Lose Weight Without Quitting Sugar: Yes, You Can. Nutritionist Explains How
For many of us, the day simply does not begin without a hot cup of chai - sweetened with a teaspoon or two of sugar. But if you are trying to lose weight, you have probably been told to cut sugar out of your diet entirely. While that advice may be popular, it is not completely accurate. According to Dr Sidhant Bhargava, nutritionist known to have worked with celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Sara Ali Khan, and Ananya Panday, you can still lose weight without giving up sugar altogether. The key lies in understanding how weight loss truly works.
Let us explore the science behind this claim and see how you can enjoy your regular chini-wali chai while still achieving your fitness goals.

Sugar Is Not The Enemy. Excess Calories Are:
Dr Bhargava points out that 1 gram of sugar contains 4 calories, so 1 teaspoon (5 grams) adds only about 20 calories to your drink. If you are adding one or two teaspoons to your tea, that is merely 20-40 calories, nowhere near enough to derail your weight loss progress. "20-30-40 calories do not really matter. Overall calorie deficit matters," he says in one of his YouTube shorts.
A report by the Cleveland Clinic suggests that the average adult needs 1,800 to 2,500 calories per day, depending on age, sex, and activity level. So yes, your spoon of sugar is barely a drop in that bucket. What really matters is your total energy balance how many calories you consume versus how many you burn, not a single ingredient in isolation.

What Is A Calorie Deficit And Why Does It Matter:
A calorie deficit means consuming fewer calories than your body needs to maintain its current weight. This shortfall forces your body to use its fat stores for energy, resulting in weight loss.
Experts agree that no matter what diet you follow, whether it is keto, low-carb, intermittent fasting, or anything else, you will only lose weight if you are in a calorie deficit. Cutting sugar alone will not help if your overall calorie intake remains too high. The science is clear: how much calorie you consume and how much you burn drives the total fat loss from your body.
The Real Culprit: Sugar + Fat Combo
Dr. Bhargava further explains that the problem arises when sugar is combined with fat, especially in traditional Indian sweets like gulab jamun, kaju katli, or halwa. These are loaded with ghee, khoya, or oil, and can pack hundreds of calories per serving.
According to HealthCentre.nz, fat has 9 calories per gram, more than double the 4 calories per gram found in sugar or protein. This combo is not only calorie-dense but also spikes insulin, promoting fat storage, especially if eaten frequently.

How To Enjoy Sugar And Still Lose Weight
Here are some practical tips to help you enjoy life without derailing your progress:
1. Track your calories:
Research shows that people who log their meals are more likely to lose weight and keep it off.
2. Focus on nutrient-dense foods:
Prioritise fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources. These keep you full longer and reduce cravings.
3. Limit high-fat sugary foods:
Sweets are fine occasionally, just not every day. Savour a small portion mindfully when you do indulge.
4. Exercise regularly:
Physical activity boosts your daily calorie burn and helps preserve lean muscle, which supports metabolism.
5. Be consistent:
You do not have to be perfect. Long-term, sustainable habits are far more effective than short bursts of extreme diets.

Final Thoughts: No Need To Fear Sugar
A spoon of sugar in your chai is not the villain in your weight loss journey. What matters most is your overall calorie intake and expenditure. So instead of fearing sugar, focus on balance, awareness, and consistency. Weight loss is not about cutting out the things you enjoy, it is about making informed choices that you can sustain.

This common Indian household insect can crawl into your ears while you sleep
It's a scenario that sounds like something out of a horror story. But for many in India, it's an unsettling possibility that's all too real. A common household insect, often seen scurrying across kitchen floors or hiding in damp corners, has a peculiar habit of finding its way into people's ears while they sleep. And it doesn't just stop at crawling in, its movement inside the ear canal can cause intense discomfort, pain, and in some cases, even temporary hearing loss. Doctors across the world sometimes encounter patients in emergency rooms complaining of strange sensations, buzzing, or sharp pain in their ears, only to discover that the culprit is none other than a cockroach. These nocturnal creatures are drawn to warmth, darkness and narrow crevices, making the human ear an unintentional but ideal shelter. Cockroaches are especially active at night and can be found in abundance in Indian households, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and areas with poor ventilation or food residue. Cockroaches are nocturnal scavengers that are constantly on the hunt for food, moisture and warmth. At night, when everything is quiet and dark, cockroaches roam more freely. If someone is sleeping on the floor or close to walls, food items and drains, they become more accessible targets. The ear canal, being a warm and narrow opening, can appear to the insect as just another crevice to explore or hide in. If a cockroach does crawl into the ear, it can lead to intense discomfort. The first instinct might be to poke around or use earbuds to get it out, but that can push the insect deeper or damage the eardrum. The safest immediate response is to gently tilt the head to the affected side and avoid inserting anything into the ear. It's best to seek immediate medical attention, especially if the cockroach is still moving or the pain intensifies. To prevent such nightmarish incidents, maintain cleanliness in and around your sleeping area. Avoid sleeping directly on the floor, especially in areas prone to pests. Seal cracks in walls, repair leaky pipes, and keep kitchens and bathrooms clean and dry. You can also use earplugs at night if you're particularly worried, and ensure windows and drains are covered with fine mesh screens. Keeping your home cockroach-free is the first line of defense against any such unsettling experience.

BE to manufacture HPV9 vaccine for India, UNICEF and PAHO tender markets
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 1 (ANI): Jiangsu Recbio Technology Company Limited ( announced that they have entered into a licensing cooperation agreement, and have commenced the technology transfer of their Recombinant 9-valent HPV (HPV9) vaccine, REC603, to Biological E. Limited (BE), a leading Indian vaccine and pharmaceutical company. Recbio will provide BE with Drug Substance (DS) and transfer technology to formulate, fill, and package vaccines. It will also include technology transfer for DS production at an appropriate time in the future. According to the agreement, BE will receive the exclusive right to commercialise the vaccine in India and participate in UNICEF & PAHO tenders in other markets. The HPV9 vaccine is a recombinant vaccine designed to protect against nine types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), including those responsible for cervical, vulvar, vaginal, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers, as well as genital warts. HPV is a group of over 200 known viruses, some of which are classified as high-risk due to their potential to cause cancer. While most HPV infections are controlled by the body's immune system, persistent infections with high-risk HPV types can lead to cervical cancer and other malignancies affecting the vulva, vagina, mouth, throat, penis, and anus. In 2019 alone, HPV was linked to an estimated 620,000 cancer cases in women and 70,000 in men. Preventive vaccination, alongside HPV screening and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions, is a key strategy in reducing the global burden of HPV-related cancers. Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. The 9-valent HPV vaccine is effective in preventing around 90 percent of cervical cancer and 90 percent of anal and genital warts. Recbio's core product, REC603, is for people ranging from 9 to 45 years old and is currently in the crucial Phase III clinical trials in China. Following the signing of the technology license agreement, Recbio has begun transferring the necessary technical knowledge, materials, and expertise to BE to produce the HPV9 vaccine. Recbio will continue to support BE in clinical development and regulatory approvals to ensure a seamless transition. This collaboration comes at a crucial time, as the global demand for cervical cancer prevention is at an all-time high. By leveraging BE's advanced manufacturing capabilities, this partnership aims to increase the availability of an affordable HPV9 vaccine in India and across international markets. BE will begin large-scale manufacturing of the HPV9 vaccine once the Technology transfer is completed. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Recbio in entering the Indian and international markets, highlighting its potential in the innovative vaccine field. Dr. Liu Yong, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Recbio, stated, 'We are delighted to collaborate with Biological E. Limited. This cooperation is another significant progress for Recbio in expanding into international markets., We will work together with our Indian partner to accelerate the launch process of the HPV9 vaccine in India, and jointly make greater contributions to global public health.' Mahima Datla, Managing Director, Biological E. Limited, said: 'We are pleased to partner with Recbio to bring the HPV9 vaccine to India and other countries. This collaboration aligns with our commitment to improving global health by making essential vaccines more accessible and affordable as well as to promote a lasting legacy of innovation and stewardship. We, along with Recbio, are committed to creating a healthier and more robust future by ensuring that this life-saving vaccine is delivered to those who need it the most.' (ANI)
