Mets recall C Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A

Reuters12 hours ago
July 21 - The New York Mets recalled catcher Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A Syracuse among several moves on Monday.
The move comes exactly one month after the Mets sent down Alvarez, 23. At the time of his demotion, he was batting just .236 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 35 games. In 21 games with Syracuse this season, he has 11 home runs, 24 RBIs and a .270 average.
Additionally, per The Athletic, Alvarez's defense and framing -- which ranked in MLB's bottom 9 percent, according to Baseball Savant -- earned rave reviews from coaches and pitchers at Syracuse.
In a corresponding move, the Mets optioned C Hayden Senger to Triple-A. The Mets also claimed right-hander Rico Garcia off waivers and outrighted LHP Richard Lovelady to Triple-A.
The Mets designated Garcia for assignment on July 11, and the New York Yankees subsequently picked him up and waived him after one appearance.
Garcia, 31, has appeared in two games for the Mets this season, giving up no runs and a hit in 4 2/3 innings. Lovelady, 30, posted an 8.10 ERA in six relief appearances for the Mets this season.
Senger, 28, played in 21 games and was 8-for-46 with one extra-base hit and no RBIs.
The Mets also transferred RHP Dedniel Nunez (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day injured list.
Alvarez was considered the team's No. 1 prospect in 2023, but wrist and hand injuries hampered him after his rookie season. Alvarez has a career average of .223 with 40 home runs and 122 RBIs in 263 games with the Mets.
The Mets open a three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.

Tigers' Casey Mize, back from All-Star debut, faces Pirates

July 22 - Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize is enjoying a season of validation, and he hopes to keep adding positive results when he opposes Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. Mize (9-3, 3.15 ERA) is coming off his first All-Star selection and is finally having the season Detroit hoped to see when it selected him with the first overall pick of the 2018 draft out of Auburn. After posting a 7-9 record with a 3.71 ERA in his first full season in the majors in 2021, Mize missed most of the 2022 season and all of 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Mize struggled again in his comeback season a year ago, finishing 2-6 with a 4.49 ERA in 22 appearances (20 starts). So far this season, Mize has been a different pitcher, striking out 77 and walking 22 batters in 88 2/3 innings. "It's been a long journey," Mize said last week. "Still have a long way to go, but I feel like this is pretty validating of some hard work and some tough times turning into success and good times." Mize, however, preceded his All-Star appearance with his worst performance of this season when he allowed six runs on six hits over three innings against the Seattle Mariners on July 12. He struck out four and walked one in a 15-7 loss. Mize, who allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning in the All-Star Game, is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in two career starts against the Pirates. He beat Pittsburgh on June 17, when he tossed six innings and yielded three runs (two earned). If Mize can recapture his form, it would be a plus for the Tigers, who find themselves in the midst of their worst stretch of the season. Detroit snapped a six-game losing streak on Sunday by defeating the host Texas Rangers, but the Tigers were blanked 3-0 by the Pirates on Monday in an effort led by Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes. The Tigers are in an offensive funk, as they have scored just three runs total in four games since the All-Star break. In addition, it was unclear if shortstop Javier Baez, who sat out on Monday because of left shoulder soreness, would be available on Tuesday. Pittsburgh earned only its second win in 13 games on Monday. Before Skenes led the Pirates to victory, Keller was the only other pitcher to help his team win during that stretch. Keller (3-10, 3.48 ERA) didn't factor in the decision, but he gave up one run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts over six innings to help Pittsburgh beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 on July 13. That was the Pirates' lone victory in their nine-game road trip prior to the All-Star break. Keller, who is 1-1 with a 3.67 ERA in five career starts against the Tigers, has put together some of his best starts of the season in recent weeks. He is 2-0 with a 1.44 ERA over his past four outings (25 innings). Similar to Skenes, Keller has been hurt by lack of run support. The Pirates enter the Tuesday game averaging 2.54 runs per nine innings when Keller starts, which ranks the worst among regular starting pitchers in the National League, per The recent surge has increased contending clubs' interest in Keller as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. "Just trying to go as deep as I can and keep the pressure off the bullpen and set us up to win games," Keller said. "That's really all I'm trying to do is to be efficient and cover innings." --Field Level Media

Venus Williams makes a winning return to action at the age of 45

Venus Williams made a winning return to action after 16 months out with doubles victory alongside Hailey Baptiste in Washington on Monday. The 45-year-old seven-time grand slam tournament winner accepted a wildcard to compete in the Mubadala Citi DC Open this week. Advertisement She and fellow American Baptiste proved too strong for Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue as they triumphed 6-3 6-1 in a last-16 encounter that lasted 72 minutes. Her comeback will continue as she takes on another American in Peyton Stearns in the first round of the singles. It is Williams' first appearances in a WTA Tour event since March 2024. 'It was great to come out here and see the energy,' Williams said on Sky Sports after the match. 'As we were walking out to the court, we knew this was going to be a match. 'Our opponents actually played very well. It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. It was inspiring to be out here. I love this game and still hitting it big.' Advertisement Williams joked she wished she could have partnered with Baptiste, the 23-year-old world number 50, years earlier rather than playing with her sister Serena. She said: 'I think from the first point, I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way!' Emma Raducanu enjoyed rare doubles success in Washington. Photo: Adam Davy/PA. Britain's Emma Raducanu scored an eye-catching win on her doubles debut alongside former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Competing together for the first time, the duo fought back from an early deficit to beat fourth seeds Tereza Mihalikova and Britain's Olivia Nicholls 2-6 7-6 (4) 11-9 in a decisive tie-break set. Advertisement It was a notable win for Raducanu and Rybakina against opponents who triumphed at the Berlin Open last month and also reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this year. British number one Katie Boulter fell at the first hurdle in the singles as she went out 3-6 4-6 to Greece's Maria Sakkari. Boulter lost her opening service game in each set and was never able to regain the initiative. Earlier, former men's singles champion Dan Evans enjoyed a triumphant return to the tournament as he came from behind to beat Zizou Bergs. Advertisement Evans, the veteran former British number one, triumphed in 2023 but opted not to defend his title last year as he focused on the Olympics. The 35-year-old was awarded a wildcard to participate this time and took advantage as he overcame a slow start to beat the Belgian Bergs, the world number 52, 3-6 6-4 6-3. Bergs looked to have resisted the fightback when he edged back ahead with a break in the final set but Evans powered back to secure victory by winning four successive games. 'I didn't just want to take the wildcard and lose,' Evans said on Sky Sports. 'I felt I needed to pay them back a bit and try to 'defend' my title, because I couldn't last year. Advertisement 'It was great, really enjoyed it, but it was rally difficult. There wasn't much rhythm. He played very well and I was lucky to come through that.'

Behind loaded bullpen, Padres seek series win in Miami

July 22 - If the San Diego Padres make the playoffs this year, their bullpen will likely count as a primary factor. The Padres, who lead the majors in bullpen ERA (3.15) and saves (35), are set to face the host Miami Marlins on Tuesday night in the second game of a three-game series. In the opener on Monday, San Diego won 2-1 as its bullpen pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Following the game, Marlins rookie manager Clayton McCullough heaped praise on the Padres' relief corps. This month, San Diego became the first team in major league history to have three relievers selected for the All-Star Game -- Robert Suarez, Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam -- and all three of them pitched on Monday. "Those are high-end bullpen arms," McCullough said. The Padres also have a good arm set to start on Tuesday -- right-hander Dylan Cease, who is closing in on the one-year anniversary of his July 25 no-hitter against the Washington Nationals. Crease, though, is struggling this year with a 3-9 record and a 4.64 ERA. The Padres are 10-10 in his 20 starts this year, but Cease has lost his past three decisions. In two career starts against the Marlins, Cease is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA. He will hope to get more backing from a San Diego offense that managed only five hits on Monday and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Jake Cronenworth and Jose Iglesias each had five hits over the weekend as the Padres took two of three at Washington, but they went a combined 0-for-7 on Monday. "Cronenworth has been a good staple at the bottom (of the lineup)," Padres manager Mike Shildt said. "He has hit higher in the lineup for us historically. "(Iglesias), over the past six weeks or so, has put together a consistent stretch. Him being able to perform on both sides of the ball is very valuable." The two will look to bounce back against a Miami team that has 21 wins over the past 33 games. The Marlins, though, will need to win their next two games to clinch their third straight series. On Tuesday, the Marlins will start Sandy Alcantara, who is 2-2 with a 4.04 ERA in five career starts against the Padres. He took a no-decision at San Diego on May 28 after allowing six runs on seven hits in four innings. Alcantara, who won the 2022 National League Cy Young Award, missed last season following Tommy John surgery. He came back at the start of this season, but he hasn't been his old self, posting a 4-9 record and a 7.14 ERA. In his past four outings, Alcantara went 0-1 with a 8.61 ERA. On the plus side, he tossed at least six innings in three of those starts. Alcantara and the Marlins would love to see Kyle Stowers continue his hot streak. The team leader in home runs belted No. 22 on Monday, giving him six homers in his past five games. The Marlins are also bullish on rookie catcher Agustin Ramirez, who has 21 doubles, one triple, 14 homers, 44 RBIs and a .743 OPS through his first 75 major league games. Ramirez's defense, however, is a work in progress, though his framing on Monday resulted in a strikeout of Fernando Tatis Jr. on a pitch that was below the strike zone. "He continues to improve his receiving, especially at the bottom of the strike zone," McCullough said. "He's doing a good job of getting under those pitches and presenting them to the umpires. "There is more room for (Ramirez's) growth, but his handling of the pitchers and his in-game communication have been lights out." --Field Level Media
