Mumbai's Suburban Rail Network gets a ₹52,724-crore boost
Advt By , ETInfra Mumbai's suburban railway network is set to get a boost, with the Railways Ministry sanctioning multiple projects totaling ₹52,724 crore under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) schemes. These initiatives aim to significantly improve connectivity and meet the ever-growing demands of the city's commuters, the official statement expansion under the project includes MUTP-II with a budget outlay of ₹8,087 crore, MUTP-III (₹10,947 crore), and MUTP-IIIA (₹33,690 crore).According to the ministry, key works under MUTP-III involve the Panvel-Karjat line, quadrupling of the Virar-Dahanu section, the Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Corridor, trespass control measures, and the procurement of new rolling stock These projects, alongside the 5th and 6th lines between Borivali-Virar and the 3rd and 4th lines between Kalyan-Badlapur, are being executed by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd ( MRVC Ltd ).MRVC Ltd, a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways (MoR) and the Government of Maharashtra (GoM), operates on a 50:50 cost-sharing multi-tracking efforts are also underway on existing busy corridors:Work has been sanctioned to expand to 4 lines between Churchgate to Mumbai Central, 8 lines between Mumbai Central to Borivali, and 6 lines between Borivali to 5th and 6th line between CSMT-Kurla has been sanctioned, with work already progressing on the Kurla-Parel section. Additionally, two extra lines exist on the CSMT-Kurla-Vasai-Panvel further bolster suburban rail capacity , a total of 238 new 12-car rakes have been sanctioned under MUTP-III & IIIA, representing an investment of ₹19,293 Ministry of Railways is actively supporting integration with metro authorities (MMRDA) to ensure seamless intermodal connectivity. Currently, Andheri East and Ghatkopar Railway stations are successfully integrated with their respective metro stations.

Kerala told to start land acquisition with its 50% project cost: Vaishnaw on Sabarimala rail project
Land acquisition for the long-pending Angamali-Sabarimala Railway line, also called Sabari Rail project, is likely to begin soon as recent discussions between Kerala government and Railways Ministry indicate a renewed push to implement the project. In a written reply to questions from Congress's Jebi Mather Hisham in RS Friday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that in a recent meeting with CM Pinarayi Vijayan, the state government has been requested to begin land acquisition by using its share of 50% of the project cost. Vaishnaw said that once land acquisition by the state starts, work can proceed further. The 111-km Angamali-Sabarimala railway line project via Erumeli was sanctioned in 1997-98. It is among the crucial railway projects in Kerala, which is expected to cater to the pilgrims visiting Sabrimala temple. Erumeli is the gateway to the famous hill temple. However, only the work on Angamali-Kaladi (7 km) line and long lead works on Kaladi-Perumbavoor (10 km) were taken up so far. Vaishnaw said that further works could not be taken up due to protests against land acquisition and fixing of alignment of the line, court cases against the project and inadequate support from the state government. The project's estimated cost has been revised to `3,801 crore by Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) and submitted to Kerala government in December, 2023. In August 2024, the Kerala government gave its conditional consent to the estimate. Later, the Railways Ministry asked the state government to give unconditional consent for sharing the cost. The ministry also asked the Kerala government to enter into a tripartite MoU among the state government, Ministry of Railways and RBI for the project. 'However, in a memorandum submitted by Kerala government to the Railway Minister on June 3, 2025, it has been intimated that the Kerala government does not agree to enter into tripartite agreement,' Vaishnaw said. An MoU was inked between the state and the Railways Ministry in January 2016 but work could not be started due to ambiguity over financing and sharing of total cost. NHSRCL begins DPR work for new Bullet train corridors beyond Mumbai-Ahmedabad
Bullet train in India: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has started preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for expanding India's bullet train network beyond Mumbai-Ahmedabad. NHSRCL is a joint venture (JV) between the Government of India and participating state governments, is tasked with implementing high-speed rail (HSR) projects across the country. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (July 23), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Ministry of Railways is actively working on plans to extend the HSR network beyond the MAHSR corridor. 'In order to expand the HSR network in India beyond MAHSR corridor and to meet the growing passenger demand between major cities of commercial/economic and tourist importance, Detailed Project Report (DPRs) are being prepared by National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL),' Vaishnaw said. The Union Minister further added that HSR projects are highly capital intensive and any decision for taking up new project is based on many factors such as technical feasibility, financial & economic viability, traffic demand and availability of funds and financing options, etc. The MAHSR project has been undertaken with technical collaboration and financial assistance from the Government of Japan. Earlier, the National Rail Plan mentions the following routes for future possible development for high speed rail network: The Ministry of Railways has targeted to complete entire MAHSR project by December 2029. 'The Gujarat portion of the corridor between Vapi and Sabarmati is planned to be completed by Dec, 2027. The entire project (Maharashtra to Sabarmati section) is expected to be completed by Dec, 2029,' the minister replied.
