BUKIT MERTAJAM: On June 2, Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang, formally approved the establishment of the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary movement during a presentation meeting at the Minor Basilica of St Anne. With this endorsement, the Diocese of Penang becomes the first in Malaysia to officially recognise this international Marian movement, which is currently active in more than 50 countries. The Flame of Love movement originated in Hungary, inspired by messages reportedly received by Elizabeth Kindelmann, a Third Order Carmelite, from Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her spiritual diary, later published under the title The Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, includes the Unity Prayer and a special petition to be added to the Hail Mary: 'Spread the effect of grace of thy Flame of Love over all of humanity.'The mission of the Flame of Love is to lead individuals to a deeper consecration to Jesus through Mary. The movement promotes a life rooted in prayer, fasting, frequent attendance at Mass (beyond weekends), regular confession, Eucharistic Adoration, and family prayer. Members also commit to praying for world peace, clergy and religious vocations, the souls in purgatory, and conduct home visits with a pilgrim statue of Our Lady.During the event, Cardinal Sebastian invited members of the movement to share personal testimonies about the impact of the Flame of Love, especially through its unique Rosary devotion.Anna Tan shared how the Rosary has helped her grow in meditative prayer and establish a consistent spiritual routine. Elizabeth Lim highlighted how praying together as a community has deepened their sense of unity and faith. Winnie Gracia gave a moving testimony of seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary in a dream, smiling with a rosary surrounded by fresh roses. She also described frequently smelling roses and jasmine during prayer, even when none were physically present.Elizabeth Raymond spoke about her commitment to fasting every Monday and Friday to support the movement's mission of 'blinding Satan and spreading love worldwide.' Ester Ooi expressed how meaningful it is to recite the Hail Mary with the added Flame of Love petition. Cecilia Lee, from a devout Hakka family, shared the joy of being invited by Cardinal Sebastian to recite the Hail Mary in her native Hakka dialect, bringing back cherished memories of her childhood prayers with her mother in Changloon, Kedah.Indiana Ann Oh summed up the testimonies by stressing the urgency of praying for humanity in today's troubled world. After hearing all 13 heartfelt testimonies, Cardinal Sebastian remarked, 'As the English saying goes, 'He who bakes the cake eats it,'' suggesting that those who have nurtured the movement are now ready to enjoy its spiritual fruits. He affirmed his full support, along with Deacon Lazarus Jonathan and the People of God of the Penang Diocese, in uplifting and promoting the Flame of Love Movement. The members present were filled with joy and gratitude.Sr Mercie Lai, of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM), also offered her reflections: 'As we read the signs of the times, it is alarming to witness humanity under constant attack — families in crisis, and widespread suffering. The Flame of Love Movement is timely, offering us assurance and hope. Jesus is the Door of Hope, and through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we are called to spread the Flame of Love and pray for humanity.' Since March 2025, Sr Mercie has been providing spiritual guidance to the group, which gathers weekly at the Minor Basilica of St. Anne for prayer and meditation.Vanitha Nadaraj, the national coordinator for Malaysia, also expressed her gratitude: 'With this official recognition, we pray that Our Blessed Mother's mission will spread across the nation. Through her intercession, we will extinguish the fire of hatred with the fire of love. Let us allow her to lead us to the Flame of Love, who is JESUS HIMSELF.'
In 2013, Pope Francis granted his Apostolic Blessing to the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 2023, the Archdiocese of Singapore officially accepted the Flame of Love as a recognised ministry.

Ukrainian and Vatican summer camp children receive visit by Pope Leo

Pope Leo XIV meets with over 600 children in the Paul VI Hall, including participants from the Vatican's summer camp and Ukrainian children hosted by Caritas Italiana. Jul 03, 2025 The meeting with the children (@VATICAN MEDIA) VATICAN: Shortly before noon and following the conclusion of his audiences, Pope Leo XIV took the time to greet over 300 children and young people participating in the 'Estate Ragazzi in Vaticano' summer camp, gathered in the Paul VI Hall. They were joined by another 300 children and adolescents from Ukraine, welcomed to Italy for the summer by Caritas Italiana. After being welcomed by the young volunteers working at the summer camp, the Pope spent time speaking with the children and answering several of their questions. Recalling his own childhood, he shared memories of attending Mass, a place where he encountered other children and friends, but above all, 'the best friend of all: Jesus.' Reflecting on the themes of diversity and welcome, Pope Leo addressed the Ukrainian children with words of greeting in English. He highlighted the importance of mutual respect and the need to look beyond differences: 'It is important to build bridges, to create friendship. We can all be friends, brothers, and sisters,' he said. Builders of peace and friendship In response to a question about war, the Holy Father encouraged the children to become builders of peace and friendship, even from a young age. 'Do not enter into war or conflict. Never promote hatred or envy,' he said, reminding them that 'Jesus calls us all to be friends,' and he explained the importance of 'learning from childhood to respect one another and to see the other as someone like myself.' The children presented Pope Leo with a variety of gifts, including handmade crafts created during the summer camp, as well as drawings and artwork prepared by the Ukrainian children. At the conclusion of the encounter, after taking group photos, Pope Leo invited everyone to pray the Hail Mary together and imparted his blessing on all those present.--Vatican News

South Korean Catholic convert finds strength in Legion of Mary

Even at 94, Helena Heo Yung-ja continues her life of witness and prayer with a smile May 21, 2025 Heo Yong-ja, the 94-year-old head of the Legion of the Central Episcopal Parish of Jeonju Diocese. (Photo: SEOUL: For 94-year-old Helena Heo Yung-ja, her time at the Legion of Mary has been an inseparable part of her daily life and a testament to her faith. 'I always say, 'now is heaven,' because I live with God, Jesus, and Mary in my heart,' says Heo, who converted to Catholicism in 1957 at the age of 26. 'When I think about that, it makes me humble and careful, and I try to live a life that is pleasing to them,' adds Heo. But her association with the Legion of Mary is as old as her faith. She has been a member of the Legion of Mary Hope of Sinners Presidium for 68 years. A regular at presidium meetings A regular face at presidium meetings, Heo has only missed a few of them following a hospitalization due to leg surgery. Heo says she would hurry home after visiting her children, who were staying in other parts of South Korea, to ensure she did not miss the Legion meetings. 'We are the Legionaries of Mary, so how can we miss the [Legion] meetings?' Heo says when asked about the enthusiasm and dedication she exhibits for the Legion. As a result of her consistent dedication, Bishop Sun Tae Kim of Jeonju awarded Heo a certificate of appreciation as part of the 70th anniversary celebration of the introduction of the Legion of Mary in the diocese on May 17. However, her dedication was also acknowledged by her appointment as the presidium director at the Cathedral Church, a position that Heo says she initially declined. 'At the age of 94, I was asked to preside over the Legion, and although I refused, I accepted when they asked me to preside at the beginning of the meeting,' says Heo. The presidium in Jeonju started in 1955, about two years after Columban Father Harold Henry introduced the Legion of Mary to South Korea at Kwangju's Kyong-dong and Sanjong-dong parishes in 1953. Frank Duff, a layperson and civil servant, founded the Legion of Mary in Dublin, Ireland, in 1921. The Marian movement, an international association of lay members of the Catholic Church, now has more than 10 million members across 170 countries. The Legion aims to glorify God through the holiness of its members, through prayer and active cooperation in the Church's work. Daily Mass and Rosary recitations For Heo, another activity that bolstered her faith life was attending daily Mass at the church. She says that she used to attend Holy Mass daily since her baptism, but had to discontinue a few months back due to health concerns. A regular at the church, Heo even has a seat that is reserved for her. Heo says she loves to recite the Rosary as a small contribution to Mother Mary, whom she believes prays tirelessly for the world and remembers each individual. She says she does not have a favorite Rosary, pointing out that 'they are all the same, a tool to pray to the Holy Mother.' She claims that she used to recite up to 100 decades, equivalent to twenty cycles of the complete Rosary, in a day. However, due to her advancing age, she has reduced the numbers to 70 decades a day. More than 60 converts to Catholicism For Heo, her faith and steadfastness also led more than 60 people to the Catholic faith, for which she received the Legion of Mary Award for Mission Excellence in 2014. But Heo recalls that bringing her husband to the Catholic faith was the most challenging ordeal she faced. 'I had a hard time because of my husband, but I left it all to Mary,' says Heo. Heo recalls how her husband would come home from time to time and ask for a divorce, which was painful for her. She often prayed in tears in front of the statue of Our Lady in the cathedral, seeking divine help in mending the relationship with her husband. The Pieta, which depicts Mother Mary holding the body of Jesus, reminded her that the suffering she faced was nothing compared to Mary's, she says. 'Whenever he came home, I would treat him with all my heart, and he eventually relented and was baptized and confirmed at the age of 80,' says Heo. Heo says her husband's conversion happened with the help of her children, the parish priest, and nuns. She said she is happy that her husband received the Sacrament of the Sick before he died peacefully. At 94, Heo continues her life of witness and prayer, with a smile for
