Johari to Umno: Stop dwelling on past, face today's realities

KUANTAN: Umno must stop dwelling on its decades of past glory and instead confront current realities, including winning the support of young voters, to re-establish itself as a strong political force ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).
Its vice-president, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, said the party must stay relevant in today's political landscape, particularly by engaging and convincing young voters, who are expected to comprise nearly 40 per cent of the electorate in GE16.
"Umno was once a dominant party, but now holds only 26 parliamentary seats. It led the country for nearly 60 years, but in the past two terms, it has operated within a power-sharing government.
"The party must learn from its past mistakes, avoid repeating them, and focus on rebuilding. Today's youth are educated, with many holding PhDs, master's degrees, bachelor's degrees or diplomas, and a significant number excelling in TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training).
"They evaluate leaders based on present-day actions, not the party's historical achievements. Young people are not interested in Umno's past glories. Instead, they are seeking leaders who demonstrate integrity, accountability and credibility, and who are free from corruption.
"There are times when their views may seem overly idealistic, but many of the points they raise are valid," he said in his speech when opening the Kuantan Umno division delegates' meeting here today.
Also present was Kuantan Umno division chief Datuk Seri Ab Hamid Mohd Nazahar.
Johari said that to gain young voters' support, Umno must meet their expectations, as many now view political issues from a very different perspective.
"After completing their studies, young people tend to think differently compared to previous generations.
"We must reach out to youths in institutions of higher learning, outside universities, and even those who have just completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, especially now that the voting age has been lowered," he said.
Meanwhile, Johari urged constituencies that lost in the 15th General Election not to give up but to intensify their efforts to win in the next general election.
"We must not give up on politics, as doing so will diminish our enthusiasm. In our political struggle, we need sincerity and a great deal of patience, and these qualities that will ultimately lead to success.
"Everyone must work as a team, regardless of who is contesting, to ensure victory for the constituency. I believe that such determination will help us reclaim seats lost by narrow margins, including the Kuantan parliamentary constituency, which was lost by a majority of 2,866 votes," he said.

Hamzah has key role in PN's GE16 strategy, says PAS veep

Hamzah Zainudin is the Bersatu deputy president, deputy chairman for PN, and opposition leader. PETALING JAYA : Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin can play a key role in formulating Perikatan Nasional's (PN) strategy for the 16th general election (GE16), says PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah. Speaking to FMT, Amar said Hamzah's position as Bersatu deputy president and PN deputy chairman was enough for him to be entrusted with the responsibility, alongside other leaders. He said strategic planning was not necessarily the job of the Bersatu president or PN chairman alone, as it was typically carried out as a team. 'Strategy is usually crafted as a team, not by any individual. So the issue of changing the (Bersatu) president doesn't arise,' he said. Nevertheless, Amar said PAS did not wish to interfere in Bersatu's alleged internal rifts over whether Muhyiddin Yassin should remain as party president and PN chairman or be replaced by Hamzah. Yesterday, FMT reported analyst Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as saying that PAS had yet to clearly commit to either side. Another analyst, Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia, said PAS appeared inclined to support Hamzah, although the party was being careful not to antagonise Muhyiddin and his allies. Fauzi also said that a smooth leadership transition was crucial for Bersatu and PN's stability ahead of GE16, and would help prevent the concentration of power in a single individual or faction. 'What happens in Bersatu, in our view, doesn't affect the ties in PN. Our cooperation is based on party-to-party relations. 'Whoever is chosen by the party, we will respect,' said Amar, who is also the Kelantan state assembly speaker. Meanwhile, PAS women's wing chief Nuridah Salleh expressed hope that the issue of Bersatu's leadership transition could be resolved. 'As part of a coalition that aspires to lead the country better, I hope and pray that all internal party issues can be resolved amicably and as soon as possible. 'Prolonged disputes will not benefit the party,' she said.

Bung rules out election talks with GRS

Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 Text Size: 'So I do not care about this GRS,' said Bung. KINABATANGAN: Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin reiterated his stance of not entering into any negotiations with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) ahead of the coming 17th state election. He said as far as Umno was concerned, many GRS leaders could not be trusted and had breached signed agreements. Advertisement Asked about GRS' direction for the polls, Bung said if the coalition has decided, it should just go ahead and say so without further twists and turns. 'It's not that difficult. I have said many times, I do not trust and have no confidence in GRS,' he said, adding that leaders who jump from one party to another are traitors who only think for themselves, and would eventually betray the people. 'So I do not care about this GRS,' said Bung. Over the weekend, there was a growing push from grassroots supporters in Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Sabah Star for the ruling coalition to go into the polls on its own. With the Sabah State Legislative Assembly due to be dissolved by Nov 11, political parties have been locked in discussions over possible electoral pacts. The situation remains fluid amid local political rivalries and a groundswell of support for Sabah to regain its autonomous rights through local parties. GRS is in a coalition with Sabah Pakatan Harapan in the State Government, while Barisan Nasional remains in the opposition in Sabah. Sabah Barisan and Sabah Pakatan are discussing an electoral pact, while Hajiji is keen to work with Sabah Pakatan, without Barisan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
