Successor to 14th Dalai Lama can be chosen only by established conventions: India
On Wednesday, the 14th Dalai Lama had said that the centuries-old institution of the Dalai Lama would continue, and the Gaden Phodrang Trust – a non-profit organisation that his office set up in 2011 — would have the 'sole authority' to recognise his reincarnation.
New Delhi also said that Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajeev Ranjan Singh would be attending the 14th Dalai Lama's 90th birthday on Sunday.

The Centre's statement also comes a day after China rejected the succession plan and reiterated that any future heir must receive its seal of approval. 'The Dalai Lama's reincarnation must follow the principles of domestic recognition, the 'golden urn' process, and approval by the central government, in line with religious traditions and laws,' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.
Beijing's reaction came after the Dalai Lama had said: 'I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has the sole authority to recognise the future reincarnation. No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter.'

Bhubaneswar: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan Thursday inaugurated multiple development projects worth Rs 44 crore during his one-day visit to Angul district, including significant upgrades to his alma mater. The minister inaugurated 34 projects valued at Rs 44.88 crore and laid foundation stones for 19 projects worth Rs 8.9 crore. Key initiatives include road improvements across Kosala-Chhendipada and NH-55 to Patharagada, along with educational infrastructure development. The initiative includes a mobile sapling distribution vehicle, an information van, and the "Green Angul" mobile app. Various welfare schemes' benefits were distributed to eligible beneficiaries, including Nirman Shramik Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, and Kendu Leaf Workers Scheme. "Under the double-engine government, development is reaching every corner of the state," Pradhan stated, emphasising the fulfilment of election promises. The inauguration ceremony was attended by local officials and beneficiaries. The projects are expected to significantly boost infrastructure and educational facilities in the region.

Dharmendra to visit CUO
Koraput: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will visit the Central University of Odisha (CUO), Sunabeda, on Saturday. He will lay the foundation stone for a large-scale infrastructure project in CUO campus and inaugurate several newly-completed facilities, including the academic building, health centre, the official residence of the vice-chancellor, and residential quarters for university officers' and staff. These developments aim to upgrade academic and residential standards at the university, reinforcing its position as a centre of learning and growth, reads a varsity release. According to the release, a major highlight of the occasion will be the signing of an MoU among six premier centrally funded higher education institutions in Odisha CUO, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIM Sambalpur, NIT Rourkela, IISER Berhampur, and the National Sanskrit University, Puri. The pact is designed to foster academic synergy through multidisciplinary research, faculty and student exchange, and joint use of resources and credits, it reads. Preparatory work for Census 2027 begins with two-day conference
The preparations for Census 2027 kicked off on Thursday (July 3, 2025) with the inauguration of a two-day conference of Directors of Census Operations (DCO) from across the country. At the conference, the DCOs were informed about the processes that would have to be followed for the forthcoming Census, the first phase of House Listing Operations and Housing Schedule (HLO) expected to begin April 1, 2026. Before the first phase begins, a pre-test exercise will be held where tentative questions will be asked by enumerators. The notification for pre-test is likely to be issued in August, a senior government official said. A pre-test was carried out in 2019 across 76 districts in 36 States and Union Territories, covering a population of over 26 lakh. For Census 2021, which will now be known as Census 2027, as many as 31 questions were notified for the first phase. A senior government official said that a portal will be launched soon to get real-time information on field work. The DCOs and other senior Census officials will be able to monitor various verticals such as the finalisation of administrative units, preparation of code directories, schedule of training of enumerators, questionnaires for pre-test exercise among others. This will be the first digital Census and also the first to enumerate caste in independent India. Caste will be counted in the second and the main phase of the Census, which will be conducted in February 2027. On June 27, Mr. Narayan had written to Chief Secretaries of all States that the preparations for Census 2027 was underway and any changes to boundaries of administrative units should be effected by December 31, 2025 as the first phase or the HLO begins April 1, 2026. It asked the States to submit the details of changes made to the boundaries till that date. According to the Constitutional mandate, the first Census after 2026 can be used as the basis to redraw Lok Sabha constituencies. The next General Election is expected to be held in 2029. On June 16, the RGI notified the process in the Gazette of India. Around 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors, mainly drawn from officials working with the State governments and 1.3 lakh Census functionaries are expected to be deployed for the exercise.
