pulled the plug on Cafe operations at 44 of roughly 1,000 dark stores in May. Behind the scenes: The company has hit pause on several fried items as it retools its kitchen workflows. Suppliers say Zepto Cafe has cut back on order volumes and delayed pickups, with some reporting a fall in monthly order value from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 40–50 lakh. Deep discounts helped fuel demand across various categories, including smart TVs, headphones, air conditioners, kids' essentials, and luggage. Bright ecommerce outlook: The July 11-14 sale window saw overlapping campaigns from marketplaces like Amazon India, Flipkart, and a clutch of D2C brands. Analysts say this burst of activity could boost performance in the ongoing quarter, offering a breather amid what has otherwise been a sluggish period for ecommerce. Uptick in sales: Brands such as boAt, Eume, Uppercase, Atomberg, Solara and Zouk reported a strong jump in gains. Pradeep Krishnakumar, founder of fashion brand Zouk, said, 'Typically, Prime Day is seen as a play for legacy brands and for discounts. We saw something slightly different…that Zouk as a brand actually grew more than the category.' Festive sale preparations: Several executives said this sale window effectively kicked off festive season preparations, with brands ramping up supply chains, launching new products, and pushing fresh categories. Tesla drives into India via import route with Model Y costing `60 lakh

Mumbai: Tesla Inc officially entered India by opening its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday and rolling out its Model Y electric car. With a price tag starting at Rs 60 lakh, Model Y is the first product available in India under Elon Musk's brand. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis opened the showroom, located at Maker Maxity Mall in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), along with Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior officials of the department. In addition to the showroom, Tesla will have a service workshop and warehouse facility at Lodha Logistics Park at Sakinaka. Speaking at the launch, Fadnavis said the showroom's opening was more than just the inauguration of an experience centre. 'It is a statement that Tesla has arrived in the right city – one that is not just the financial and entertainment capital, but also the entrepreneurial capital of the country,' he said. The company has also obtained a trade certificate issued by the Andheri Regional Transport Office (RTO), which allows the usage of unregistered vehicles for certain reasons like test driving, exhibitions, delivery, and use in workshops. According to RTO officials, the five-year validity certificate was granted last week and will enable Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited to initiate vehicle demonstrations and customer engagement before deliveries. Tesla's further plans include opening a second showroom in Delhi. Sources have confirmed that a 4,000 square feet area has been finalised in Aerocity near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, with an estimated monthly rent of Rs 25 lakh.

PWD to rope in agency for DPR of 20-km elevated corridor over Munak Canal

Along the elevated corridor, the government also plans to create a recreational space, with open parks and walkways, as per the tender. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma announced this project last week, which is expected to cost Rs 3,000 crore. New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) The Public Works Department (PWD) is hiring a consultancy firm to prepare a detailed project report for the construction of an elevated corridor over the Munak Canal, officials said on Tuesday. According to the plan, a 20-kilometre elevated road will be constructed over the canal, connecting Inderlok to Bawana in northwest Delhi. The Munak Canal, a key water supply channel that runs through both Haryana and Delhi, was originally constructed to reduce water loss in the Western Yamuna Canal and ensure efficient water transport to the capital. Now, it is being seen as the base for a crucial elevated corridor to decongest the roads and reduce travel time. The elevated road will also connect to Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), further strengthening Delhi's outer ring road network and easing access to the northern and western parts of the city. As a section of the canal is under the jurisdiction of the neighbouring state, the Delhi government has applied for a no-objection certificate from the Haryana government.
