Mets recall C Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A

July 21 - The New York Mets recalled catcher Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A Syracuse among several moves on Monday. The move comes exactly one month after the Mets sent down Alvarez, 23. At the time of his demotion, he was batting just .236 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 35 games. In 21 games with Syracuse this season, he has 11 home runs, 24 RBIs and a .270 average. Additionally, per The Athletic, Alvarez's defense and framing -- which ranked in MLB's bottom 9 percent, according to Baseball Savant -- earned rave reviews from coaches and pitchers at Syracuse. In a corresponding move, the Mets optioned C Hayden Senger to Triple-A. The Mets also claimed right-hander Rico Garcia off waivers and outrighted LHP Richard Lovelady to Triple-A. The Mets designated Garcia for assignment on July 11, and the New York Yankees subsequently picked him up and waived him after one appearance. Garcia, 31, has appeared in two games for the Mets this season, giving up no runs and a hit in 4 2/3 innings. Lovelady, 30, posted an 8.10 ERA in six relief appearances for the Mets this season. Senger, 28, played in 21 games and was 8-for-46 with one extra-base hit and no RBIs. The Mets also transferred RHP Dedniel Nunez (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day injured list. Alvarez was considered the team's No. 1 prospect in 2023, but wrist and hand injuries hampered him after his rookie season. Alvarez has a career average of .223 with 40 home runs and 122 RBIs in 263 games with the Mets. The Mets open a three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. --Field Level Media

Mets demote Francisco Alvarez amid recent struggles

The post Mets demote Francisco Alvarez amid recent struggles appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets finally righted the ship with Saturday night's 11-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. They set a franchise record for home runs with seven, also tying the major league baseball record in the process. Catcher Francisco Alvarez hit the final home run that tied the major league record. However, that wasn't enough to keep him with the Mets. On Sunday, the team decided to demote Alvarez to the minors according to Mets beat reporter Jorge Castillo on X, formerly Twitter. Advertisement 'The Mets optioned Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse and called up Hayden Senger,' posted Castillo on the social media platform. Senger will take Alvarez's spot on the major league roster. Luis Torrens will take over the starting role. A certainly disappointing set of circumstances for both Alvarez and the Mets brass, led by president of baseball operations David Stearns. They obviously felt Alvarez needed a reset away from the bright lights of Citi Field. Yet, as the team faces off against the Phillies for the right to hold the NL East lead, was the timing right? Can Francisco Alvarez return to Mets sooner rather than later? Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Whether it is or isn't, the move is done. Torrens is now the number one backstop. If the Mets win Sunday night, then they lead the division. After losing seven games in a row before Saturday's victory, retaking the East is certainly something New York does not want to take for granted. If Torrens gives them the best shot to capture and hold that advantage, then giving him the reins is a smart move. Advertisement Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza likely hope that Alvarez will make his return sooner rather than later. The Mets are at their best when their young catcher is producing. That evidence is clear as day based on past results. So far, that hasn't happened in 2025. If they are to get back to the playoffs and make it even further than last year, then getting him right has to be one of top priorities for Mendoza, Stearns and the rest of the New York leadership. Mets Demote Struggling Catcher Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A

Mets Demote Struggling Catcher Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Francisco Alvarez was long considered the New York Mets' catcher of the future. He still may be. But right now, he's set to the Syracuse Mets' catcher of the present. Advertisement New York demoted Alvarez on Sunday, calling up Hayden Senger in his place. Primary catching duties fall to Luis Torrens, who started the season as the Mets' No. 1 as Alvarez was injured until making his debut April 25. Alvarez slashed just .236/.319/.333 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in his 35 games. He also struck out 38 times. Brett Davis-Imagn Images Torrens' numbers are similar, but he largely isn't considered as having the upside as the 23-year-old Alvarez. Torrens is slashing .232/.309/.344. Senger is considered a defense-first catcher with limited hitting ability. The Mets snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday, beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-4. The skid allowed the Phillies to catch the Mets in the National League East standings. Both teams enter Sunday's finale at 46-31, tied for the division lead, 10 games ahead of third-place Atlanta. Advertisement Alvarez had spent most of the last two seasons as the Mets No. 1 catcher. In 2023, he clubbed 25 home runs while slugging .437. He took a step back last year, slugging just .403 and never quite looked right upon returning this season from broken hand he suffered in spring training this March. Mets send slumping catcher Francisco Alvarez to minors

PHILADELPHIA — Scuffling catcher Francisco Alvarez was demoted to the minors by the New York Mets on Sunday. The team optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled Hayden Senger from its top farm club before Sunday night's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies. Senger will back up Luis Torrens, who replaces Alvarez as New York's primary catcher. The move comes after Alvarez went 2 for 5 with a 452-foot home run late in Saturday night's 11-4 victory over Philadelphia, which snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Mets. But he is batting only .236 with three homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and a .652 OPS in 35 games this year. Alvarez was activated April 25 after beginning the season on the injured list with a hamate fracture in his left hand, and he missed two games this month while on the paternity list. The 23-year-old Alvarez, once rated baseball's best minor league prospect, had 25 homers and 63 RBIs with a .721 OPS as a rookie in 2023. Senger, 28, made his major league debut for the Mets this season and was batting .179 (5 for 28) in 13 big league games. New York began the day tied with Philadelphia atop the NL East. ___ AP MLB:
