
Households on Universal Credit can claim £300 cash this summer holiday – will you get a boost?
Hard-up families can claim support through the government's Household Support Fund.

The scheme has been extended multiple times, with the latest round running between April 2025 and March 2026.
Each council has a share of £742million which it can dole out to residents in need.
Eligibility criteria varies but help is usually offered to those on low income or claiming benefits.
Households in Doncaster can apply for cost of living cash worth up to £300 to help with a supermarket shop.
You must have dependent children to qualify for the support.
A dependant child is a child for whom you receive Child Benefit.
For example, if you have one dependent child you will receive £100.
This rises to £200 if you are a household with two dependent children.
If you have three or more kids the amount you receive is £300.
To be eligible for the support you must be claiming Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, means tested free school meals or council tax reductions.

If you previously applied for the support, a payment will be made to the bank account using information you previously provided.
If you have not submitted an application before you can do so online by visiting, www.doncaster.gov.uk/services/council-tax-benefits/household-support-fund.
Elsewhere, residents of North Northamptonshire can apply for supermarket vouchers worth up to £320 on August 4.
A person who lives alone will be given a voucher worth £150.
Meanwhile, a house with two residents could receive £260 for their food shop.
If you live in a home with three residents or more you will receive a voucher worth £320.
Does every council offer support?
The £742million Household Support Fund has been shared between all councils in England.
So, if you don't live in this area but are struggling financially or are on benefits you will likely be eligible for help.
This is because the fund was originally set up to help those on low incomes or classed as vulnerable.
What type of help you can get will vary but it could range from a free cash payment to supermarket vouchers.
For example, residents in Worcestershire can apply for support worth up to £500 to help with water and energy costs.
Devon County Council has also issued supermarket vouchers worth more than £90 to 22,000 families with children on free school meals.
The £90 is equivalent to £15 per week for the six week school holiday.
Households in Redcar & Cleveland can also now apply for support worth up to £230.

If you're battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline.
The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living.
Every council in England has been given a share of £421million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households.
Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments.
In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families.
Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying.
Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income.
The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer.
And don't delay, the scheme has been extended until April 2025 but your council may dish out their share of the Household Support Fund before this date.
Once the cash is gone, you may find they cannot provide any extra help so it's crucial you apply as soon as possible.

Will the City ever learn to love working from home?
A workplace counter-revolution is underway, and HSBC is the latest to join it – by issuing a back-to-the-office order to its senior staff. The London-listed bank, which reported a 29 per cent slump in second-quarter profits, is turning away from hybrid working and wants those bearing the august title of managing director and up to 'set an example'. You can bet their underlings will heed that. It's inevitable at a big financial institution staffed by ambitious people who are naturally attuned to 'how things are done around here'. The City is the kind of place you get with the programme or get out. So how long before four days in the office turns into five? Not long, I suspect. That's assuming HSBC can find enough desks for everyone: there have been reports of shortages as it prepares to move from its Canary Wharf tower to a new home in the City of London, near St Paul's Cathedral. Some of the big US bulge-bracket investment banks with famously unforgiving cultures – JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and the like – went back to a full five days a week some time ago. The CIPD, a professional body for people working in HR, recently issued a report looking at practices a year on from the implementation of the Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Act 2023. It found that, while 91 per cent of employers offered some form of flexible working, the number offering hybrid working, with part of the week in the office and part working from home, had fallen to 74 per cent from 84 per cent in 2023. Some 14 per cent of employers offering hybrid working were also planning to either introduce or increase the number of mandatory days in the office over the next 12 months, à la HSBC. This is despite 41 per cent of employers believing that an increase in home and hybrid working has led to increased productivity and efficiency in their organisations, versus 16 per cent taking the opposite view. The more radical – and controversial – four-day working week recently received a thumbs up from 100 per cent of the employers participating in a national trial organised by the 4 Day Week Foundation. All 17 participating companies planned to stick with it, reporting enhanced productivity from happier workers. But I wouldn't expect to see too many joining them. It's interesting to note that Radioactive PR, an early adopter that I featured in a column looking at the practice five years ago, moved to four and a half days post pandemic, partly to help the company come through the wrenching impact of Covid. 'It makes business sense, and that's all I can make decisions based on, just like when I made the decision to go four-day in the first place, saying at the time that it was for as long as it worked for us,' CEO Rich Leigh said in a blogpost. The company has since been taken over by the Stakked agency collective and merged with Munch PR, and the new owner tells me: 'When we acquired the business, the Radioactive agency was on a five-day working week, and continues to be so at Munch.' The likes of Goldman Sachs have never struggled for talent, despite the negative attention that the brutal work culture faced by juniors in the City and on Wall Street has sometimes fostered. In 2021, a slide deck was leaked that reported an average 95-hour work week among 13 junior Goldman analysts. In 2013, City banks faced calls to overhaul working practices following the death of a 21-year-old intern at Bank of America after an all-nighter. Those banks have not noticeably struggled for staff since then. As for the compilers of the Goldman slide deck? They weren't exactly asking for full adoption of hybrid working, duvet days and cuddles from the CEO. They wanted a cap of – wait for it – 80 hours. Sign up to work for one of these institutions, and you know what you're getting into. High pay, but at a steep cost. However, could banks without the allure of the Goldman name benefit by sticking with the more flexible working practices to attract bright individuals, quite willing to work hard, but put off by the culture of some institutions? It is notable that Standard Chartered, one of HSBC's smaller Asia-focused rivals, is still offering hybrid working despite its tough-as-nails CEO, Bill Winters. Lloyds Banking Group, meanwhile, mandates only two days a week in the office, and I understand there are no plans to change that. The CIPD survey would suggest they are being rewarded. Some 80 per cent of the employees surveyed said hybrid working had had a positive impact on their quality of life, while a third thought working flexibly had had a positive impact on their career. Only a small proportion of workers – three per cent – said they had left a job since January 2024 due to a lack of flexible working. But apply that number to the British workforce as a whole and you get 1.1 million people. A final point: the decline in hybrid and flexible working inevitably makes life much harder for disabled workers. For the record, I am one of them. The government claims that it wants to help them into work, but that's only getting harder, and I'm not seeing much sign of it finding ways to address the daunting fences they have to clear just to get an interview. Kingswood butcher blames new parking charges for closure
The owners of a butchers say it is going to close one of its shops as parking charges recently introduced in the area have turned it into a "ghost town" meaning the business is no longer Mobile Butchers has a shop inside Kingswood Indoor Market in east Bristol, but says Saturday 2 August will be its last day of a post on social media the company says parking charges have seen its takings "cut in half".South Gloucestershire Council, which introduced the charges, said they are needed to "meet the budgetary challenges" it faces. In a post on its Facebook page Mark's Mobile Butchers says it is closing its Kingswood shop "with great sadness"."Since the council introduced parking charges, Kingswood has become like a ghost town," the post reads."Unfortunately, this has had a serious impact on our business - our takings have been cut in half over the past few weeks - making it unsustainable to continue trading there."The business is not disappearing completely though, with the post adding the butchers will still be available at The Concorde Pub in Stockwood on Wednesdays and at Yate Shopping Centre on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. South Gloucestershire Council introduced charges for its car parks on 19 May, with them in force from 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday. Drivers now pay 70p for the first hour in short-stay car parks, rising to £5 for up to four fee for parking in long-stay car-parks ranges from £3 for the first four hours, up to £5 for six move has been unpopular with some businesses from the beginning, with many on Kingswood's High Street writing an open letter to the council in May, asking for a rethink. Coventry City owner explores building new 40,000-seater stadium
The owner of Coventry City has been exploring the possibility of building a new 40,000-seater stadium for the club, the BBC has King, owner and executive chairman of the football club, has written directly to Julie Nugent, the chief executive of Coventry City Council, to ask about constructing a new stadium at the Butts Park Arena, current home of Coventry Rugby the plans have been described as "unfeasible" by Jon Sharp, the chairman of the rugby club, due to the size and position of the site, just outside the city a groundshare at Butts Park appears to be off the table, discussions around an alternative home for the Sky Blues once again raises questions about the club's long-term future at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The stadium is owned by the Frasers Group, where former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is the majority club's agreement to play there is due to expire at the end of the 2027-28 new English Football League (EFL) rules introduced for this season, Championship clubs will be fined £10,000 if they do not have at least a 10-year stadium agreement by 19 fine would double for each consecutive season without a deal and the EFL would ultimately be able to expel the club from the league if they did not have an agreement covering a whole season. Asked about the possibility of Coventry City developing a 40,000-seater stadium on the rugby club's land, Mr Sharp told the BBC: "Yes, it has been suggested."The problem Doug King has is that he owns the football club but he doesn't own the stadium. He is having discussions with Mike Ashley and I think he wants to have an alternative up his sleeve."He did mention it to me and I said it wasn't going to be feasible. That really is it as far as I'm concerned. We did not know he had spoken to the council."We support the Sky Blues, they are our fellow Coventry club. But we don't think it's feasible unfortunately and it's not in our gift anyway, it would be in the gift of the council." Any move away from the Coventry Building Society would also need the approval of the government's new Independent Football Regulator following recently introduced legislation, which would also require fans to be consulted over any council was consulted for informal advice as the relevant planning authority for the local authority is understood to have responded negatively to the approach about Butts Park Arena, which was made in June. One senior councillor, who did not want to be named, told the BBC: "This is not a discussion the city needs to have again."The idea of the football club moving to the Butts Park Arena had been pushed by Coventry City's previous owners Sisu back in 2016. It was part of the long-running stadium dispute which saw the club fall out with the two previous owners of the stadium, Arena Coventry Ltd (a joint venture between a charity and the local council) and Wasps. Both disputes ultimately led to the club leaving the stadium to play home matches, first in Northampton in 2013-14 and then Birmingham in 2019-21. Responding to the BBC's request for comment, a spokesman for the council said: "Organisations regularly approach us for confidential planning advice, though this doesn't mean they'll submit an application."With regards to Coventry City Football Club, the council, like every Sky Blues fan, wants to see the club secure its long-term future in the city."Doug King told the BBC he did not want to comment on the latest development. In April, he told BBC CWR it would be "madness" for the football club to leave the Coventry Building Society Arena at the time, he said he hoped that one day the club and ground will be under single said: "It was built for the football club, it should never have been moved away". The stadium was acquired by the Frasers group in November 2022 after former owners, rugby club Wasps, went into King launched a late court bid to try and thwart Mike Ashley's attempt to buy the stadium shortly after confirming he was taking over Coventry City - also in November 2022 - but was ultimately have been approached for comment about whether a long-term deal for the club at the Coventry Building Society Arena is possible.
