
Meril Launches MyClip, Transcatheter-Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) System in India
Meril Life Sciences, a global med-tech company, launched MyClip, a Transcatheter Edge-To-Edge Repair (TEER) system, on June 14. The Structural Heart Innovation event, held at Meril Academy, Vapi, Gujarat, from June 13–15, 2025, gathered over 150 Indian interventional cardiologists,cardiac imaging experts and international figures such as Prof. Ottavio Alfieri, Prof. Francesco Maisano, and Prof. Agricola.
The introduction to MyClip indicates developments in structural heart solutions in India and reflects Meril's commitment to accessible cutting-edge cardiac care.
MyClip TEER System is designed for patients with severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR) who face high surgical risk due to conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, advanced age, physical frailty, enlarged or weak heart, and patients with kidney, lung and liver problems. Untreated MR can have a significant mortality rate, with over 50% of patients not surviving without timely intervention, and a one-year mortality rate that can reach 57%.
The MyClip TEER System allows for the precise closure of the mitral valve flaps, which can help prevent the backward flow of purified blood into the lungs. The procedure is minimally invasive, typically lasts about an hour, and may allow patients to return home within 3–5 days. Following discharge, patients may resume daily activities like walking and non-strenuous work relatively soon after the procedure.
The COAPT Study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), reported that patients who received device-based therapy for mitral regurgitation experienced significantly better outcomes compared to those receiving standard medical treatment. Within 24 months, the hospitalisation rate for heart failure was reduced to 35.8% per patient-year in the device group, compared to 67.9% in the control group. Additionally, mortality within the same period was notably lower in the device group, at 29.1%, compared to 46.1% in the control group.
Currently, approximately 150 TEERprocedures are performed annually in India, with the majority of patients falling in the age group of 30 to 60 years. These statistics bring to light a pressing need for early and effective intervention in younger demographics.
In his inaugural speech, Sanjeev Bhatt, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Meril Life Sciences, said, 'In India, around 1.5 million people are known to have severe mitral regurgitation. Of these at least 1.2 million are post myocardial infarction (MI or a heart attack) or due to heart failure. Introduction of the MyClip TEER system marks a pivotal shift and we're witnessing early adoption. Meril's efforts in training cardiologists and building TEE-based imaging expertise are crucial steps in scaling this life-saving therapy across the country."

In this context, it counts as welcome news that Mumbai's Hinduja Hospital is opening a 'clinic' to help draft this legal document so that people can pre-notify their choices on specific forms of support. Anyone anywhere can make a living will, but since such grim options are typically confronted in hospital settings, access to this option would expand where it's needed most acutely if other hospitals follow suit. The medical system is mandated to save lives, as it should be, but this mandate now covers many life-sustaining advances that do not promise a return to any form of health that a patient may be willing to live with. It was therefore a bold call on the Indian judiciary's part to allow living wills. To prevent their misuse, however, it had initially set a very high bar, requiring a judicial magistrate to attest such a will. In 2023, the apex court eased the process. Now all it takes is two witnesses, whose attestations need to be notarized for the public record. Yet, the idea does not seem to have gotten far. Profit-driven private hospitals that bill patients heavily for intensive care, for example, may see no reason to go beyond medical care if they see more of a revenue downside than upside in advising patients to sign living wills. And with private equity and other return-chasing investors betting big money on healthcare, hospitals would be under pressure to maximize billings. Even so, a combination of ethics and customer orientation should nudge them to set up legal cells for bedside advice. Patients with poor recovery prospects need all the support that can be summoned. This includes the earnest advice of doctors as much as what the law permits. Once this practice starts at a few hospitals and word gets around, perhaps the rest would be pushed to do likewise in their quest for service parity. The force of competition does not always serve a market well if demand exceeds supply, as seen in some urban zones that are short of health facilities. In such cases, a well-rounded conception of 'care' should motivate hospitals to act. Interestingly, Maharashtra seems to have done some work on this front, having set up more than 400 custodians across the state with whom people can entrust their advance medical directives. Just as asset bequests are now routine among the aware, so might living wills come to be if they're granted publicity. Clarity on what an individual wants can save patients and their families a lot of tribulation, not to mention expenses, in no-win situations of health failure. Shubhanshu Shukla conducts stem cell study on ISS, records digestion video
Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) astronaut and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), conducted a series of scientific experiments on Monday focused on muscle health, digestion in space, and astronaut mental well-being. According to Nasa, Shukla worked inside the Kibo laboratory's Life Sciences Glovebox to study how muscle stem cells behave in microgravity. He also recorded an educational video for Indian school students explaining how the human digestive system adapts in space. Nasa said, "Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla filmed a video targeted to young Indian students discussing how the digestion system adapts to space. Next, Shukla worked in Kibo's Life Science Glovebox checking muscle stem cell cultures to learn how to maintain muscle health in space." The Life Sciences Glovebox is a sealed and sterile workspace aboard the ISS that allows astronauts to safely handle biological samples in microgravity. It is large enough to allow two astronauts to work together and is used for experiments requiring clean conditions. According to Nasa, Isro's experiment, Myogenesis, investigates how muscle cells regenerate in space. Astronauts tend to lose muscle mass during extended missions, partly due to microgravity disrupting the function of mitochondria, the part of the cell responsible for energy production. The study involves testing certain metabolic supplements to see if they can improve muscle repair in microgravity. Results from the research may help in developing treatments for age-related muscle loss or muscle-wasting diseases on Earth, in addition to improving astronaut health during long-duration spaceflights. Nasa explained the purpose, saying, "Astronauts lose muscle mass and the ability of muscle cells to regenerate during spaceflight, which may be due to microgravity interfering with metabolism in mitochondria, cell structures that produce energy. Other Ax-4 crew members also contributed to scientific research. Mission Commander Peggy Whitson used the Ultrasound 2 device to perform vein scans on Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu, to help understand how space affects blood pressure, balance, and vision. According to Nasa, the Ultrasound 2 on the International Space Station (ISS) is a modified commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) ultrasound system that provides high-resolution ultrasound images of target areas in the human body." Polish astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski tested a brain-computer interface using a special headset developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). He later joined Whitson and Shukla in filming content for an astronaut mental health study. Nasa stated, "The Thoughts over Gravity, a Test of Using fNIRS-based Brain, Computer Interface in LEO Conditions (PhotonGrav) investigation verifies the effectiveness of near-infrared technology (fNIRS) in low Earth orbit to record brain activity for constructing brain-computer interfaces (BCI) operated in the microgravity environment." Commenting on the crew's schedule, Nasa said, "The Ax-4 private astronauts had a science-packed Monday fulfilling research objectives for their home countries." The Ax-4 mission is taking place alongside the activities of the ISS's regular Expedition 73 crew. While Ax-4 focuses on privately funded science, Expedition 73 astronauts continue to work on Nasa- and ESA-backed research related to human health and biology in space. Nasa Flight Engineers Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers conducted muscle stimulation tests using biomedical equipment to examine how muscles react to electrical signals. McClain also completed cognitive tests to study how spaceflight affects brain function. Ayers and fellow astronaut Jonny Kim processed blood samples, including collections from Whitson and Uznanski-Wisniewski, for ESA's Bone on ISS study on space-induced bone loss. JAXA Commander Takuya Onishi collected and stored his own blood and urine samples for long-term health monitoring. He also worked on air quality monitoring inside the Kibo module. Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritskiy trained for the arrival of the "Progress 92" cargo spacecraft and loaded the outgoing "Progress 90" with waste for departure. Another cosmonaut, Kirill Peskov, underwent a 24-hour heart and blood pressure monitoring session and prepared the European robotic arm for upcoming operations. Summarising the week's activities, Nasa said, "The seven-member Expedition 73 crew wrapped up a weekend of housecleaning and relaxation, then kicked off Monday with muscle and brain research aboard the International Space Station. Their Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) counterparts worked throughout the weekend and began the week taking a closer look at muscle cells and exploring brain-computer interfaces." On June 26, Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to board the International Space Station. The Ax-4 crew includes former Nasa astronaut Peggy Whitson, Isro astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, and ESA astronauts Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary. The mission is expected to last up to 14 days. Axiom Mission 4 was launched at noon IST on June 25 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Nasa's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The Dragon spacecraft successfully docked with the ISS on June 26 at 4:05 pm IST, ahead of schedule, connecting to the space-facing port of the station's Harmony module.
