Mets recall C Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A
The move comes exactly one month after the Mets sent down Alvarez, 23. At the time of his demotion, he was batting just .236 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 35 games. In 21 games with Syracuse this season, he has 11 home runs, 24 RBIs and a .270 average.
Additionally, per The Athletic, Alvarez's defense and framing -- which ranked in MLB's bottom 9 percent, according to Baseball Savant -- earned rave reviews from coaches and pitchers at Syracuse.
In a corresponding move, the Mets optioned C Hayden Senger to Triple-A. The Mets also claimed right-hander Rico Garcia off waivers and outrighted LHP Richard Lovelady to Triple-A.
The Mets designated Garcia for assignment on July 11, and the New York Yankees subsequently picked him up and waived him after one appearance.
Garcia, 31, has appeared in two games for the Mets this season, giving up no runs and a hit in 4 2/3 innings. Lovelady, 30, posted an 8.10 ERA in six relief appearances for the Mets this season.
Senger, 28, played in 21 games and was 8-for-46 with one extra-base hit and no RBIs.
The Mets also transferred RHP Dedniel Nunez (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day injured list.
Alvarez was considered the team's No. 1 prospect in 2023, but wrist and hand injuries hampered him after his rookie season. Alvarez has a career average of .223 with 40 home runs and 122 RBIs in 263 games with the Mets.
The Mets open a three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.
