Amit Shah directs formation of multi-disciplinary central team to visit disaster torn Himachal

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the formation of a multi-sectoral central team to visit Himachal Pradesh in view of the frequency and intensity of natural disasters in the state, officials said on Sunday.
The officials stated that the team would comprise experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, a Geologist, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore.
'The Union Home Minister's direction came following a recent meeting in which he was apprised that Himachal Pradesh has witnessed an increase in the frequency and intensity of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides and torrential rainfall, causing widespread loss of life, damage to infrastructure, livelihoods and environmental degradation,' a senior official of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said.
He said, further, in the wake of floods, flash floods and landslides during the South West monsoon 2025 in different parts of the state, the Centre has already deputed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) in advance, without waiting for their memorandum, for on-the-spot, first-hand assessment of the damages.
The IMCT has already started their visit to the affected areas on July 18 and would travel in the state till July 21, he said. He added that a high-level committee chaired by the Home Minister has already approved an outlay of Rs 2,006.40 crore to Himachal Pradesh for recovery and reconstruction in areas affected by disasters for the year 2023, and has also released the first installment of Rs 451.44 crore on July 7 this year.

SC rejects plea seeking delimitation of Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking directions to the Union government to conduct the delimitation process in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, reported Live Law. Delimitation is the process of redrawing the territorial boundaries of electoral constituencies. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh rejected the petitioner's argument that holding the exercise only in Jammu and Kashmir last year and not in the southern states was ' arbitrary or violative of the Constitution', according to Bar and Bench. The Union government had started the delimitation process of Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir in February 2020. In May 2022, the number of elected Assembly seats in the Union Territory was increased from 83 to 90 in the final delimitation order. Of the seven new seats, one was given to Kashmir, taking its total to 46, and six were given to Jammu, which now has 43 seats. K Purushottam Reddy, a professor, had approached the Supreme Court stating that excluding Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from the exercise 'created an unreasonable classification and was therefore unconstitutional', reported Live Law. Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated in 2014 to create Telangana. The Assembly of the undivided state had 294 seats. After the bifurcation, the Assembly in Andhra Pradesh was allocated 175 seats and Telangana 119. On Thursday, the Supreme Court stated that allowing the delimitation process in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana 'will open floodgates for all states to approach seeking parity'. The bench also said that the provisions dealing with delimitation in states were different from Union Territories.

Mark Matthews on why FTA with UK, US trade deal shouldn't matter much for India

He hopes it will encourage a US trade deal before August 6. A US deal could boost the stock market. Matthews anticipates a US tariff for India between 15% and 20%. He considers US trade less crucial for India than for other nations.: I do not know what the impact will be for the UK economy, but it is not big for India as you know UK trade is an extremely small part of India's overall economy. But what I would say is that it should be a boost for sentiment because they have been doing these talks for about three months and hopefully will put pressure on the government to do the trade deal with the United States before the August 6th deadline. That would be a much needed boost for the stock market if that comes I would expect it to come in somewhere between 15% and 20% with 20% being the ceiling for the Southeast Asian countries like the Philippines and Indonesia. They are at 19% and then 15% was the recent trade deal with Japan. So, that is the range I am looking for. If it was above 20%, then I would be disappointed, I do not know about the market. Unlike Japan or the Philippines, trade with the US is not material for the Indian economy. I find this is frankly more noise than substance.: I like two things. First, I like the fact that the sector is down almost 20% so far this year. It is not across the sector but there are pockets of very deep value. This is a place in India where you can find deep value. And the second thing is that the guidance from management in the most recent quarterly results was largely positive, looking for better times ahead. So, those are the two reasons why we like it.I am sorry I do not have a view on that, but I can tell you what we think about the consumer space. It will be a beneficiary of the Rs 1 lakh crore tax breaks that were announced in the Budget back in February and we should start to see that filter through, but also the one percentage point cut in the RBI's rate since the last five months – these two forces should be beneficial for the entire space, especially for bigger ticket items like autos and property.I think I was wrong and I remember that conversation. It is probably higher than when we last spoke. I felt that it was overbought because at that time it was up about 25% from the beginning of the year. Now, it is up about 28%. I think what I told you at the time is I preferred the idea of buying stocks in Hong Kong relative to gold. So, I suspect on that basis, it might have been the right call. Hong Kong stocks have done better than gold since we last met. But yes, if you look back over the last 100 years, gold's return is on average 5% a year in US dollars. So it has been a very fine investment, but it does move in spurts and we have just had one of those big spurts over the last two I would have thought it was due for a break, and it continues to go up. Long-term, the thing that speaks in favour of gold is that most central banks do not have enough of it and they would like to diversify away from a very heavy concentration in dollars. In fact, there was a survey that came out last month that showed off all the assets that the major central banks of the world said they intended to increase their allocation to over the next 5 to 10 years, gold had the largest vote in there will be a steady buyer of gold from central banks, but they do not tend to chase the price. They tend to be very calm and steady in their buying of it. I do not want to ramble, but what I am trying to say is I still feel that it is overbought in the short term, but longer term it should continue to demonstrate that attribute of going up about 5% per year over the long term.

India hits 20% ethanol blending target 5 years early; big jump from 1.5% in 2014: Report

Representative AI image India has reached its target of blending 20% ethanol with petrol five years ahead of schedule, according to the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA). This marks a major leap from just 1.5% ethanol blending in 2014, when the program was launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, ISMA said in a statement on Friday. The ethanol blending program has yielded considerable economic and environmental advantages, as evidenced by ISMA's statistics. "This achievement is a monumental leap for India's energy independence and rural prosperity," Deepak Ballani, Director General of ISMA told PTI. "The government's unwavering policy direction and visionary leadership have not only made this national success possible five years ahead of schedule but have also set a powerful precedent for our collective future in green energy," Ballani added. From 38 crore litres in 2014, ethanol production increased to 661 crore litres blended as of June 2025, resulting in 698 lakh tonnes reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The agricultural sector has benefited substantially, with farmers receiving Rs 1.18 lakh crore and distilleries earning Rs 1.96 lakh crore. Additionally, India has saved Rs 1.36 lakh crore in foreign exchange expenditure. The sugar industry has been instrumental in India's ethanol production, utilising sugarcane juice, B-heavy molasses and other agricultural by-products for biofuel production, according to ISMA. Reaching the 20% ethanol blending target, originally set for 2030, shows India's strong commitment to cutting down on fossil fuel imports and boosting rural economic growth, the industry association noted.
