Air India crash top updates: Centre says Boeing 787 fleet being examined, 11 DNA samples match
In the first press conference after the crash, Naidu stated that the Union government will look into all possible theories of what could have caused the disaster. He added that an extended surveillance of all Boeing 787 flights operational in India would be conducted.
On Thursday, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, which was en route to London's Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad, crashed just 33 seconds after taking off.
This is being viewed as the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade.
There were 242 people aboard the aircraft. One passenger survived with ' impact injuries '.
A total of 274 bodies had been sent for postmortem, according to The Times of India. This included 33 persons who were killed on the ground when the aircraft crashed into the hostel building of the BJ Medical College in Meghani Nagar area of Ahmedabad.

In the aftermath of the crash, eight of the Boeing 787 aircraft have so far been inspected following the directive issued Friday by the aviation safety regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation, said Naidu during the press conference.
Later in the day, Air India announced that it had completed one-time safety checks on nine out of 33 of its Boeing 787 aircraft. It added that the checks were still underway for the remaining 24 aircraft and warned that this could 'lead to higher turnaround time and potential delays on certain long-haul routes, especially those to airports with operating curfews'.
The Tata Group has announced that the families of the 33 persons who died on the ground will also receive a monetary compensation of Rs 1 crore. Beside the medical expenses for the injured will be fully covered, The Indian Express reported. An unidentified official told the newspaper that 'nothing has been decided' about providing jobs to the next of kin.
The DNA samples of 11 of the persons who died in the crash have matched, Dr Rajnesh Patel, the head of surgery at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, told The Hindu. One body has been handed over to the family. On Friday, a police officer had said that six bodies were handed over to the family after identification.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge visited the site of the crash on Saturday and also met those were injured and are being treated at hospitals. 'My deepest condolences and thoughts are with the families of the victims, crew, pilot and people on the ground who have lost their lives, including medical students,' Kharge said on social media.

Gram Sabhas hold authority to prepare CFR management plans, says Centre
The power to prepare Community Forest Resource (CFR) management plans rests with villages through their Gram Sabhas and not with any department of either the Union or State governments, officials of the Tribal Affairs Ministry in New Delhi said on Friday (July 4, 2025). The role of governments is limited to assisting Gram Sabhas in this process, they added. This clarification follows the withdrawal of an order by the Chhattisgarh Forest Department that had prohibited CFR management work across the State in areas where rights had been granted under the Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006. The order, issued by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in May, had sparked State-wide protests from forest-dwelling communities and civil society groups. The Forest Department had cited a 2024 joint communication from the Union Ministries of Tribal Affairs and Environment, under which the Tribal Affairs Ministry was to prepare 'model' CFR management plans for circulation to States. Based on this, the Department claimed that no CFR management activity could proceed until these model plans were delivered. However, Union government officials told The Hindu that 'the joint communication was not supposed to halt CFR management work till the model plans are prepared'. State officials further explained that community-led forest resource management and conservation cannot have 'one plan that fits all', adding that each village will have to tailor their plans according to the nature, amount and geography of the forests in their respective areas. In their protest letters to the Chief Minister, Gram Sabhas alleged that the Forest Department was attempting to wrest control of CFR management from them - an authority they hold under the FRA and the CFR guidelines issued by the Tribal Affairs Ministry. The earlier Forest Department order had also interrupted plans by the Tribal Development Department to empanel NGOs to support villages in drafting their CFR management plans. With Thursday's withdrawal of the order, officials in Chhattisgarh confirmed that the process can now resume. 'We had asked for guidance from the Tribal Affairs Ministry on this and a formal response is expected any day now. It has also been learnt that the Union Ministry will soon be sharing its model plans, which will just be a broad framework,' a State official said. Though the FRA was enacted in 2006 with the intent of involving forest-dependent communities in conservation and management, it was only in 2023 that the Tribal Affairs Ministry issued detailed guidelines that gave exclusive authority to Gram Sabhas for preparing and approving CFR plans. The Ministry clarified that any synchronisation required with forest department codes should occur after Gram Sabhas have finalised their plans. To facilitate this process, the Union government in 2023 launched the Dharti Aba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyaan, a separate programme that enabled State governments to empanel NGOs to assist Gram Sabhas in preparing CFR management plans.

SDM seeks anticipatory bail after steno's arrest
Ludhiana: SDM (Raikot) Gurbir Singh Kohli filed an anticipatory bail plea following the arrest of his stenographer in a corruption case. He alleged political pressure from MLA (Raikot) Hakam Singh Thekedar and his personal assistant to issue illegal orders in revenue matters. The bail application, filed in the court of Special Judge Amrinder Singh Shergill, was dismissed as premature. The court noted that the SDM has not yet been named as an accused and granted him the liberty to seek legal remedy if and when that happens. The case dates back to June 13 arrest of Jatinder Singh, the stenographer posted in the SDM's office, who was caught accepting a bribe of over Rs 24 lakh. The arrest followed a complaint by a resident of Sukhana village, who alleged that both the SDM and his stenographer were extorting money in exchange for official work. In his bail plea, the SDM claimed that he was being falsely implicated for resisting political interference. He alleged that since his posting as SDM, Raikot on April 16, 2025 (and during his previous tenure from October, 2021 to October, 2023), the MLA and his aide repeatedly pressured him—through personal meetings, phone calls, and WhatsApp messages—to pass unlawful orders. He cited a specific instance where he refused to cancel a sale deed that lacked legal merit, which allegedly angered the MLA and his assistant. According to the SDM, the refusal led to a conspiracy to frame him in the bribery case. Raikot MLA Hakam Singh Thekedar has strongly denied the allegations, saying that he never asked the SDM to engage in any illegal activity.
