Jordan: PDTRA chief explores enhanced tourism cooperation with UNWTO in Madrid
AMMAN — In a bid to strengthen international relations and expand avenues of tourism cooperation, Chief Commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) Fares Braizat met with Director of the Affiliate Members Department at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Ion Vilcu.
The meeting, held at the organisation headquarters in Madrid, focused on exploring ways to enhance cooperation in the tourism sector, reviewing regional and global developments, addressing current challenges, and identifying collaborative efforts to promote sustainable tourism, according to a PDTRA statement.
Braizat highlighted the 'significant' impact of regional instability on Jordan's tourism sector, particularly in Petra, which witnessed a 74 per cent decline in international visitors in 2024 compared to 2023.
He stressed the 'vital' role of UNWTO in shaping tourism policies and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise among countries and affiliate members.
The chief commissioner praised the ongoing partnership between PDTRA and UNWTO, noting that Petra has been an affiliate member since 2023.
He underscored that this cooperation opens new horizons for promoting Petra globally and supporting the site's tourism development.
Vilcu welcomed the collaboration with PDTRA, praising Jordan's efforts in promoting cultural and heritage tourism.
He highlighted the organisation's commitment to supporting initiatives that contribute to the development of tourism destinations and sustainable growth for local communities.
This meeting aligns with PDTRA's 'strategic' vision to enhance international presence and foster cooperation with global tourism stakeholders, aiming to boost Petra's position as a leading global destination, the statement added.

Dubai approves Dh650 million Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary project
Dubai Municipality on Monday announced a project to develop the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, at a total cost of Dh650 million. To be completed over two phases, the first of which will be finished by the end of 2026 at a cost of Dh100 million, the project aims to boost biodiversity and establish the sanctuary as an eco-tourism destination. It will involve the construction of 5.6km of cycling tracks, as well as 3km of walking trails throughout the sanctuary. The project is being co-ordinated by Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority. A natural haven Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the largest and most significant nature reserves in Dubai, covering approximately 6.4 square kilometres. It was the first site in the UAE to be listed under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 2007 and is classified under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines. The sanctuary is counted among the most biodiversity-rich natural reserves in the region, hosting nearly 450 species of flora and fauna, including 47 hectares of mangroves. It welcomes around 20,000 migratory birds annually, including the iconic flamingo. 'With its unique design, the project marks a major milestone in the development and preservation of natural reserves, Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, director general of Dubai Municipality, said. Dubai Municipality unveiled the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development Project on Monday, aiming to increase visitor numbers six-fold to range between 250,000 and 300,00 each year. The contract for the first phase of the Dh650 million project was awarded, and the initial phase will be completed by the end of next year, it announced. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a wetland reserve located near Dubai's city centre, featuring a rich blend of salt flats, mangroves, and lagoons. Recognised as a globally important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, it is home to over 450 species of flora and fauna, playing a vital role in regional biodiversity. The sanctuary includes several bird hides along its perimeter, where visitors can observe a wide range of birds in their natural habitat. The Flamingo Hide offers views of iconic greater flamingos, while the Mangrove Hide provides sightings of species such as grey herons, spoonbills, kingfishers, and even osprey. The municipality announced that the new development project includes, in its first phase, a 144% increase in water bodies within the place, expanding their total area to 74 hectares. Sheikh Mohammed says aim is for every Emirati to be financially stable
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, on Monday reviewed a programme aimed at enhancing the economic, financial and entrepreneurial capabilities of Emiratis. He visited the New Economy Academy in Dubai, where he was briefed on the variety of academic programmes offered by the institution. 'Our goal is to see every Emirati household enjoying family cohesion, financial stability, and greater awareness of the future and its tools,' Sheikh Mohammed said. He listened to a presentation by Dr Laila Faridoon, chief executive of the New Economy Academy, about its key programmes to support citizens and enhance their capabilities across economic and financial domains. Programmes offered by the academy include financial awareness, entrepreneurship, capital markets, real estate pathway, and homebuilding pathway. Family planning Sheikh Mohammed was also briefed on the Family Financial Literacy Programme. It supports the Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Family Programme, which promotes the well-being of Emirati families in Dubai, by offering insights to boost family stability and cohesion, reinforce societal values and enhance quality of life. Since its launch, 175 people have graduated from the programme with more scheduled in future. Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, director general of the Community Development Authority in Dubai, said the aim is to roll out more programmes aimed at supporting families through every situation and stage of life. The aim of these is to enable couples preparing for marriage, as well as newlyweds, to practice sound financial planning and manage resources effectively to ensure long-term stability.
