Sabah Records Highest Agricultural Holdings In Malaysia
Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the agricultural holdings refer to the number of individuals or organisations engaged in the agricultural sector, with Sabah's interior zone — comprising the districts of Keningau, Sook, Nabawan, Tambunan and Tenom — accounting for 26 per cent of the state's total agricultural holdings.
'This number is expected to increase further given the vast potential of undeveloped agricultural land in the interior areas,' he said when launching the Road to National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 Series 2 here today.
In response to this development, he said the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, through its various agencies, has stepped up efforts to boost the agricultural sector in the interior areas.
'These efforts include the establishment of the Sook Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK); setting up a coffee processing facility in Sapulut, Nabawan; restoring padi fields in Tulid; and cultivating taro and onions in Sook. We are also working to introduce high market-potential crops such as MD2 pineapples,' he said.
Arthur said the federal government, together with the state government, remains committed to strengthening the agricultural sector through policy planning, technical support programmes and rural infrastructure investments to continuously enhance agri-food productivity.
'As the lead agency for agri-food marketing services in the country, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) plays a key role in strengthening the agri-food security chain by focusing on accessibility and affordability for consumers, supply availability, as well as usage stability and sustainability,' he said.
He said that last year, Sabah FAMA was allocated RM13.8 million for the implementation of 313 projects and programmes, benefiting over 29,000 entrepreneurs and contributing to sales worth RM83 million.
'With the upgrading of tamu (rural markets), strengthening of retail outlet networks, and strategic engagement with farmers and operators at the grassroots level, FAMA is confident that Sabah can become one of the key pillars in the national food security agenda,' he added.

Air India completes fuel switch checks on Boeing planes after crash report
Air India, in a official statement on Tuesday, announced that it has completed the fuel control switch inspection of its Boeing fleets. NEW DELHI: (Bernama) Air India said on Tuesday (July 22) it has completed fuel switch checks on all its Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft as ordered by India's aviation regulator. An initial report this month on the June 12 crash of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner found that fuel to both engines was abruptly cut off seconds before the plane went down after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport in Gujarat state. "Air India has completed precautionary inspections on the locking mechanism of Fuel Control Switch (FCS) on all Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft in its fleet. Boeing 737 aircraft are part of the fleet of Air India Express, Air India's low cost subsidiary. "With this, the two airlines have complied with the directives of the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) issued on July 14, 2025," the airline said in a statement. "In the inspections, no issues were found with the said locking mechanism," it said. The London-bound flight AI171 carrying 242 people crashed into a medical college building. All aboard except one passenger died in the disaster, with the total death toll, including victims on the ground, being 260. The aircraft began to lose altitude before crossing the airport perimeter wall, the preliminary report found. "In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff. The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report released by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said. The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with US officials' early assessment of data, reported on July 16 that a black-box recording of dialogue between the flight's two pilots indicated it was the captain who moved the switches from "run" to "cutoff" setting. Reuters, a day later, carried a similar report, suggesting it was the captain who cut the flow of fuel. JAKIM Probes Appointment Of Hospital Catering Company Without Halal Certification
NILAI, July 22 (Bernama) -- The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is currently gathering detailed information following the appointment of a catering company without halal certification to supply meals to patients at a hospital. Its director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said JAKIM aimed to find the best approach and would collaborate with the relevant parties to ensure the matter could be addressed collectively in a harmonious manner. 'There may be confusion or misunderstanding, which is why we are gathering further information and investigating. We are not looking to blame any party. 'JAKIM only became aware of this issue after it was mentioned in the Auditor-General's Report (LKAN),' he told reporters after launching the 2025 Halal and Fatwa Seminar (Sehalwa) organised by the Institute of Fatwa and Halal, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), here today. Sirajuddin said JAKIM would also explore the most suitable solution to address the appointment of companies without halal certification to operate catering services, including at government premises. Sirajuddin explained that halal certification inspections at such premises fall under the jurisdiction of the appointing agency, and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) has stipulated that all food suppliers must have halal certification. He added that JAKIM is ready to assist food suppliers in obtaining halal certification, and reiterated that all agencies must ensure the companies possess halal certificates before being appointed. Meanwhile, Sirajuddin said JAKIM received 19,686 applications for the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) last year, comprising 5,650 from Bumiputera companies and 13,206 from non-Bumiputera companies, with the remainder from foreign-owned companies. 'Some Bumiputera companies may assume that being Malay and Muslim means they don't need halal certification, but this mindset must change. JAKIM has never closed its doors, and we will continue encouraging Bumiputera players to apply for SPHM,' he said.
