‘On our doorstep:' Coweta County passes 180-day moratorium on data center proposals after 2 approved
The decision came Tuesday, just weeks after commissioners voted to approve a data center project.
During an executive session, commissioners expressed concerns with data center development and the county's lack of specific and detailed guidelines for the proposals.

'I believe we need the ordinance to protect us as a county, protect our citizens and I also believe that we need to pass a moratorium on rezonings for data centers,' said Comm. Bill McKenzie during the executive session. 'I'm not against data centers, in the least, but I think they need to be in the right place, and that being in our industrial areas and uh that's just the way I feel.'
During discussion of a moratorium, commissioners asked the county attorney and the attorney for the Coweta County Development Authority about how a moratorium would impact the two projects already approved for development, which are Project Sail and Project Peach.

'I don't disagree that we're being inundated with these data centers and we don't have our ducks in a row,' Comm. John Reidelbach said. 'Can we still put a moratorium in place and make them wait to get this ordinance in place?'
Channel 2 Action News covered the $17 billion Project Sail's development proposal back in January when it first began to apply for approval.
Project Peach was approved, with more than two dozen conditions, on April 16.
At that commission meeting, Channel 2's Eryn Rogers heard from Palmetto residents who are pushing back strongly against the new development.
'We just approved one here a couple of weeks ago, and we put in 27 conditions, am I correct Mr. Fouts?' Reidelbach asked the county attorney, Michael Fouts.
Fouts confirmed there were numerous conditions for approval for Project Peach.
To better serve their constituents and set proper guidelines for the data center development process, commissioners voted to have a 180 day pause on new proposals, which would last until Nov. 3.
During the moratorium, county staff would have the opportunity to set 'minimum standards and the other things [that] will come into a zoning condition,' according to Fouts.
Commissioner Jeff Fisher said he agreed with the comments of his board colleagues but wanted to have a more detailed discussion with staff.
'I know what it's going for, but we have two and we have to address what is on our doorstep today,' Fisher said.
Commissioners chose to have a vote on the moratorium at the public board meeting later on Tuesday evening, eventually passing it unanimously.
The moratorium will run for 180 days, but if an ordinance is drafted that handles the guidelines they feel necessary, and it passes a commission vote before Nov. 3, the moratorium could be lifted early.

With Micah Parsons officially requesting a trade from the Dallas Cowboys, an old clip of his father, Terrence Parsons, talking about preferred destinations for his son in a hypothetical trade scenario has resurfaced. Dallas has no plans of trading Parsons, but if they can't agree on a long-term extension with him, they may be forced to move him at some point. Parsons' father's landing spots for the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher are bold. Adding Parsons to Kansas City's defense would be lethal, while pairing the disgruntled Cowboy with Watt or Hutchinson in Detroit would also be pretty much unstoppable. However, none of the teams Parsons' dad listed as preferred spots have the money to sign Parsons to a record-breaking extension. The Chiefs are slated to have negative $61 million in cap space next offseason, and the Steelers already have two expensive edge rushers in Watt and Alex Highsmith. As for the Lions, the team must prioritize getting an extension done with Hutchinson first, which likely takes them out of the running for Parsons. It's possible that Parsons lands with one of three destinations his dad spoke about during a podcast appearance last year, as all three franchises are playoff contenders, and two are legitimate Super Bowl contenders in Kansas City and Detroit. However, it remains to be seen whether any have the money to sign Parsons to a new deal after trading valuable picks for him while also keeping their core together. NFL Commanders win key vote in quest for new stadium
Washington DC City Council members voted 9-3 on Friday to approve a $1.1 billion funding bill, a major step in the Washington Commanders' quest for a proposed $3.8 billion NFL stadium. The plan would also include housing, shops and parking at the site of the team's former home, RFK Stadium. Mayor Muriel Bowser backed the plan but council chair Phil Mendelson sought changes that led to the NFL club offering a better deal in the end, one that needed at least a two-thirds vote from the 12-member panel and had more than enough for approval. A second vote must be taken in September for final approval, but that is expected to be a copy of the first. The new venue is expected to open in 2030. The team has played in nearby Maryland since leaving RFK after the 1996 NFL season.
